“I will say this for them” Elane said thoughtfully, nibbling on the skewer of fish she had purchased from a not-too-dubious food stall, “they do know how to cook. I mean, it's the only thing they know how to cook, but they do know how”
The pair of them had come out to Tillek for a Gather - Elane intended to spend her stipend from the Weyr on another attempt to upgrade her wardrobe a little, and on… well, having a good time. She’d finally been taken into a wing, albeit the lowest one (which she was fine with, for now - Pellinorth wanted to be somewhere higher, but his desire ebbed and flowed as he remembered about it), which meant about thirty marks a month to walk around with. Not much, but… well, she’d been used to making do and mending once, she’d learned it again. Mostly she meant to top up on cosmetics - things she couldn’t make herself, but had to purchase.
Besides, she felt that Nersha could do with some cheering up, and what was more cheering then looking at things neither of them could afford?

"It's certainly impressive," Nersha replied, looking at her own skewer. Food on skewers had never been her forté and it took a great deal of effort for the woman not to loose the foodstuff by taking too much from one side.
Taking another bite Nersha chewed a while and had a look about her. There was a pleasant vibe to the gathering of people and she was definitely enjoying herself. This however may have been because in the crowded Gather, Nersha was just a face among many. She'd opted not to wear her rider knots, nor anything else that showed any kind of affiliation. Today she wanted to be able to walk around head held high without a look or some hushed word being said when she went past.
"So, what would you like to peruse first?"

“I would like a new wimple” Elane said thoughtfully, taking another bite of the skewer of fish. “Perhaps the printed fabric? I’m given to understand that Tillek isn’t exceptionally fine for it, but…”
She missed the days when she could just go ‘oh, I desire that -‘ and someone would buy it for her. She certainly couldn’t afford silk anymore.

"Sounds like a wonderful plan." Nersha wasn't really looking for something herself. She was treating her wardrobe in a very, get it when required fashion. Now that the purse strings had been tightened she had chosen a very practical way of dealing with it. That wasn't to say she hadn't brought a few marks along in case something caught her eye, but that was different.
Twizzling her skewer gently Nersha glanced about. "Where do you suppose we start looking for that?" That was the downside of gathers, often no kind of organisation.

“I…” she paused, considered, shrugged (it occurred to her that perhaps she should work on cultivating a few lovers in the higher wings). “Have no idea” This was accompanied by a grin, because - well, why worry? They had all the time in the world. No-one was going to come looking for them (she hoped), there was no incipient crisis or politics or - well, anything!
“Why don’t we just pick a direction and start walking?” she said cheerfully, seizing Nersha’s free hand and tugging her in direction picked entirely at random. Perhaps she would get something nice for Pellinorth, rather then herself, if she saw a good smithcrafter’s stall.

"Woa-okay then." Good thing she'd finished that skewer as Nersha was swiftly tugged off. Any direction worked too. Following after the younger woman she couldn't help smiling, Elane just seemed so cheerful it was contagious. She let herself get far too bogged down with everything lately. It was about time they got to actually have a little fun. Although if she knew anything about Elane, she'd probably been having her own fun long before today.
She looked around in case there was anything interesting, keeping a eye out for what Elane wanted as well.
"Woah, look at that!" Stopping dead in her tracks Nersha pointed at a stall and swiftly adjusted her path. Gravitating toward a jewellery stall. The stall had an impressive range, but by far the most impressive piece was a necklace placed on display behind the merchant, clearly too valuable to be put with the other pieces at the front.

“That” Elane said, turning on a knife-point to follow Nersha’s gaze - and then to go after her - “is fabulous” Nobody seemed to wear so many necklaces nowadays, which was a trend she disliked. It was a double row of silver and coral beads, with an amethyst pendant encircled and held by a little silver firelizard, and she could see it about Nersha’s neck very easily.
“Oh, you must try it on!” she said, clapping her hands together with glee. “It’s lovely"

"Oh, I couldn't possibly." Even with all the marks she'd stashed since arriving she couldn't afford it. Once upon a time she could have and probably would have been tempted to. It was rare to see such a fine piece just up for sale at a gather. Elane was right, it was fabulous, the kind someone would commission. It seemed like a risk for it just to be here.
"Why don't you try it?" Elane wouldn't be able to afford it either, but she seemed very fond of that type of thing. Certainly more instinctive about it than Nersha was. She'd been trained to know what to wear to what occasion with what, Elane just seemed to naturally know.

“Oh, no -“ Elane said, a little glumly, remembering the pathetic clink when she’d dropped her salary into her belt-pouch. “There’s no point looking at what I can’t have. I shall have to make do without”
Perhaps she could get someone to make her something similar. Attention was a coin it was easy to pay in, whatever form that attention took - a lot of men (and women) simply liked being flattered and listened to.
“Maybe something more simple…?” Just a string of beads?

Mouth twisting to the side a little Nersha stayed quiet. 'make do without' that seemed an increasingly common phrase lately. True, they really had no reason to complain, afterall a rider had it far better than most on Pern, there was no denying that. Still it was a harsh pill to swallow slipping down the ladder this way. The lifestyle changes popping up to remind here and there long after accepting the change in rank.
"Sometimes simplicity is elegance." Some of the best looking dragons she'd ever seen were simply patterned. From a distance the rather well patterned Sereth rumbled her displeasure only to be soothed with the reminder that Nersha said some of the best looking. Naturally Sereth was the most beautiful she'd ever seen.

“We’ll be rich again someday” Elane said defiantly - though she’d never really been rich herself, per se, and what she’d been given… well, dragonriders couldn’t Hold land, at least not in their own names. What did she have now? What she’d always had - herself, and better, Pellinorth. “Then we can have all the ostentation we want” She had a habit of cutting to the heart of things like that, because... why dance around it?
She would have lace and silk again, and cloth of gold and velvet, and people to love her.
