They'd hurt her. Amphitrite couldn't say who most of 'them' even were; she hadn't known them, and their faces had been lost to the edges of shadow and blurred vision after her energy had been stolen away.

The lash on her back had been crudely bandaged, but treated minimally, and still ached when she moved. Bruises and smaller cuts laced her like intricate patterns, and one of her eyes was rimmed in black and swollen half-closed.

Deep down, some desperate part of her wanted to scream, but more out of frustration than anything. For god's sakes, she didn't know anything. Even if she tried to keep herself together the best that she could by indulging in happy fantasies of escape, she had nothing worth offering to these people. She could hear screams now and then from others, distant, enough to know she wasn't alone here. The thought was not comforting. Soon they'd realize how useless she was, wouldn't they?

She heard a sound - and even as her world swam and her head throbbed, she forced herself to sit up as straight as she could.

Now this was how to run an operation. As he roamed the hallways of the abandoned funhouse, Chrysotile decided he had to hand it to the Negaverse operatives of Destiny City. Unlike his home town of Chicago, where Chaos ran the show with virtually no opposition, Destiny City was fairly teeming with those white-uniformed refugees from other planets. It was war, plain and simple. But this operation, with the front being the New Year's Eve ball, promised to be a resounding success. Whatever information his superiors were seeking, he was sure it was vital to the mission. The aliens were a scourge, and it was his job -- no, his purpose -- to eradicate them wherever he found them, in whatever way was most expedient. The Negaverse must prevail.

His foot scuffed on the floor, and a movement in the shadows caught his attention. It was a lone senshi, tied to a chair, beaten and bloody. Nobody had even been posted as guard. She must have been deemed either useless or rendered harmless -- his superiors had likely gotten all the information they could out of her already. A simple probe revealed she'd been pretty thoroughly drained of energy. Still, he could have a little fun with her.

"Look what we have here," he smiled as he approached her. "Poor little senshi. All alone in the dark."

She shuddered in spite of herself when he spoke to her, but she forced herself to smile as pleasantly as she could to the man whose silhouette was outlined in light, though his features were bathed in the dark. Something in her eyes was already pleading as she fixed her eyes on him. Amphitrite was scared, beaten, but not without hope. Cinnabar's advice hadn't helped her so far, but -- what else could she do? There was nothing more she could offer to try and cooperate. But still, they kept coming, kept demanding, kept hitting and screaming and --

Her voice was raw from her own screams as she tentatively called back, "Not anymore. Can I help you with anything?"

Chrysotile heard the pain and fear and exhaustion in her voice, and as he drew closer he saw the damage that had been done to her pretty face. Yeah, the senshi had been thoroughly worked over by others at this point. Not much left for him to do. Except…

He was a social work major in college, after all, and those studies included all flavors of psychology.

"I think you've helped us plenty, little one," he said. Stopping in front of her, he knelt down on one knee to get a better look at her, and to speak more at her level, thus posing less of a threat. Not that he usually didn't want to come across as threatening -- he was playing a different game this time. "What's your name?"

He's going to have his own kind of fun with her… XD

Pleasant so far; didn't mean he'd stay that way, naturally, but Amphitrite was willing to try her luck. What else was there really to do? It wasn't as though she could walk away from the situation. The most she could do was hope that he was reasonable and civil like Cinnabar had been - what she wouldn't give to be drained by her again.

"Amphitrite, " she said softly, meeting his eyes as warmly as she was able. Even if she was hoping for the best, no one could really blame her for being a little tense with him so close. Even if it was in a non-threatening way, it didn't take much to switch from soft to aggressive. He wouldn't have been the first. "Senshi of Shells. - maybe I ask what you'd like me to call you?" she asked tentatively. Some of these people didn't appreciate questions, after all.

The tall lieutenant smiled at her. This was going to be entertaining. "Chrysotile," he replied. "Nice to meet you." He studied her bruised face; she was a pretty girl despite the damage that had been done to her by others. For a brief moment he wondered why they'd had to hurt her like they did, but then he reminded himself -- she was the enemy. She could have fought back, and probably did. The alien senshi were nothing to be trifled with, even if they looked relatively harmless. Although in this case, she truly was harmless.

"Tell me, why do you think you are here?" he asked. He wanted to hear it directly from her. It'd give him a direction for his game.

"Nice to meet you too - I wish it was under better circumstances." She forced out a soft chuckle, although it sounded almost painful. It was pitiful, really.

His question was almost enough to make her laugh again. Wasn't it obvious why she was there? Well... the basic reason. In spite of her gut reaction, her soft smile didn't falter. "That depends, " she said, flicking her tongue out across her dried, chapped lips as she stitched the words together. "Do you mean the main reason we're here, or me specifically? - we're here because we're Order and we have information you want."

Her shoulders slumped a bit, subconsciously, as she went on, "I'm here because I made a mistake. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I should have given this up when I had the chance. I wanted to be a hero, but I'm not." It was exhausting to say it again and again, to be reminded of how much of a useless failure she was. You'd think it would get easier. It didn't. "So, here I am. Just wasting your time."

"You're not wasting my time," Chrysotile said reassuringly, "and I know why the rest of you are here. I was asking specifically about you." It was clear from her response that the girl had been swept up as a matter of course, because she was Order and not because she was known to have any information. He guessed she was pretty low-level, just as he was. She wouldn't have had much information to wring out.

He nodded as he spoke to her, his voice gentle and soothing. "That's right, you made a mistake, wanting to play hero. It's not your job -- it's our job to protect the citizens of Earth. It has been our job for millennia. You are simply on the wrong side of this war. That's all. You should have gotten out of that ballroom while you could. But you didn't, so..." He shrugged. "Here you are."

It was funny how it was just occuring to her now, in this place, at this time -- Amphitrite had never before heard the logic of why the people in the negaverse did the things that they did. Of course, any villain had their twisted reason for fighting. But she'd never heard it before.

Maybe if she was honest -- did she really had anything to lose from trying a new approach? "I've never heard that before, " she expressed, which was important. More important was it gave her the chance to say, "My father's a citizen of Earth. My mother. My brothers. ... I was born here, too." She strained against her bonds a little, trying to stir up some kind of passion with her words. "I know I made a mistake, and you do too. Right? - you know I wouldn't do this again. Please, if... if your job is to protect the people of earth, then can't you help me? I haven't caused any trouble."

Chrysotile chuckled softly. Poor naive little thing. "No, I'm afraid you don't understand. Your soul, your starseed, is alien. It is from somewhere other than Earth -- it's from someplace called Amphitrite. That makes you one of the enemy. Mind you," he purred, "we could remedy that. Remove the alien taint from your starseed, make you pure in the eyes of the Negaverse. You want to make things right, so you don't make mistakes like the one you made again? You could join the side of Earth." He leaned back a little and tilted his head. "It's something to keep in mind."

He wasn't the first person to mention it, and Amphitrite shuddered visibly at the thought of it. "I've never been to Amphitrite - I don't care about Amphitrite, " she asserted softly, meeting his gaze. "What I care about is my family, and I know what happens when - " She swallowed the lump in her throat. "I don't want to hurt Earth, I don't want to be part of this anymore - but what you're saying is as good as dying. I can't." It was literally the stuff of nightmares for her, not that he'd know it. "I'd do anything but that, please."

"There's no way out, I'm afraid. Once you're in, you're in. You're either one of us or you're the enemy -- there's no longer the option of neutral ground for you."

As good as dying? Chrysotile thought back to his own corruption. It had been almost unbearably painful, but once it was over he felt so much stronger and more capable. More pure. "You exaggerate," he chuckled. "I mean, look at me -- I went through it, and I'm still here, alive and better than ever. Any trace of taint has been burned out of me."

He leaned back in, blue eyes sincere. "You don't have to worry for now. I have no intention of hurting you, not even to bring you over to our side." She didn't need to know that he wasn't yet capable of corruption. Reaching out, he lightly touched her damaged face. "You can trust me."

So much for playing the sympathy card... but what he went on to say left her completely dumbfounded, her eyes wide as she stared at him. "Exaggerate?" she breathed out, her shoulders slumping. "Chrysotile, I - no."

Amphitrite shook her head, wondering to herself how much the negaverse did and didn't tell their officers. "Were - were you always negaverse? - maybe that's one thing, but - it's different for us, when we change over." She bit her bottom lip, glancing down at her lap. "If I corrupted, I wouldn't remember my family, I wouldn't remember my friends - I wouldn't remember myself anymore. I'd be one of the missing, the dead. They'd never even know I was..."

She looked up again and sighed, her eyes moist at the edges all over again. "Even if it meant living, would you give your family up? Could you do that?" Wasn't that more human than alien? Could he see that?

Still, even if she was worked up, Amphitrite relaxed when there was no threat of pain or corruption on the horizon. She breathed out a sigh and tried to give him a thankful smile. It almost worked. "Thank you."

Amphitrite's words gave Chrysotile pause. Would he be able to give up his family, sacrifice everything he'd been fighting for, the very reason he'd joined the Negaverse? He shook his head slightly, the faintest of movement. He still didn't quite understand -- he hadn't forgotten his family when his father had plunged his hand into Emory's chest and made him Chrysotile, nor had they forgotten him. There had been no real sacrifice on his part as far as he was concerned. But then, maybe it was as the senshi had said. Maybe it was because he'd always been Negaverse. Would his family still recognize him if he'd been a senshi before he was brought over? Would they remember him?

I'd remember you, Amphitrite, he thought as he studied her face. How could he ever forget her? She was so sweet, so pretty, even as injured as she was.…

He shook his head again. No, she was the enemy. He couldn't allow himself to overlook that.

With a deep breath to steel himself, he withdrew his hand and sat back. The psychological game he'd been playing wasn't much fun anymore. "I won't hurt you, but I can't help you. I'm sorry." He stood, towering over her and blocking the light, casting her once more in shadows. "I… I have to get back on patrol. I don't think anyone else will be around to harass you. It was nice meeting you, Amphitrite." I can only hope we meet again under better circumstances…

Abruptly he turned on his heel and walked away.

He was drawing back so abruptly that Amphitrite couldn't help but think she'd touched a nerve. Yes, that look in his eyes, something she'd said had actually reasonated with him, hadn't it?

Desperately, almost wildly, she drew up painfully against her bonds, her eyes wide. "Wait, please! Don't go, Chryso - !"

The lieutenant was retreating, and she grew more desperately, careless of the tears that welled up in her eyes - because it was the closest she'd gotten to any negaverse officer truly wavering. "Please, we don't have to talk about that! You don't have to go, please don't go, please -- !"

But it was too late. He was already gone, and she was alone again. A strangled sob erupted from her throat as she slumped in her chair, all fight gone from her as she was again left with nothing but darkness and pain.
