A few days after the holidays, and he found himself bored.

This wasn't really that unusual for Chance, but on this particular occasion he decided it was better to actually get up and do something instead of sleep the entire day (which had originally been his plan). So he dressed himself in a pair of worn skinny jeans and a turquoise colored shirt with a blazer thrown over it and made his way down the hall towards a certain room in particular.

He knocked at the door to Room 171 with a black-nail painted hand and leaned against the wall beside it.

"Hey, Ripley, you in? It's Chance."

Chance's question was met with silence, but if he listened closely he might have been able to hear Ripley's soft steps crossing his modest room. The turning of the handle was a lot more obvious though, as the old knob creaked with the twist, and the door did the same as it did what Ripley oddly approved of: complained about being moved for a visitor.

"Chance." He said in greeting, deciding to not answer the other man's question simply because it was pretty obvious at this point that he was indeed 'in'. "Belated Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year." He said out of courtesy alone before opening the door a little more, allowing himself that half step onto the threshold of the doorway.

"I've been meaning to contact you." This was said a little more sincerely, and not without the need to bury a tiny, forming knot of something he couldn't place; after all, the last time he had seen Chance, he had basically sold him his 'special friend'...and a lot had happened since then, between the two of them. "How have you been?" Continued niceties first, he supposed.

He waited patiently, because in spite of the fact that there was no verbal response, Chance had thought that he'd heard a noise from behind the closed door anyway. He'd give it another few seconds, and if it turned out to be his imagination, then he would go back.

But there was a creaking sound, and then the door was pushed open, and Chance lifted his head, offering the other man a smile. It had been a while; they hadn't seen each other since before the new year, and nothing really exciting had happened to Chance during that time (except that he was currently sporting a new pair of earrings, as well as the rings he'd gotten from Claude). However, he had rather thought that his holidays had been a little quiet; so, now that they were over, visitations were in order.

Chance gave Ripley a smile, still leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets.

"Hey," he said lightly. "Happy belated holidays. I've been all right, really. Thought I'd swing by and see if you wanted to do something. You doing all right? It's been a bit."

Ripley noticed the earrings and the new rings, but he said nothing about them - he didn't imagine that complimenting such a thing on a man was considered proper. Not that he ever really worried about such a thing, and was fairly sure that Chance wouldn't have cared either.

"I'm fine, thank you. ~ And sure, I'm not busy." He did lean away from the door to close his book and put on his shoes, but before he reached the door, he paused. "Did you have anything in mind?" Because he might have to change his shoes.

Chance would have been delighted with the compliments, had Ripley decided to offer them, but either way he was still just pleased Ripley had opened the door in the first place. Finn was a much easier person to get ahold of, if only because Ripley was both less talkative and less social than Finn was, but that didn't mean that Chance enjoyed the company any less.

"Great," he answered, giving the other man a smile. "I was hoping you were free. And I was thinking we might do like a training thing, if you're up for that?"

He scratched his chin thoughtfully. "I haven't done any of the courses yet myself, so I figured having someone to do them with would make things a little bit more fun."

Training.

Ripley looked at him for a moment, a quiet stare as his cogs worked, and finally he looked down, taking off his shoes to put on an older, slightly more used pair. He had been training, and all of them were terrible, and there was no point in wasting good shoes on terrible things.

"Sure. Any preference?" Between the pair of them, there were two obvious choices; but it really depended on what Chance wanted to do. "Or have you read up on them at all?" Because there were two obvious choices didn't mean that the others were any less good, of course. But as he spoke he made his way out of his room, turning and locking the door behind him.

Chance wondered if the whole training thing would be an issue, since Ripley was just looking at him with the sort of stoic stare that he had started to associate with the white haired man. He waited patiently, however, a small smile still on his face, until Ripley began to move, switching from one pair of shoes to the other.

He sensed a bit of reluctance from Ripley Crowell, but at least the answer had still been yes, anyway. Chance let out a little hum.

"I was thinking that Deathsweeper one looked like it had potential," he said thoughtfully. "I've read up on a few of them, and that one didn't look like...well, okay, they all looked kind of intense, but that one looked interesting."

Chance glanced back at Ripley. "But I figured I'd come and ask you if you wanted to come along anyway, since I hadn't seen you in a while, and I like your company."

"Deathsweeper it is." At least that one was piloted with golems, so it was likely the safest of the training. "It's...interesting." Like getting torn apart interesting. With a destination in mind he headed down the hallway and towards the training grounds, keeping pace with Chance despite neither really seeming to lead.

The compliment earned Chance a rare, but still small, smile. "And I, yours." Granted there hadn't been much, but a near-death experience was always a good, solid way to get to know someone. "I appreciate the small change in routine." One that involved a fairly fresh face all things considered, at least.

"By the way." He started, wanting to know before they went any further, despite the curious sense of dread that formed in the pit of his stomach. "How much do I owe you?"

Chance slid his hands into the pockets of his pants and fell easily into step alongside Ripley. The rare smile was both noted and appreciated, Chance feeling slightly like he'd achieved something worthwhile just from that, even if it wasn't technically much, all things considered.

With Ripley, even just a small smile was a success.

"That's good," said Chance with a light laugh. "I'd hate to think I was pestering you by stopping by. You're pretty level-headed, and you always seem to know what you want to do, so I find that refreshing and comfortable."

His eyes moved sideways as his lifted his brows.

"Owe me?" Chance repeated curiously. "Owe me for what?"

Chance's assessment of him was met with an unsurprisingly level stare, though his mind was working, filing away what the other man said while simultaneously adding his own explanations and doubts, all of which placed the appropriate amount of modest self-destruction on each seemingly positive trait.

"Thank you." He said, instead of the many reasons he had conjured up as to why Chance was wrong. "You don't pester me." He added, as if that would put any further fears of it to rest. He liked Chance. He was ponderously quiet and easy-going, and was quite quick to say nice things, but all of which was done without being over bearing or overboard. "You can stay." He continued, a small smirk and a short amused snort backing up his brief joke.

"Finn." He then answered the curious parrot, his own gaze sliding to see Chance, though his head had to turn a little bit to make use of his glasses. "For whatever you got up to: Drugs, off-island trips, general labour." Finn was hard work sometimes, even without the physical aspects.

The level stare was received with a certain amount of casual acceptance, since Ripley wouldn't have been Ripley if he'd done anything else. Chance gave a small nod, and then laughed, glancing down at his feet. "I'm glad to hear that," he said lightly. "Not pestering you is an accomplishment I take seriously."

Which was true. He took another few steps and then the lightbulb seemed to ding on in his mind as Ripley explained, and Chance's smile grew a little wider.

"Oh, that," he said, and waved a hand. "It's no big deal, seriously. I know you were stressed as s**t during your time in the infirmary and just wanted to relax and heal, so really, it's all good. You don't owe me anything."

They had almost reached the place where the course was. Chance's gaze flickered curiously back to Ripley.

"Did it help at all?"

"Are you sure?" Ripley frowned, trying to decide if Chance as being modest or not. There was a chance that Finn wasn't easy to keep away from him for so long, but he supposed he could have been wrong. "No need to be modest." There was a small part of him that wanted to know what happened, though he knew ignorance was likely bliss; which was a weird thought, considering it shouldn't have bothered him.

He blamed Finn and his mild confession for all of these strange thoughts.

"It did, thank you. The silence was amazing." Even remembering the blissful silence was enough to make him sigh in relief. A moment later they rounded the corner into the training grounds, and Ripley made his way towards Deathsweeper, which opened to a series of pods to control the golems. He moved towards one of them, putting his hand on the handle to open it.

"Ready to get started?"

General Information
The large stone cavern with the tiled floor and large yellow smiley face is likely familiar to at least several trainees, and may even feature in a few nightmares from time to time. Welcome to Deathsweeper, the training course that may only be attempted via c-type golem, and often acts as a testing ground for the Life Division's more painful creations. Stealth and detecting imminent danger are vital for Death Hunters and anyone who has to spend extended amounts of time near Caelius. The Deathsweeper chamber is full of hidden traps that only the finest of survival instincts can survive unscathed.

If you fail: you get to once again relive the sensation of dying. Painfully and sometimes quite strangely.

If you win: you have survived stepping 5 tiles into the room. Anything further is purely for peen and bragging rights.

    Mechanics
  • roll 1 d10
  • check for hp loss and death
  • decide whether or not to use your bonuses
  • if you survive, repeat.
  • roll list: the traps are ICly constantly changing, so feel free to get creative as to what exactly those traps are!
  • -50% HP is off your full HP, so if you hit -50% twice, then you are 100% KO'd

    01. horrible death
    02. - 50% HP
    03. live
    04. live
    05. - 50% HP
    06. - 50% HP
    07. horrible death
    08. - 50% HP
    09. live
    10. horrible death

    Bonus Mechanics
  • This bonus is consumable.
  • All participants get a flag, this flag will allow your character to notice something about the area they're stepping into. OOCly this means you can adjust your rolled number, up or down, by one point. Instinctive moves are used in the same manner as flags. These are stackable, so if you have 1 flag + 1 instinctive move, you can use them up in order to adjust your roll by two.

(If you roll a 1, you may not move your number down to 0, -1, or 10. And 10 cannot be adjusted to 1 or 11.)

  • Trainees: 1 flag
  • Death Trainees: 1 flag + 1 instinctive move
  • Hunters: 1 flag + 1 instinctive move
  • Death Hunters: 1 flag + 2 instinctive moves

"I'm sure," said Chance with a smile. "It was just friends helping out friends, right? Not really all that big a deal, so seriously, don't worry about it, I'd help you out even if it wasn't about Finn, so we're good, Ripley."

His mild smile turned into a wider one at the rest of Ripley's statement, and Chance gave a little nod. "Glad to hear it. Or not hear it, really," he added, with a slight smirk of amusement.

The Deathsweeper course was a mysterious thing, and Chance gave the golems a curious look before taking a breath and stepping instead.

"Absolutely," he said cheerfully.

Except his first step turned out to be not so pleasant, because there was a loud crashing sound and something exploded beneath him, Chance stumbling sideways and being very grateful for the golem form.

"Jeez. This course isn't kidding around."
