Ivynian
Titanlåvenite-

I'm back in town and would like to see you. Your question about finding out what kind of knight you would be has never been far from my mind these last few months, and with the help of a colleague, I've managed to create a device that should put our questions to rest. Meet me this evening at 10 PM at the Times Circle fountain.

Yours,
Babylon

Babylon sat on the edge of the fountain, the alethiometer held loosely in his gloved hands. There was never any way of being sure Negaversers might agree to your terms of meeting, but Titan had never failed him before. Besides, the solution to months of searching should be enough to bring him out - even if Babylon's strange, prophetic dream had suggested Titan would be a knight of Earth, there was no telling if the officer had had the same one, or what truthfulness the vision had held.

This would settle the matter in far more scientific terms.

Magical terms.

Magitech terms?

Something terms.

Sensing an approaching chaotic signature, Babylon looked up from the device in his hands. Even from this far away, he could see the captain's hulking shoulders, and he raised a hand in greeting. "Titan!" he called. "Good to see you. You look well. Strapping as ever."

All that could really be said about Babylon was that he looked a bit tan and had somehow found even more freckles in his time away and applied all of them directly to his face.

Knight notes came always unexpected, but heart-tugged. The note read, little lantern recognized and not nearly so faded and worn away as the other stored away in his pocket notebook's built in folder. The captain traced fingers over the seal, considering how his day should need rearranged to make the appointed time- there was no way to send word back to confirm or beg later or earlier. Or raincheck. Best to show up.

So he did.

"Babylon of Mercury!" It was called back in greeting, ungloved hand raised in like greeting on approach at three-to-ten. It was sad that winter turned all the fountains silent by necessity. Titan wondered if the lights were still on the knight, and if they were, would they have reflected in the water of a fountain, fair at the dark of night? The circuit lines were easy to confirm, even if the rest wasn't. Babylon was still marked, though not sick still. "It has been a long while. Not since summer. "

The man's kindness and patience stood still in the mind, as well as the other small knight and her dog. Her name wasn't so forthcoming to memory, not reinforced with notes and hopes. Her face was, though, for the uniqueness of the whole occasion and the great war dog at her heel. "The sun has given you many kisses in the time. "

"Is it true? You ...found a way? Made a way?"

Since summer. Babylon smiled sheepishly - he'd been caught neglecting his friendships, and while he might try to rationalize that he'd been busy, that didn't really excuse not dropping a line to five or six of his closest acquaintances that he'd be out of town. "I was out of the country," he explained. "Studying biodiversity in the Galapagos."

And if that didn't have ******** all to do with being a knight.

"And yeah, I," he flushed, a bit flustered by the way Titan had phrased his observation. "I spent a lot of time out in the sun? Freckles, man, they're my gift and my curse. At least my girlfriend likes them."

But anyway, that wasn't nearly as on-topic as he would have liked, so he'd just get away from it. Babylon held up the alethiometer demonstrably. "Mistral helped," he said. "Like, a lot? She's a genius at this magitech stuff. I couldn't have built this myself, I just came up with the idea, but - it should work. Before that, though, I wanted to ask you..."

Moment of truth, he thought. Moment of truth, moment of truth, moment of truth.

"Did you have a strange dream a few months ago?" he asked. "A really vivid, long one about the future? Do you remember anything about it?"

Titan had no discernable idea what a Galapagos was. Or a biodiversity. Surely this must be amazing, complex, high-powered brain things that happened in a rare and exotic location- like 'Oxford', 'Bogota', and 'Lima'. He gave a slow nod, mouth shifting in an uncertain sort of smile that projected all the things he had absolutely no clue about and was very sorry about that. "I'm sure it was very important. I hope you completed what you needed to."

Again, the captain failed any sort of specOps sobriety tests, not having wherewithal to commit to memory or as important the fact that over the last six month the number of passports marked for going out from Destiny City International to the Galapagos was miniscule in comparison to whole metropolitan population. The brainier side of narrowing down the hunt for captures was just never going to be in his purview. The word 'girlfriend', however, was something to a Common Man's interests in the lives of friends in or out of wars- no particular espionage involved. He has a beloved?!

"I did not know you were in love? Is this also new?" His grey eyes sparkled, bottom lids pushed up with a wide smile. The flush was assumed to accompany the admission and in thoughts of the unknown paramour more than anything Titan himself had said or implied with it. Predictably, the knight tried to bring the subject off his paramour, and Titan let it go amiably. Promises of friendship were one thing, but they were still on opposite sides of a war. He didn't want to cause Babylon discomfort with too many questions a regular friend could ask with impunity- such as to meet such a person, if they were in the war at all as well, if they knew he was Babylon as well as some person that studied Very Impressive Things at Strange, Exotic Places.

Then came the mention of a dream- no, the future vision(s). Titan's smiles peeled away with each passing second like sloughed layers. Worn, the soldier remained in stripped pales and blacks, metals, the skull no longer overshadowed by projected happiness of a friend lost and found anew. "I have had many dreams of that sort. Maybe visions. They haven't stopped. It is not every night now, but each time it is something different. "

"You have had one only?"

The thought of Avalon was enough to bring a flush to Babylon's cheeks - but his smile stopped halfway, as he realized that he could not be fully open with Titan. They were friends, yes, but the Negaverse was still on the hunt for their lost general and he didn't want to be the one to give her up. "New-ish," he said, waggling a hand. "Since late July. I haven't seen you since then."

He hadn't really seen any Negaversers since then, save, say, Melanite, and that was its own weirdness entirely. There had been... that time on Avalon, but that had just been strange more than anything - and not worth mentioning to someone not already in the loop.

So, the dreams, despite the weariness they brought to Titan's face, were as good a change of subject as any. At least the captain had had them - it gave him a jumping off point for this. They could form... a hypothesis, about his likely alignment, and then they could test it. "I had one long one," he said, "That felt like five years in one night. And since then, I've had others. Moments I'd already seen but more in-depth."

He shrugged. "I keep remembering this kid I don't have? It's very weird. But anyway, I'm about to get really Wizard of Oz on you, but you were there, in my dreams?" Which sounded like more of a come-on than it was meant to, honestly, since it wasn't meant to sound like one at all.

He held up the alethiometer again, demonstratively. "I only ask because I think it might help us either figure out how accurate this thing is, or else how true the dreams are. Maybe both. In that future, I knew you as a knight of Earth."

Babylon was as rare a treat in those dreams- a far off man as might as well be a country. He was like Kairatos, full come to glory. What ever have I had to offer such knights. Even that man born of me had little to nothing, no more of worth than his hands and hopes. Babylon had his own of that. Do I remember a lady? Did I see a child in those visions? It was hard to figure against the other children trundled about the camp. Nærøyfjord had enjoyed, on rare days off of rotation, asking the parents of the camps to watch their children for the day. He'd had none of his own, and none from Lord or Lady to dote on, whatever the private hopes that ran waters of thoughts on Themiscyra's and Hvergelmir's private times spent with Kairatos. Would it be with this girlfriend unknown that Babylon would find time for such trials?

Titan pushed the wants of hearth-full and lively at service to lords in long houses aside. For all it matters, I am a knight of the Earth now. The carvings on the lower reaches are clear. The symbols of the Rift are those of the Earth itself. We serve the Throne of Earth, and She who sits it. "I know what you mean, in the way of the visions. I have seen him, and his livery in reflections of the buildings he passed on missions. How it differs from my own. It was the Earth's symbol he wore."

"How does it work? Do ...I need to do something to let it read me?"

Babylon gave Titan an odd look - perhaps it was meant to say I only half-understood what you just said, but I'm going to go with it? Or something of the sort. "Anyway," he said, clearing his throat, "No, it's fairly straightforward? Or it should be. This is my first field test with an actual Negaverse officer. It works fine on knights?"

Well, it worked on himself and Mistral. Which was a start.

Babylon flipped the top on the alethiometer open and adjusted the dials inside, turning the case so that the arrow pointed towards Titan.

And nothing happened. The disk failed to orient itself, just wobbled feebly on its axis, pointing somewhere between Uranus and Neptune.

"Um," said Babylon. "One second. Technical difficulties."

He held the alethiometer up to his face and squinted at it. The dial was supposed to glow - and it wasn't. "Power's out," he said, frowning. He looked over at Titan. "How would you feel about going to my Wonder? I might have skipped a really important step in calibrating this thing."

He waited. Watched the little thing with initial interest that waned to uncertainty. Confusion came next, which left him glad that Babylon had a quick answer in the same meeting and moment for a work around. It even sounded a lot more reasonable of a fix than 'put your shirt over it and blow into it' or 'shake it around a little'.

"I would be honored, " Titan accompanied the words with an incline-like bow of his head. "I have been to some worlds. I would like to see your lands, even if its only short. "

Babylon's smile came back to his face and he thought, I hope that this works. Because if he dragged Titan all the way to Mercury and then couldn't get the alethiometer working, then what kind of knight was he? Not one that was true to his word, that was for sure. "Well then," he said, jovially stepping forward to link arms with Titan. "Away we go."
