She was not a very good cook, but she tried. This was important, because Maebe never tried. She never put her whole effort into anything she did. She did not work hard, and she did not excel. She figured out the exact minimum needed to get by, and achieved that. But here, cooking pork chops that came out too crispy from overcooking, and rice that stuck to the bottom of the pan, it was clear she had actually tried. Because Cami needed to know that she was worth something.

She plopped the pork chop down on the fried rice, and dropped a sprig of - what was this, she didn't even know, it was green and it looked nice - on top.

Then she whistled to let Cami know dinner was ready, because she was a classy b***h.

Rosemary. It was rosemary and Cami knew because she could smell it as soon as she sat down to dinner. She hadn't been far, really. Watching Maebe cook was like a rainbow or perhaps a summer storm back home. Brief and either magical or tempestuous, depending on how the food turned out. Overly crispy pork chops and a bit of burnt rice was rainbow material. Even if the rosemary got pushed off to the side and utterly ignored as the garnish it was.

Nobody was supposed to eat those anyway.

For several reasons she ate her prepared dinner without complaint despite its flaws. One, Maebe had cooked it and Maebe never cooked. Two, it was actually a decent meal, all things considered. Not like anything Kostya might prepare, or Cami in her deepest cooking groove, but it wasn't a hardship to eat it. Three? She'd lost weight. Quite a bit of weight, in fact. Otto had brushed fingers against her ribs the other day and though he hadn't said anything, his eyes had. Volumes.

Reaching across the table halfway through dinner she did something that was romantic enough to almost put her off her own food -- a rare occurrence. Lightly her lips brushed over Maebe's knuckles in gratitude. "Thank you so much for dinner. I know you don't really enjoy cooking."

Maebe sat beside her, with a full plate of food in front of her as well, untouched as she watched Cami eat. She watched every hair on the woman's head move and rustle with each subtle movement. She wasn't looking for gratitude or enjoyment, she was studying Cami like a dissection, taking each part and watching it separately.

Lips grazed against her hand, knocking her out of her trance, and she blinked to refocus on her girlfriends face. A smile bloomed against her own features, and she scooted closer, pressing her head against Cami's shoulder.

"I don't. But you're worth it. I'll try to learn. I'll get better. I promise."

She kept the desperation out of her voice expertly, despite how desperate she truly was. She was sure she'd lost Otto's heart, which meant she'd lost part of herself in the process. She couldn't lost Cami, too.

Maebe might have kept the desperation out of her voice but for her to be pressed so close, for her to be making such wild promises without that sly look in her eyes, gave part of her feelings away. Sliding an arm around her girlfriend Cami turned to kiss her briefly. "Don't push yourself too hard. If you become a better cook than I am then there won't be anything for me to do!" She didn't know what was wrong but something was. She wanted to push, wanted to ask, but wasn't sure she wanted to know.

Unfortunately for the security of her happy threesome she would have been better off pushing, better off asking. Instead fingers skimmed through blonde hair as she nudged Maebe towards her own food. "First step, though, is eating what you cook. Cooking's all about flavors and making what you like, understanding how they work together. You have to eat for that to happen." Cami herself? Wasn't eating all that much anymore.

That didn't mean her sweethearts were allowed to neglect their health and well-being!

Maebe made a face, pinched and unhappy, when Cami tried to teach her how to make good food. "Well you don't have to worry about that. I don't want to do this all the time. It's only special if I keep it rare like a unicorn." She wasn't listening to her girlfriends tips on how to cook, or trying to figure out if her efforts really had been worth it. She'd done exactly what she'd planned to do, and she'd tried her best at it. Tomorrow, she would expect proper food made by someone who knew how to cook sitting in front of her as usual.

She looked at her food, and considered eating it. Then, without meaning to, she realized the thought of eating food made her sick. Everything seemed to boil restlessly in her stomach, whispering dementedly about how she would get fat and Otto would never want to touch her. That was madness, of course, and she knew it. The only reason Otto did not want to touch Maebe is because he'd remembered her black, black heart.

So she tried to pull away pieces of meat from the pork chop, and put them in her mouth with her fingers. She chewed, and chewed, and never quite swallowed. Chewing kept her occupied enough.

"How was your day?"
