It had started out like any normal day for Vassilis. He'd gotten up, eaten breakfast, and gone for a stroll. It had taken a turn for the odd and frightening sometime around lunch. Vassilis had been looking for something to eat when a strange honking reached his ears. He had followed the sound all the way to the edge of the water to discover what made such a noise like any good curious stallion should do.
That was precisely when things went wrong. Out of the reeds in front of him had sprung a large, white, winged monster. Vassilis had frozen with all eighteen eyes blinking at the creature warily. It had an orange bill, webbed feet of the same color, and beady blue eyes. It's wings were spread wide and it beat the a few times as it slowly approached Vassilis, sizing him up. For precisely half a second Vassilis thought it would turn away and return to the reeds. Instead it had begun to hiss just before it charged him.
Vassilis had panicked. He was not ashamed to admit it. Clearly it had been the right thing to do because now, twenty minutes later, he was still running for his life from the crazy, winged monster. "Somebody help!" He wailed wishing his sister was near to save him but knowing that she was not. "Please! It's going to eat me!!!"

Kumarajiva inhaled deeply of the fragrant herbs. It looked like a normal mint plant, but the smell was different. It had notes of citrus that tickled his senses in a delightful way. He gently plucked some, placing it in the bag he carried, attached to a cord around his neck. Ideally, he wouldn't mix herbs of different scents in one bag. However, he didn't have much choice today. He had been unable to find his second bag (He suspected someone had borrowed it without permission) and was too far away from the Padmapani herd to make multiple trips. He was further afield than he usually went, but his search for new flavors to brew with required it.
As he leaned down to pluck more mint leaves, he paused. Someone was shouting... shouting for help? His heart immediately skipped a beat. He remembered his mother telling him to be careful when he told her he'd be passing beyond the distance of the Padmapani safety patrols. This was exactly the sort of thing he hadn't wanted to encounter. What was after the other soquili? A wolf? A kalona? Something even worse?
His initial instinct was to bolt, knowing that he was no fighter. He managed to pull his instincts together enough to repress the initial reaction, and then thought again. Though the thought filled him with dread, he knew he'd never be able to forgive himself if he abandoned this soquili in need. He gulped and ran towards the victim, who he could hear now galloping quickly away from its pursuer. "Over here!" he called.
