Lenka was gorgeous.
And not just the senshi—the planet.
Or whatever it was; Goretti was still trying to figure out the difference between Asteroids and Comets and Planets and…this was unlike anything he'd ever imagined. No text book or documentary had prepared him to see a planet like this. He thought they were all cold, hard rock—or all lava. Not lush and green and alive.
Today was a special day. Or night. Or day? It was different here than on Earth and he wasn't sure quite what time it was. But it was special, because Lenka had invited him into space with her. He was certain she'd said there would be watermelon involved, but he wasn't sure if she was just playing a prank on him and was just waiting for the right opportunity to encase him in rinds. He was trying to stay close to her (but not too close, because that would have been suspicious); Lenka seemed like it was going to be an easy place to get lost, and Goretti…didn't like being lost.
Even on Earth.
And getting lost on Lenka?
…If her planet was anything like her, he wasn't sure he'd survive the day. Night? Day.
"Lenka, are you sure this place is safe? Feels like there should be dinosaurs up here," he said, muddling through the foliage as he attempted to look around without straying too far from her. If there were dinosaurs, he'd have to protect her.
…Or maybe it was more the other way around.

Lenka was gorgeous. It was still so green and leafy and perfect and wonderful. The chibi senshi sighed and looked around it, fluffing a plant with her hand lovingly. Finally she looked up at her best friend, and closest senshi partner. “I don’t know if you know it, Goretti. But today is my birthday, and I wanted to bring you up here to celebrate, and to celebrate…I want to share some of this watermelon I grew!”
She began rummaging in her bag, but as she did she went on to tell all about the watermelon. “Now, I bet you think I’m kind of silly to bring you all the way up here to eat watermelon…but the watermelon seeds actually came from here…I just brought them home to try and grow them…” The senshi dug out a Tupperware container filled with very red looking watermelon slices. “See? Look at how good they look…and don’t worry about them being poisoned…I fed one to my pigs and they didn’t die, and I think my mom ate a piece too…anyway.”
She opened the lid and handed a slice to the other chibi. “So I was trying to grow them and literally nothing was happening, so then I thought, Julienne gave me a watering can, and it’s pretty magical…so I watered the plant and literally the next morning it had grown so much. And…well.”
Lenka held up her piece of melon. “This is the final, successful result! Happy Birthday to me!” The girl took a bite of her watermelon, looking beyond pleased with herself.

Goretti looked at her with a surprised expression. How could she think he didn't know it was her birthday? He had only been agonizing over the perfect gift for months. And he still didn't think his present was perfect. He reached into the pocket of his pants and ran his fingers over the smooth surface but found it easy to become distracted by the senshi in front of her. He was trying to plan when to give her this gift, but how could he think of something to say when she stole his breath?
He flushed; that was just goofy to think. "I would love to share your watermelon!" he blurted. "I don't think it's silly at all, I'm really impressed that you grew a watermelon. I thought they were really hard to grow, too! It's, uhm…it's good that it's not poisonous…" He laughed hesitantly, wondering what Lenka would have done if the watermelon was toxic, and what she would have done if her pigs—or her mother!—had gotten sick.
…On second thought, maybe he didn't want to know. This place looked like a good place to bury a body…
Oh! No, not that Lenka would, she was perfect. She would never kill anyone that cared about her, and if she grew her plants with love and affection, how could they have ever been toxic? He quickly reached out to take the slice. "Happy birthday!" he cheered, before sinking his teeth into the crispy fruit.
The crunch was perfect. The juice was perfect. The flavor was perfect.
Goretti's eyes fluttered shut and he let out an audible gasp; he couldn’t contain himself and blurted immediately, "Lenka this is the best thing I've ever eaten—how did you grow this? Did you grow it with love? It tastes like love," he sighed dreamily.

Soon after Lenka finshed her first bite of the melon, she began to feel a little strange…but…but that really just had to be the excitement. The watermelon wasn’t poison, she had just told Goretti that. There was no way that she had a poisoned piece…that was just dumb to think about.
So of course, the only real way to deal with feeling odd was to take another bite. Because that was what made the most sense. She grinned and shook her head. “Of course I made it with love, Goretti. I make everything with love. Love is clearly the best thing in the whole world.”
She was really starting to feel strange now. Her whole body was feeling both hot and cold…and it was tingling like it had been asleep or something…
What was going on? The senshi didn’t want to say anything, but she was feeling just a little nervous now, but she wasn’t going to freak out. Not today. Not on her birthday when she was finally eating her watermelon…this wasn’t fair!

Goretti laughed, but he was still gushing over the fact that Lenka had given him something grown out of love. But Lenka…
Something seemed a little different, and he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. "Are you…okay?" he asked after a moment, lowering the watermelon from his lips. It was difficult to do so; he wanted to take another bite of it, but something was off about Lenka, and it was gnawing at his stomach.
He couldn't put his finger on it, but he hesitantly scooted closer, tentatively holding out a hand as if he knew some magical trick to ensure she was healthy and fine. Because he did not know any magic, his hand instead hovered awkwardly a few inches away from her as he debated attempting to feel her forehead, or shake her, or something.

Lenka shook her head slightly and let the half eaten piece of watermelon fall from her hand, instead putting her hands on either side of her face. “I don’t know what’s going on, Goretti…I don’t feel so good…” Her vision was spinning slightly and she closed her eyes to try and make it stop…but that only made it feel like the whole world was spinning…like her whole world was spinning.
It just felt like everything was spinning!
The senshi stood up and stumbled a few steps away from her friend, opening her eyes and trying to just get ahold of herself. “I don’t know what’s going on…” She murmured again, leaning against a tree. “…But maybe there was something wrong with the watermelon…”
But nobody else had gotten sick from it…and why would there be anything wrong with it…it had to be her. There was just something wrong with her…she was just…
Her fuku began to glow then, as though she was powering up once more. As she felt the warmth of the transformation energies, she felt better almost at once.
When the light died down…Eternal Chibi Lenka was no more. In her place stood someone who looked and felt older and more powerful.
Simply…Eternal Lenka.
She was a chibi no more.

Goretti stared blankly at his friend for a long moment before he slowly got up. Lenka...looked the same, but different, and the poor chibi's head was reeling to try and wrap around what he had just witnessed.
"Lenka," he tested carefully, biting his lip.
"...You...you changed."
It wasn't just her uniform, or her aura--something about her looked like it had changed. A quick analysis told him that he was most certainly still talking to Lenka--the same hair, same eyes, same beautiful face, just...
She seemed so much more grown up. In a totally different league.
The watermelon certainly hadn't had that effect on him (if it could have made him grow like that, he would have gobbled the rest of it in a heartbeat!), but he was certain that it was in some way responsible for this.
...Whatever...this...was.

Lenka blinked, looking around, seeming almost half asleep. That had been…one of the strangest sensations of her life…and she sure hoped she would never have to deal with it again. But…things felt different. Goretti felt different…weaker, somehow…less…
Just somehow less.
Because he was a chibi…and she wasn’t. She was fourteen today…oh… Oh. The senshi blinked and looked down. Her stockings had changed into socks…and she felt better and…
And Goretti felt so much weaker. “Well damn…no wonder nobody was afraid of me before. Well, I’m going to kick some a** now, let me tell you.” She did a little twirl, feeling back to her old self…no…no better than her old self and…and it was swell.
“Goretti, you silly little chibi…I’m Eternal Sailor Lenka, and I’m going to kick a** from now on…I’m not a chibi anymore! This is amazing!” The full reality of the situation had seemed to impress itself on the girl and she flopped on the ground, laughing and just…
It just felt good to finally be as strong as she knew she could be. What a great birthday.

For a few seconds more, Goretti just stared at her; a grin split on his face, but faltered quickly. "Hey," he blurted, "I'm not a silly little chibi. You're like a few days older than me! And you're only a few inches taller!"
He flopped next to her, lips pursed thoughtfully. The idea that they would ever...not be chibis...hadn't really occurred to him. He just sort of thought they'd always be chibis. Or, at least, together. Lenka was always stronger than him, but it didn't feel...weird. Not when they were chibis. But now she was so strong and...
He really needed more of that watermelon. Or something.
"...Lenka, I'm happy you're a senshi--a normal senshi--but..." he faltered. "...We...we're still gonna get to be friends, right?"

Lenka just laughed, snuggling close to Goretti. “I don’t know, maybe I’ll have to find new senshi friends to hang out with, ones that aren’t silly chibis.” She looked over at the other senshi and shook her head, bursting into another round of laughter. “I’m just joking! I’ll always be your friend, ‘retti. You’re one of my best friends. You really are.”
And honestly…maybe he was more than just one of her best friends. But…maybe this wasn’t the time to think about that. Maybe this wasn’t the time to dwell on the fact that maybe she might have a crush on Goretti…maybe it wasn’t the time to think of that at all…but it sure was a good time to take his hand and lace her fingers with his.
Yeah. It was a good time for that.
“I’m glad you were here with me today, Goretti. It really made me happy.”

A noise of (mostly) mock horror slipped from Goretti's lips before she confirmed she was joking. Her being so close made him feel strange—a mixture of nervous and satisfied. He knew it was because he liked her, and while he was glad that she trusted him enough to be so close to him, he had to force himself to stay relaxed. His body wanted to instinctively tense because he was so nervous of messing up.
What if his armpit smelled! What if he got hair up her nose! Was his suit clean? …Oh, jeez, he'd never washed it—how was he supposed to!?
His heart was pounding, but she was close enough that he was worried she could hear it, so he drew in a simple, calming breath…
And then everything felt right.
Her fingers laced with his…
It wasn't just nice. It was just right.
He tilted his head and smiled at her before giving her hand a little squeeze. "I'm glad I was here too, Lenka. It made me really happy, too."

Lenka closed her eyes, listening to the soft sounds of the leaves rustling on her asteroid. This was it. This was…as close to perfection as she could really think of. Honestly, this was the best way to spend a birthday that she could think of…and Goretti was here…and…
“You’re really my best friend. I love you a lot, Orin. I really do.”
With that said, she promptly kissed the other senshi on the cheek and went back to her relaxation on her asteroid, on her birthday…where she was no longer a chibi, all while holding the hand of her best and most trusted friend.
Best. Day. Ever.

Goretti almost couldn't even form words. At first, a giddy sigh fell from his lips—and what could only be described as a giggle followed. He couldn't have imagined today going any better; he felt as great as—no, better than—if it has been his birthday.
Because, this was perfect. This was more than he could have asked for.
And he understood what she was saying because he felt the same way.
"You, too, Millie."
Best. Day. Ever.
