It was early morning the desert a decievingly cool temperature, perfect for a morning excursion. He plotted his route carefully before setting out, again using fabric strips as markers to hopefully prevent confusion in the endless desert environment. He was very afraid he would get lost out here, the consequences of beign caught out in a sandstorm, or even without a route to water were most dire indeed. He was a ways from Tivrod when a shadow passed over him, made all the louder by the silence that surrounded him. He looked up to see a beautiful broad winged shape. he didn't know what it was called, but he would be sure to ask when he returned to the settlement. He admired the bird for its adaptability, its ability to survive day to day flying in incredibly hot temperatures. Another thought him on his last legs until he saw the rocky outcrop covered in dung. Interesting...a nesting ground perhaps? He wanted to go take a a look, judging from his watchers, earning that right would definitely involve a struggle, they didn't know that he wasn't there to eat babies. In reality he just wanted to watch them from close up and learn. Oba was wonderful, everything was different, new and refreshing, he felt free and at home in heart and soul if not body. As he got closer a third bird joined the group and proceeded to dive bomb him.
Well he hadn't thought this would be easy. He put up an arm to ward them off but still got raked pretty good. Sharp beak, sharp claws and they were not small birds either. He had to pause on the edge of the ledge to bat them away, swinging with the butt of his whip, it worked on the first bird which was knocked out cold. But the other two wisened up pretty fast. They dove just out of reach, unless his head was turned then they were bold enough to touch him. They were trickier then the perzi he had met. "Making me work for it ain't yah." Luckily for him his two sailscales were being looked after today by someone else. The little girl who was babysitting them had stalked his camp so often he had finally let her babysit them. He would have been more worried today if they had been with him, an aerial attack with these birds in particular would be dangerous for them. Of course he was asking for his beating, but his sailscales would have taken the brunt for him and that would have been unfair. He had just gotten his head over the top of the cliff face he had been climbing, hanging on by his toes. He saw one nest still had a bird on it, while another nest held four pale white eggs.
They were darling, he smiled. Then the mother hissed at him and her two friends one of which was presumably her mate, raked at him with renewed vigor. His hold on the edge broke and his feet slipped as well, he slid down he rock face and was completely covered in dust and unmentionables in the front. The birds didn't seem to use a latrine. He made a face, then his eye caught a flash of red, blood? He put a hand up to his scalp. Yup, they had got him, they were coming in for another swipe too, he decided that retreat was nessesary. Bleeding in the desert didn't appeal to him much, what if there was something out here that could track the smell? Time for home and bandages. The birds followed him for a while until he passed over an imaginary line and they peeled off, he marked the spot for future reference. By the time he reached home the blood had dried into a scab and he had to wet it down to clean it. The little girl helped him with this too and he made faces when it stung that made her giggle. She was cute, a tiny oban lass, and truth be told a good friend. Her parents didn't seem to mind her hanging around him so he let her, glad of the company and the help with Iniu and Norcrest.
His sailscales looked none the worse for wear so he trusted her enough to let them stay with her again sometime. Head wrapped and cleaned he had a long nap that would aide in healing. One did not become a beast tamer without getting holey it seemed.
