Thomas hadn't actually spent a lot of time on the training field as of yet, and currently, he was beginning to think that he really should have been. The gauntlets that he wore on both hands with their bladed knuckles were not so bad, but the small crossbows that were mounted on each, so far, had been both awkward and tedious to work with.

Throwing knives, he could do. Shooting arrows that looked more like bolts of energy that either disappeared as they sailed through the air or after they hit their target from a contraption stuck to the top of his wrists? Not so easy as it looked. However, the one part he was worried about, the reloading, seemed simple enough, with a little bit of practice.

What wasn't so easy was actually hitting his intended target, one training dummy strapped to a pole about fifty yards away from where he stood. What made it more difficult is that his irate b***h of a weapon kept yammering in his head about how he was doing it wrong, and how disappointing this was, and so on.

And on.

And on.

After one such shot curved in the air only too miss it's target by at least a foot, Thomas cursed several times in his native language. Why was this so difficult? He was Thomas Giacinto! He could master anything. And he would master this.

All he could do is reload, and shoot again, and again, until he got it right.

Chance had been spending a great deal of time on the training field, mostly because he didn't particularly want any repeats of his time in the infirmary after that one incident in the Haunted House. Granted, it had been a while since then, but to put it mildly - and amusingly - he wasn't about to take any chances of being caught off guard again.

Most of the time, he went by himself. Occasionally he'd drag Claude out as well, with the promise of a drink or snacks afterwards. Sometimes Chance could be found on the field in the middle of the night, when he couldn't sleep (as usual), absently threading arrows into the wire string of his bow and firing them towards the nearest target.

This time, however, it was during the day, and Chance ambled onto the field, whistling casually. He was wearing a pair of black leggings, a plain white teeshirt, and a starry blue sweater with gold stars imprinted across it, as well as a pair of well-worn Converse All-Stars. His whistle turned to a mild mannered hum, which turned into a slow ebbing out of breath as he realized that there was someone else already on the field, in front of the practice dummy that Chance usually worked on.

"Hey," he said mildly, making his way towards him. "How's it hanging?"

It wasn't until he heard a voice that he stopped, not noticing the approaching footsteps as he was so thoroughly concentrated on the dummy in front of himself and being able to put an electric blue arrow bolt through it. He turned towards the voice, a pierced eyebrow cocking as he took in the sight of him.

It wasn't anybody he recalled seeing around before, but that was no excuse to be rude, so Thomas offered him a smile before speaking, his voice lilted with a slight Italian accent. "Ah, hello." He nodded, taking this opportunity to let his breathing slow, his brow shiny with sweat that he did not want to wipe on his sleeve but nor did he feel he should wipe it away with a gauntlet, lest he end up stabbing himself in the face by accident. "It is not going so badly, but not going so well either. This weapon...it is difficult to grow used to."

When the other man approached near enough, Tommy pulled off one of his gloves and held out his hand. "Thomas Giacinto. Are you needing help with something?"

The accent was noted and appreciated; Chance always did enjoy people that spoke with different cadences and tones, and accents were one of those things that he found rather interesting to listen to.

"Yeah, I know how that is," he said with a small laugh, sliding one hand into the pocket of his sweater and rocking back on his heels. "I'm still getting used to the one I have, and it's only one bow and arrow. Yours is pretty cool, though," he added, glancing at the gauntlets.

The offered hand was taken with a smile, Chance wrapping his fingers around the man's and giving it a firm but simple shake.

"Nah," he answered, once he'd let go, and waved a hand in a noncommittal sort of way. "I was just coming down to do a bit of training, and I saw you here, so I figured I'd come introduce myself. I'm Chance, by the way," he added. "Chance Bones."

A bow and arrow? Thomas almost longed for such simplicity, though he supposed his really wasn't that bad, especially since he seemed to be overcoming the sheer awkwardness after hours of practice. "Ah yes, they are...interesting." he nodded down towards one of his gauntlets, fingers curling into a fist. "They are not like any thing I have seen before." He admitted. "I almost wondered if all weapons were such oddities."

Somewhere in his head, Jaina was making rather indignant noises, not appreciating being called an oddity in the slightest.

Once the handshake was given, Tommy used his free hand to run back through his hair, which had gone rather flat from physical exertion induced sweat.

Purple ombre hair re-spiked, he slid his hand back into his gauntlet, listening as the other man spoke of training. "Well it is good to have met you, Chance Bones. Quite an interesting name. Chance Bones." When he spoke it again, he gave it a more dramatic flair, deepening his voice, adding a bit of hand gesture for effect before he grinned.

"I would be happy to be of help with training, if you would are looking for a partner? This is all still very new to me, and I am not sure I quite understand how this Fear shield," He gestured up and down to himself, "Works. In truth you would be helping me more than I would be helping you." He gave a light chuckle, and offered Chance an expectant look as he waited to see if he would take the offer.

The other had arrows too, it seemed; but the gauntlets looked almost a little too awkward for Chance to wield himself, and he was actually relatively grateful for the fact that Asher was just a single longbow to work with.

{ you're welcome } thrummed the demon pleasantly.

Still, the guy seemed pleasant enough, and Chance gave him a casual smile. He summoned his own weapon and stuck the end of it into the ground, using it almost like a walking stick to lean against, Chance wrapping his fingers around the cold metal of the bow.

A laugh passed through his lips. "Thanks; I've heard it's a good one to make a lot of puns with," he added, winking in Thomas' direction. "So feel free to use that knowledge to your heart's content."

He let out a little hum of thought. "Sure, I'm always looking for a good spar," Chance answered lightly. "Things here take a bit o getting used to, but I'd be glad to do what I can to make it easier for you. I've only been here a few months myself, if you don't mind working with a kind of newbie but not really."

Thomas let out a bark of laughter. "Noted." He grinned, while also taking in the weapon that Chance had summoned. He couldn't help but admire it for it's simple, yet somehow still intricate, beauty. Of course, as soon as the thought surfaced, he could feel Jaida pouting somewhere in his head. It seemed that, no matter what, she would not be happy, though he often tried his best to lighten her mood.

"I hear that a few months can practically be considered a lifetime, here. You know, with the mortality rate." He continued to smile, even while considering how he had sealed his own short lived fate by signing up for this place.

Suddenly, his hands swept wide. "So, how should we begin?" He asked, taking a couple of steps back. "You shoot first, then I shoot? We both shoot at the same time....?"

"A few months here, a year there," said Chance, waving a hand. "It all depends on how you look at things, really. If you're seeing a few months here a success, then it's a success. But if you're seeing a few months here as just barely scraping by, or something like that, then you're only gonna do what you can to survive."

He gave a roll of his shoulders that was also a shrug. "I like to think that I chose to come here for a reason, so I'm just gonna do what I can with what I've got, 'cause that's how things go, right?"

Chance smiled at Thomas and ran a hand through his hair before gesturing to the other man.

"Feel free to start us off with a shot," he said lightly. "I'll take a few steps back, and we can just start firing away. But you can have the first shot, and then we'll just sort of fall into that whole back-and-forth routine that's easy to maintain in these spars."

"I think I would very much like to be one of those who does everything they can to survive." He grinned. "So I guess I had better figure out how to use this weapon, quickly, yes?" He seemed rather jovial, despite Chance's own personality seeming rather blasé. He was definitely hard to read and decipher, but Thomas was not going to dwell on it too much, because here he had a willing candidate, and a rather nice looking one, in which to train with.

"Okay, then!" He agreed, taking a few steps back himself. Though his weapon could have been used in close combat instead, if necessary, it was the actual shooting part that he wanted to get the hang of. Setting the strings back on both crossbows, he raised his right hand up in the air, and touched the trigger located somewhere in the palm of his glove with his middle finger, letting an electric blue bolt fly.

And veer off to hit absolutely nothing.

"Ah yes, an incredible miss in order to lull you into a false sense of security!" He called out with a grin, though he was feeling rather embarrassed by his failure.

Chance smiled. "Faster is better, after all," he said cheerfully, and then paused, thought for a second, and added a little thoughtfully, "Except in some cases."

What exactly he was talking about was unclear, but there was a mischievous twinkle in his eyes that indicated it was probably something unfit for proper conversation, not that Chance ever cared about such things. He grinned cheekily at Thomas, looking about as innocent as an inmate.

The crossbows were still very cool; the first shot, however, missed him by several inches, veering sideways as Chance sidestepped it easily. He lifted his brows, a laugh escaping him.

"Yes, good strategy," he said with a wink. "I'm glad to see that you're learning quickly."

His own shot wasn't the greatest, but it did at least graze.

Tommy thought that he got the joke (he was making a joke, right?) and barked out a laugh before distancing himself from the other man. He had thought, for a moment, that he had seen something mischievous in Chance's gaze, and it was rather intriguing, something to store away and investigate further later, perhaps.

After his rather embarrassing first attempt at a strike, he readied himself for the counter attack that was sure to come, though even knowing it was coming could not prepare him for the speed with which the arrow flew at him, mildly terrifying but in a way that got his adrenaline pumping, the same way that left him feeling exhilarated and wanting for more, even when an attempt to dodge served to do nothing but to take the hit in his shoulder instead of his chest, an icy pain blooming from the impact point, though that soon faded.

It was his first time experiencing a hit to his shield from another weapon, and Thomas had rather liked the feeling.

"Ha, very good! Perhaps I will now learn even more quickly in order to save myself." He whirled on his heel, letting off another shot, this time from his left gauntlet.

Which also went wide, though it was at least closer than his last had been!

Oh, good, someone with a sense of humor that was on par with his own; Chance was starting to think that this Thomas guy was going to be a lot more interesting than he'd seemed at first glance, which was rather surprising and pleasing all at once.

He took a few steps backwards, lifting a hand and pulling an arrow from thin air, notching it carefully on the wire of his bow.

"That's a good way of thinking," said Chance with a smile. "You do what you can to survive, that's how it works. And sometimes you're gonna get in messy s**t - I haven't actually gotten to that point yet, except for once or twice, but even so, you've already got the right idea."

The next shot from him went sideways, missing Chance by inches. He laughed, firing off his own arrow.

"It's kinda nice knowing someone misses as much as I usually do, I'm not gonna lie."

"So it is not so different to life before coming here, than. Messy, difficult at times, a trial of survival, but rather a grand adventure! Sounds awfully exciting." He continued to grin, attempting to dart to the side again as another of Chance's arrows came cutting through the air towards him, but again he was not quick enough to avoid the stinging strike that barreled into the side of his stomach this time, harder and more painful then the first but, again, there was a quick easing of the pain as if it had not existed in the first place.

As he moved, he managed to restring his right gauntlet, and while he might have stumbled at being hit, he was quick to bounce back, to straighten, to aim, and to release.

This one flew true and met it's mark, and he couldn't help but let out a whoop of good cheer.

"But I see you must have improved if hitting me is any indication." His lilted accent sounded even more jovial than before. "I refuse to believe it is just because I am slow."

"Messy, yet so far I think it's actually been pretty interesting," said Chance, pulling another arrow into existence and tapping it thoughtfully against the side of his head. "I've met some curious people, and I've seen some weird-a** s**t, but so far it's actually been not too shabby."

Barring that one time he'd almost gotten himself and Ripley killed in the Haunted House.

Tommy's next shot didn't miss, which was both appreciated and met with a certain amount of pain as the arrow cut across Chance's arm. He lifted a hand and rubbed at the spot where it had hit, trying to ease some of the ache away and letting out a laugh.

"There you go, you're getting the hang of things," he said lightly. "And I feel like I've improved kind of a little, though not very much."

This was made clearly evident as his next shot went far and wide.

"Ah yes, this is what I hope for! Interesting people, weird things~" He waggled his fingers as well as they could be waggled from within their gauntlets, and quick as he could, reset the strings on both while narrowly missing getting hit by another of Chance's arrows. "Beautiful people as well...though I think those may be of abundance here." He gave Chance a playful wink before letting another electric blue bolt fly.

This one was just a graze, it seemed, so much so that he wondered if it even hit the other man at all. He squinted, eyebrows furrowing slightly. "So, where are you from?" He asked, giving his head a small shake as he went back to grins and good cheer once more.
