Zack wasn't really at a loss for what to do; he usually had some plans. Some friend to hang out with, maybe a party, or maybe just a nice night at home. Or some overtime at the bar. But he wasn't one to get bored—perhaps because he was always taking an effort to avoid being bored.
Tonight, he had considered powering up, but decided it might be a better idea to straighten up his apartment—in case he was planning any guests.
And then he'd found her number.
Scrawled on a piece of paper, he recognized the handwriting from the night she'd given it to him.
Now, there wasn't anything particularly strange about him having a girl's number; he had plenty of them. But this one…this one had seemed like more than she was letting on.
This one might actually be worth calling.
He toyed with the idea for only a moment, and took only the slightest bit of effort to ensure she wouldn't be able to track his number back to him—just in case she was someone he needed to be careful around.

Honestly, she had been expecting the phone to ring. She had expected a call, and quick as lightening she picked it up, drawing in a breath before opening the phone. It was Jett. There was no way it wasn’t. That was why she had her phone on still. That was why it was plugged into her car, charging merrily. That was why it had started playing it’s catchy little tune and had lit up. Because Jett was calling. That was the only explanation for anything.
He was calling to ask her to come back and take him with her. They were going to go to California together and have babies and be happy and eat things and make love on the beach in the dead of night, and…
And it was just Jett calling to tell her all of that.
Well. She wasn’t going to sound too eager to talk to him. Not at all…even though…she was. She really was.
“Yes? What’s up?” Her voice was schooled into a nice, short curt thing. She wasn’t going to let him off the hook this quickly. No sir.

"Oh," Zack purred. "You sound so professional over the phone. Not much of a talker, or are you just busy with something else?"
He didn't know if it was enough that she would recognize his voice, or think he was just some stranger with a wrong number, so he added, "You up for another cocktail sometime or are you keeping busy?"
He was making himself comfortable at home and flopped into a chair; he wasn't sure if this was going to be a phone call or a quick call to schedule some meet up. Of course, he could go either way; she had a voice that sounded even lovelier over the phone, and if she wasn't going to come out and play, he could stay in and play. And maybe heat up a frozen pizza or something, since it was his mistake for not bugging the cook at the bar to make him something to go. Or maybe he could convince her that in return for some company, he'd treat her to a nice dinner.
Of probably frozen pizza, since that was about as much effort as he was willing to put into it, probably.

Raven frowned at the voice on the other end of the line. That wasn’t Jett. That wasn’t anyone she thought she knew…what the ********? She almost turned the phone off at the first line, though paused and at least let him finish.
Another cocktail? Who was this guy? And…more importantly…why wasn’t he just Jett calling to see where she was? To beg her to take him with her…
She gave an audible sigh and shook her head, feeling the tears threatening to fall. “I’m sorry, but who is this? I suppose I was expecting another person to call me, not some stranger asking to get me drunk.” Not that the voice on the phone had even said that…but it had sort of been implied. Or at least that’s what she took from it…
And honestly, getting plastered sounded like a really fantastic idea right now.

Zack's lips pursed as he considered her words. Or, more importantly, her tone.
"…If now's a bad time, I understand. I suppose it's after New Years now though, isn't it? "
…She had an ultimatum, right? With her fiancé? ********, she might not have even been in town.
Oh, hell, this was going to turn into a wasted call, wasn't it?
He shifted positions a bit and then just slumped back in the chair. "If you're having cocktails with so many guys that you can't remember, either you're doing something very right, or very wrong. I broke us into that bar, whipped you up a drink? Had a good make out session and you gave me your number—that ring a bell? If not, I'd be happy to show you round two. Unless you're across the country by now, in which case…I suppose we're both a little s**t out of luck, huh?"

She sighed. “It is a pretty rotten time…I’m in the car driving now, actually…I’m just outside of the city though…” Sanidine. This had to be him. The attractive Nega with the intoxicating kisses and the wonderful cocktails. Well…at least it wasn’t someone completely awful. And she had been at this road rest for an awful long time…she really had wanted him to find out she was gone and call her so she could turn around…and…
And honestly, she wanted to turn around. But…well. That plan fell through. “I’m literally at the first road rest outside the city. My fiancé and I had a bit of a falling out and I left in a pretty big hurry…I thought you were him calling…but. Well. I know how I rank on his importance scale…”
There she went again. Dumping everything on this guy. This attractive…Negaverse guy who…who was part of the damn reason that Jett wouldn’t leave in the first place! Ugh. Disgusting fate and our disgusting…things you did.
Raven sighed. “I really don’t know what I’m going to do right now. I just. I just want to know if I’m going or staying…”

Zack pursed his lips for a moment; he wasn't the sort of person who was really driven to console someone, but hell, he didn't have anything better to do tonight. Or, at least, tonight could only get better if she decided it wasn't worth it to keep driving.
"Seems like you already made up your mind, if you're in the car driving. But it's pretty late. I imagine you've had a pretty trying day already. I think it's a bad idea to try and drive to California with all those emotions. You're going to wind up needing a hotel in a few hours anyway. Why don't you pull over, take a breather, and then meet me somewhere? Talking in person's probably better than trying to drive and hold the phone and hold all your emotions in, isn't it?"
He didn't really wait for an answer before he continued, "And once you get to California, it's just you. You'll have to make all new friends, and right now wouldn't it just be easier to buckle down with one, unload, and then figure out your life when you're not so worked up? You know, I've got a spare bed, here. And I've got two ears and as many drinks as you want. I can meet you at—how about Ihop, there's one a few exits away from you, and I can be there in fifteen minutes."
It was an offer, but Zack had already made it a plan; he was already standing up to go put his shoes on and meet her there, and he was going to say whatever he needed to get her to agree.
Tonight wasn't going to be boring, one way or the other.
And he was getting pancakes.

Well. Well s**t. Honestly, she didn’t want to admit it, but it all sounded…terribly tempting. Finally though, Raven just let out a long sigh. “You’re not going to spend the night powered up as Sanidine, are you? Because…that’s pretty stupid powering up in your own home…”
Wow. There was a rational part of her that didn’t surface often…though maybe…maybe he understood her message, that she was a dark mirror senshi. And they were allies and…
Damn he would look funny going into Ihop dressed in that awful uniform. The thought made Raven give a slightly hollow laugh and finally a sigh. “…All right. I’ll be there soon, then. Thank you.”
She turned the car back on and rubbed at her tired, swollen eyes. “…By the way. My name’s Raven. It’s uh. Nice to meet you, I suppose. I was going to keep being all cryptic and never telling you my name…stranger danger, you know. But I guess I’ve warmed up to you, at least a little.”
That and she wanted booze. Maybe lots of it.
Maybe? Oh please. Give her all the booze right now. Yum yum. Booze and pancakes. Oh. Oh or boozy pancakes. She liked the sound of that.

The male seemed to acknowledge that it was safe for them to share identities, even if it wasn't a practice he really had a lot of experience in. Truth be told, he liked his privacy, but he was already involved in this.
If things went south...he'd figure something out. Everyone thought she was going to California anyway, so if something happened...
"Zack," he introduced. "And if it makes you feel any better, you're still Miss Mystery to me, and I've warmed up to you a lot. I'm not going to wear anything fancy," he added, perhaps just in his own way of making sure she knew he wasn't stupid enough to power up for Ihop. "So if you just happen to see some handsome, studly man sitting there all by myself, it's probably me. But I'll recognize you, so it shouldn't be too hard. You just drive safe. Or not, go ahead and speed. For the pancakes. Either way, I'll see you soon."
