“Oh come on now.” Cooed Malta to the sturdy mountain Sheron. It stood, stock still – literally – at the edge of her sire's paddock, staring at her with vacant eyes in it's grandly-horned head as it chewed its cud. “You're going to a better place, where there won't be any scary khehora to bother you.” the sheron grunted. It had been bred to be fearless, and the khehora that teemed in the settlement around it meant nothing to the tough, dumb beast. “And it's not even to the slaughter like it usually is. You're going to live a happy, long, time with people who actually know how to work your udders without clawing you!” she said, giggling, “Won't that be nice?”

Her clutchmate, Baayo, lounging on the side of the tranquil field, rolled his head towards her and half-opened a gleaming eye. “Can you shut up for one moment?” he growled, “Talking to the thing won't do anybody any good. It's stupid. Dumb as a rock.” he shifted, clearly with great effort.

“It's as smart as it needs to be.” Malta admonished her lazy brother, giving the Sheron a nudge. It was a stubborn beast, and clearly didn't want to move if it didn't have to. Much like Baayo, actually. Malta thought, with a guilty bit of annoyance at her brother.

“It's dumber than you.” drolled the khehora. Once, the insult would have upset Malta, but she was armed with a new defense. She had been called 'brilliant', by someone she respected, and nobody would be able to put her down ever again. Not about her smarts or her weight. She ignored Baayo and went around the back of the beast and pushed. Eventually, it began to move, though ponderously. She picked up it's leash, dropped in the process of getting it to move, and tugged. It's stride quickened, and they were soon away. “You'll see!” she said to the beast through the rope and her teeth, “You'll be very happy!”

Baayo snorted and stretched out in the sun. If his sister wanted to take one of their animals to some magescian family, he didn't care either way.

    (taming - Success)

The sheron cow had been bred to withstand harsh weather and to tolerate the large, sharp-fanged predators that tended it. It was fearless and hardy, shaggy of fur and strong of horn. But, as Malta led it closer to where Detraeus and his family lived, it balked. Khehora were familiar, but magescians were to be feared.

It resisted her attempts to pull it, and Malta hurriedly cooed to it soothingly. “They're good people!” she chirped, reassuringly, they'll take care of you.” it stared, uneasily huffing, into the craggy distance, “Trust me! They are! And they need your milk so they'll take care of you for a long time.” She gave it another hug with her mouth. “Please?”

The beast considered her offer, and then relented, allowing itself – somewhat trustingly – to be pulled towards her friend's home and the meeting place they had arranged. She'd been surprised and pleased when she had run into her friend Detraeus on an herb-gathering expedition in the mountains, and he had been surprised to find her, as well. It was a long way from Soldul, and a long time since their last meeting. Still, she was surprised to hear that he had a family – it had felt like only the previous day that he had told her about the woman he loved, and her 'betrayal.' Malta had gathered that it was the same woman, and was glad that things had turned out so well! And children!

They'd met up and talked a few times, and she'd given him medicines when she could, as well as seeds for food and herbs. She was happy to help, and had even offered to bring him a milking sheron, because even khehora liked milk and she had to assume that Magescians liked it more. They had arranged to meet so she could transfer the Sheron over, and she hoped that she could arrange to meet his children. She was just bold enough to ask, just barely, and she looked forward to meeting his little ones. She loved little ones. She wanted little ones of her own, but not yet. She needed to perfect her craft first, because then she could better deal with her suitors, which were starting to overwhelm her a little.

First, though; Detraeus. She hastened towards the meeting place, the somewhat reluctant cow following behind...

    (Training - Failure)

While she waited at the pleasant little riverbank that was perfect for meeting purposes – since Detraeus's mate was not comfortable with a full-grown khehora near the house – she fussed over the sheron, attempting to get it into tip-top shape for her friend. “Now. You're a milking sheron and they aren't likely to let you out and wandering so much. They'll want you in one place, to make it easier.” she said to it, “So you're going to have to learn to stand still. Lets try that now.” she sat down and watched the Sheron, “Go on, stand still.”

The beast proceeded to move to another patch of grass, it's munching hunger more than it's desire to obey. Much more.

“Oh come on!” she murred, frustratedly, “It's easy. You just have to stand.” she stood, herself, “Like this.”

The Sheron ignored her and Malta frowned. “You're going to be a handful, aren't you?” the Sheron flicked it's tail against the small flies that favored the riverbed, “Oh dear. What am I giving you, Detraeus...” She looked anxiously up the path, “Well,” she said, shifting uneasily, “Maybe if you don't kick or tip a candle over or do something bad...” she blanched at all the possibilities, “Maybe he won't hate you.” she frowned at the Sheron, second-guessing herself with each moment that passed waiting. Maybe this was a terrible idea. Maybe she shouldn't have offered. But she did, and she had, and here she was. “Oh, I do hope you're a good gift.” she murmured, her headfins perking up as she heard the sound of approaching footsteps. “I do hope you are.”

But there was no time to improve the sheron. Detraeus was coming and the meeting was almost upon her. With mixed delight and anxiety, she picked up the Sheron's leash and dragged it back from it's grazing.

Languidly, it chewed its meal as it awaited its fate.
