This was the room they'd said they put her in and Cinnabar swept into it like a hurricane, her boots rapping on the floor as chains rattled. The dolls made little impression on her beyond annoyance and she brushed them aside impatiently as she stormed forward, sending them clacking against each other.

Across the room sat the woman she was looking for, chained to a chair and looking worse for her captivity. Pale hair hung in a mess about her face, her dress was dirty and worn. Cinnabar remembered their first meeting... running into her outside the mess the senshi prince had made, flirting as she covered threats. She had looked so lovely and poised that night and she would have been happy to welcome that pretty face into the fold... but who knew? Maybe soon she would, but there were more important things on Cin's mind right now. Things of a Red Planet nature.

"You." Cinnabar snapped, coming to a sharp halt before the knight of Cosmos. Her tail betrayed her agitation with its flicking back and forth, if the stomping about hadn't, and she braced her hands on her scaled hips. "Hvergelmir, right? I have some questions for you and I'm in no mood for bullshit. I'm not here to torture you and I could care less what the uppers want to know..."

The half youma shifted her weight from foot to foot, uneasy with the conflict in her own mind. She didn't want this... hadn't asked for it. She had just started to feel like she was putting the pieces back together, and now that damn Kairatos had broken it all again.

"I need to know about Mars Knights."

It was some effort for Hvergelmir to pick her head up from off her shoulder. Too much energy taken recently -- not enough sleep, and no food for days. Her stomach rolled hard with churning acid. She didn't want to have to try and concentrate on surviving another interview right now, not in the state she was in.

"What exactly is it you need to know?" she asked on a resigned sigh. All Cinnabar's pacing was making her feel dizzier and more exhausted.

The half youma growled at the girl's lack-luster response. Stepping forward, she crouched and set a knee to the floor, reaching with both hands to cup her face firmly and hold it up. She turned it a little, side to side, and grumbled to herself.

"You're next to useless... If I didn't think it would make you sick, I'd shove an energy orb down your throat..." Cinnabar said. Shaking her head, she released her and rocked back, her fingers flexing restlessly. "I don't know. Everything, but I don't think you're in any shape to cover such a broad subject."

Red lips pressed together, trying to form the formless mass of giant-question-mark in her head into something that would get her somewhere.

"I have never sought very deeply into what a knight is, or for that matter what a senshi is. I know how to fight you and I know why the Negaverse wants me to, and that has always been good enough for me. Schörl would be appalled, except I half wonder if she doesn't already think I'm an idiot who doesn't take my job seriously enough." The last was said with a snort through her nose. "But now we have a mars knight in the other room and suddenly I'm interested. He purified, didn't he? He was an agent, once. Agents become Knights and Knights become Agents... So. Why did he become a Mars knight, specifically? Is there some sort of system? And why are they OF a planet? Senshi all have their own, from what I've seen."

Why did I become Mars? It is some randomly assigned thing? And Tanais...

"What are Wonders? Are they always rivers?"

Hvergelmir forced her eyes to focus on Cinnabar. It wasn't easy -- the dark-haired woman kept blurring in her tired vision. Her back hurt.

"My Wonder is a well," she said, tilting her head sideways slightly to indicate her left shoulder. "As you can see. Camelot's is a city. Babylon's is too." She shrugged. "It's on Wikipedia, this stuff."

(In a better state, she might've lamented her answers, which reflected the glibness of sheer exhaustion and the fact that Cinnabar had admitted to never knowing or caring what the knights and senshi she killed even were. She'd have remembered that her role was always to accept, to take people as they came to her and not require they meet a standard of improvement before they started asking her questions. To be gentle and soft and nice. Today, she was just sleepy.)

"Tell me how this happened to you," she suggested in a light voice, feeling a little floaty. "And I'll trot out the story of the Knight Academy and where we come from." She sighed. "You're such a strange woman."

Cinnabar gave a crooked, toothy smile.

"Strange seems a polite term for it. Horrifying, monstrous... Those would be better, don't you think?" She rolled her shoulders, her chains rattling. "I know what I look like, you don't have to sugar coat it. I never thought to check Wikipedia for information on knight wonders... How would a website on earth know what a place on Mars is like, hmm?"

Settling back on her heels, Cinnabar lifted her hand to display the black claws for the knight, flexing her fingers to force them out into view.

"There is a long story behind how I became 'like this', but I suppose you mean the youma bits specifically... The short version of it is that I was overly ambitious and over confident of my own abilities and I tried to take a youma partner before I was a captain. Most lieutenants that try are killed by the youma... Mine tried to eat me." She patted her side, where teeth had sunk into her flesh. There were no outward marks, but she could still remember the pain of it. "It was in the process of absorbing me when the General-Queen showed up. She promoted me and our bodies merged... But the power let me fight it off and I came out on top. It's still in there though... I can feel it's mind, somewhere under mine."

Her fingers tapped her temple and she flashed white fangs. Oh she could definitely feel it... And sometimes worse than others.

"But, my youma has nothing to do with why I'm here and if your morbid curiosity is assuaged, I want to know about Mars knights specifically. If you have to give me a whole history lesson, fine, but I want to know about them... What makes one and why they feel so... Bonded to each other."

Why do I feel so bonded to them?

Hvergelmir yawned. "Places on Earth were probably named for foreign Wonders -- or the other way around. I haven't remembered that yet. I don't know which." She blinked a few times at Cinnabar, trying to read her expression when she described herself. Was there any regret, there, in horrifying and monstrous? Any bitterness?

It would've been easier if the room weren't so dark and Cinnabar weren't so blurry. Rude.

"The Knighthood was established through the kingdom of Earth over a thousand years ago. It was based here on this planet, which housed the Knights' Academy where new initiates could come to train. During the war, Queen Beryl and her army of ex-knights laid siege to the Academy, defended only by a few knights and the children studying there, and ripped the entire structure down into the Earth, creating the Rift and the youma who live there. But the Knighthood was as much based on Earth as it was in Earth's alliance with other worlds. Knights could study to serve their posts at other worlds in the galaxy, each serving within an Order and a set of traditions for their world. The Order of Mars -- " An epithet came to her from a memory she'd had before, an encouter with one of them. "The Red Brethren -- was one of the orders of knights. A ferocious lot, the Martians."

She furrowed her brow quizzically. "Is there some reason you didn't ask Kairatos? Is he still alive? Hurt?"

There was, suddenly, a low warning rattle of sound, as though some large beast had entered the room without them hearing it. Cinnabar coughed and the sound cut out as she realized she was making it.

"I'm asking you." She growled as she rocked back suddenly and pushed herself to her feet, starting up her pacing again with long strides. "He was fine, as much as could be expected, when I was in there to drain him... I haven't seen him since, but Schörl has gone in to... talk to him. As far as I'm aware, he's still alive. Beyond that, who knows?"

An order with an academy set up on Earth, overthrown by Queen Beryl many years ago. It was more than she had known before, but it still didn't reach the heart of the confusion. It didn't answer why she felt like this or why she had become that woman after purification. Was it real? A hallucination cause by their magic? Every thought of Tanais made her rebel instinctively against it, against what it meant, even if she didn't consciously know what that was.

"What are Mars Knights like? Or do you only know the Bull?" Cinnabar kept her back or most of her side to Hvergelmir as she paced, unwilling to look at her shining in the dimness that youma eyes made far clearer. "Are they all like him?"

Cinnabar was . . . growling? The sound shook her out of her exhaustion, a little -- nerve-fueled adrenaline responding immediately to stimulus in order to get her heart and her senses going at a better clip. The half-youma-half-woman came sharply into focus in the dim.

As far as I'm aware, he's still alive. Beyond that, who knows?

It was painful to think about Kairatos. He had a passionate disposition; he was a fighter, a scrapper. And he was fierce in what he did -- he would draw their ire in captivity even more than he already had outside it. And he was what she'd egged him on in becoming: a visibly proud example of someone happy and free in their choice of leaving the Negaverse. They would make him pay dearly for it. They had to.

Cinnabar wouldn't say his name. Hvergelmir thought there was something in that -- from a woman she knew full well to have been a part of Royal Knight Kairatos's wolf pack, as it were, the great and wild knights he'd run with. There was confusion there in the way she paced.

And the whole situation -- Cinnabar having come here, of all places, like a man buying a prostitute so she can listen to him talk about his day for an hour, comfort his ego, hear him confess all his dirty little secrets he can't tell to his wife -- it smacked of a deep inner conflict with no comfortable means of expressing itself.

Still, it was an opportunity. And not difficult, not compared to all that Schörl asked of her. She could take Cinnabar's anger, her confusion, and give them back to her gentled in the form of answers. Some people were well served by learning what it felt like to be listened to. Some people needed a confessor before they could understand sin.

Well, the Negaverse is your wife, not me. I'll listen without judging.

"I know a few," she said. "Each is their own -- no knightly order requires you lose your individuality, they'd never function. But they're similar, at heart. Driven. Relentless. Reckless. I got in a fistfight with one of the knights of Mars once to protect one of your lieutenants he was trying to kill." She smiled with sudden pride at the memory. "He punched me in the face -- I had the biggest black eye for days, and cuts right across my cheek. Mars Knights -- they run hot, if I had to say. A commonality of temper."

Driven, relentless, reckless? Hot-headed, Kairatos had said.

So, there were some similarities... but it meant nothing. She was a Negaverse Captain, she was not a knight. Mars or otherwise. There was no river on a red planet waiting for her to return to its banks. Her power came from Metallia and she was loyal to her General-Queen... despite her treasonous thoughts.

Cinnabar slowed in her pacing, coming to a halt as she looked the Cosmos knight over with a new focus. Fighting with her own kind? One black eyebrow lifted.

"You're awfully brave, glow bug. For someone who's a piss-poor fighter." She couldn't help the way it made her lips quirk, the expression fading as quickly as it appeared. "Good tip for all situations; move your face out of the way of the fists."

Had things been different... she would have liked this woman. It didn't matter now though. There was no telling how she would come out of this captivity.

"I'm done with my questions. You should go back to sleep, you're going to need it."

Well, that was it. She'd gotten whatever it was she wanted to know, and now she was leaving.

"I hope you found what you came here for, then."

I hope you found Tanais of Mars. I hope you start to see her shadow when you turn corners and the light catches you just right. I hope you realize she's been there all along with you, whispering quietly in your heart.

I hope, someday, you begin to understand that she's the thing inside you that fights, the thing that keeps the youma at bay.

"Good luck, Captain Cinnabar. If you need anything else -- " She smiled wryly. "You know where to find me."

Cinnabar huffed a soft laugh as her tail swung lazily.

"I don't know what I found. But it'll have to be enough for now." She said as she hooked her thumbs in the belt around her waist. She still had a thousand questions that refused to come to order, but each only raised more questions, brought more confusion. This was unstable ground, she would need to tread softly lest she bring everything crashing down around her.

Turning sharply on her heel, the half-youma took one step and disappeared, teleporting herself out of the fairgrounds entirely. Her shift was done. There would be another later and she had enough to think about between now and then.
