Yuki was... Well, Yuki was nervous and awkwardly standing in front of the address Kip had texted her. She was dressed in a pair of pants, a warm sweater, coat, and just a pair of boots she threw on because she didn't know if she'd be keeping them on or even how to dress to spend an evening at someone's house cooking. She'd pinned part of her hair up but for the majority, the black/blue strands hung free and she brought a hand from her pocket and just fussed with them. It was snowing out, her nose red and cheeks rosy from the cold and the wind. All this fidgeting, and she still didn't know if she was going to knock. Her stomach clenched a bit. "Just go for it," she chided herself. Finally, she knocked on the door and stepped back, swallowing a little. God, she hoped she didn't mess tonight up.

Moving easily through the kitchen, Kekipi double checked on the food he had, making a little list of things that he could cook. He wanted something that showed off his skill, but nothing that came across as pretentious.
Briefly, he wondered if all such dinner dates were like this. Oh well, if nothing else, at least he knew Yuki was a veritable queen of ordering out.
A quick glance at the clock showed he had just barely enough time to shower before she was due to arrive and he stripped quickly, hopping in and soaping up. By the time he was out and mostly dry (and clothed), he heard the knock at the door and grinned.
"Coming!"
Still toweling his dreds, he raced for the door and quickly opened it. Beaming down at his guest, he gave Yuki a tiny bow and stepped aside so she could come in.
"Hey Yuki! Welcome to Chez Dude. You look great. Feel free to drop your stuff wherever. Stereo's over there and you can root through my CD collection and pick something out if you want. Or if music doesn't interest you, I have some koi that could use feeding if you wouldn't mind helping me out with that?"

The door open and it took a moment for her to register he was toweling his hair dry.. dreads. She hadn't been aware you could even wash dreads. Shaking her her head a bit, Yuki just gave him a soft smile and wandered in when he stepped aside. "Chez Dude? Interesting choice of name, but..." He was a bachelor, after all. With a soft laugh she wandered towards the CD collection, thumbing through it as she read them. "I like music... But koi?" she looked up, not even realizing he had fish. She loved koi because they were so pretty and easy to take care of. With a soft smile she looked over at him and then put her hands together. "I would love to feed the fish!" That sounded unusually chipper. Coughing a little to cover it up, she moved around to his fish tank. "Then... I could put on music?"

Reasonably sure that he wouldn't be dripping water all over the place now, Kekipi tossed the towel into the bathroom hamper and grinned at Yuki's reaction to his keeping koi.
"Koi," he nodded in agreement. "I don't keep too many hobbies, but my fishpond is one that I regularly indulge myself in. It's just out back. C'mon, I'll show you."
Waving his hand to beckon her along, Haumea headed for the sliding glass door that led out into his backyard. Neatly tucked into the center of the small space was an old tree with a man-mad pond underneath. Inside, a handful of koi swam gracefully.
"I have to be super careful when the weather gets cold, but we manage all right, don't we, fellas," he turned to address the fish. Pointing to a neatly hidden box, he grinned a little. "Their food's in that and don't worry about overfeeding 'em."
Watching his prized fish, Kekipi couldn't help but feel a tiny gleam of pride. They weren't the biggest koi around, but they were certainly the prettiest in his opinion.

Yuki followed him out the back, looking around as she did. She had to see his whole place, after all. Obviously the girl was curious about a lot of things. When the glass door slid open and her eyes spotted the pond, she moved forward to peek into them and laughed as she saw a few of them swimming around. She heard the word food and looked up, blinking lightly before nodding. "Here?" She padded over and pointed again to the box just to be sure and then grabbed a small amount of flakes before sprinkling it over the water and crouching down. She only smiled wider as they came up and snatched the food up before swimming back down, splashing the surface as they did. "They're so pretty.. You'll have to expand the pond if you want them bigger." Koi and goldfish, as far as she knew, grew to their tanks size, but it was always best to move them to larger tanks. And she just realized it sounded like she had been lecturing the man. Smacking herself in the forehead she turned to look at him and let her brows knit. "Sorry. I.. mean. They are beautiful. You're doing such a good job with them!" Not awkward at all.

Trailing along behind, more to make sure that she found everything without any problems, Kekipi smiled as she found the fish food and sprinkled some into the pond.
"Thanks. I do my best to keep 'em happy and healthy. And they'll get a bigger pond someday. Just gotta figure out how to do it without losing the whole of my backyard to them."
Nose crinkling as he smiled and shrugged, indicating just how very small his yard was, Kekipi manfully managed to not laugh out loud as she facepalmed.
"Hey, it's no worries, right? And I enjoy meeting people who share my interests. Which it seems you do in this case, so relax."
He couldn't help it anymore. He had to laugh a little.
"It really is okay."

Yuki just gave a little noise and nodded, brows knitting a little more. Relaxing wasn't something she had a lot of time doing. But she'd try. The smile on her face just became a little more sincere before her shoulders dropped and she stood with her hands behind her back. "Okay." Yes, her cheeks were still flushed and flustered, but she managed to give a little laugh before turning back to walk closer to him. "...So. What should we be doing as far as food goes?"

Nodding in approval as Yuki relaxed, Kekipi smiled and motioned back to the house.
"Well, this is where we have a choice. Come take a look at what I've got and we can figure out what to cook from there. I didn't want to assume just in case there was anything you might be allergic to, y'know?"
Turning, he went back inside and into the kitchen. From a layman's point of view, he supposed that the sheer variety would look pretentious. But he liked to be prepared. Besides, some variety was nice.
"I think, depending on what you're in the mood for, I can whomp up just about anything," he said.

She thought about food allergies and frowned a bit. "..Nothing I can think of, but I'm not fond of natto? Not that I think you'd eat it, but.." She waved her hand to show it was more of an afterthought. "So. I will basically try anything if it's put in front of me." She was horribly picky. As long as it tasted good and looked appetizing enough... Yuki wouldn't be considered an adventurous eater. It didn't stop her from trying. She rubbed a hand over her arm as she continued to think and then shifted to settle against a counter in the kitchen. "I do happen to enjoy most kinds of fish I've had." What was being helpful?

Kekipi gave a dramatic shudder before chuckling, "Is anyone actually fond of natto? Awful stuff."
He watched her movements and wondered if he'd managed to somehow make her uncomfortable. Certainly he hadn't meant to. Best, he decided, to act normally and not draw attention to it. Yuki struck him as very self-contained and she probably wouldn't appreciate him gawking.
"We can do fish! How d'you feel about fried fish? Got a recipe I been dying to try out."
Feel more in his element, Kekipi grinned and began racing about the kitchen, pulling some halibut from the fridge before ransacking it for salad fixings and tiny mandarin oranges. Next came a small tub of what, when opened, looked like wallpaper paste.
"Poi," he explained, pointing to it. "I love the stuff, but I have to make my own and I can't do it very often since it's a little hard to get taro out here. Do me a favor and peel, then section the oranges?"
As he spoke, he was scooping poi into a mixing bowl and adding a bit of sweet rice flour, and paprika before snatching some garlic and mincing it then tossing that in as well. Then, he set the mixer to slow and began carefully pouring water in until the poi had been reduced to a thin batter.
"That'll do. I gotta get some oil in the pan and get that heated before I can start frying. And since I don't want to kill us both by just serving fried food, let's make a salad, yeah?"
He was clearly in his element, smiling cheerfully as he bustled about.

"Well, actually, I believe I've seen people enjoy it and ask for it specifically." Her nose wrinkled up again and then she rubbed it before looking over at him again. Yuki gave a little smile and then hummed lightly and then shifted to look at the fish, squinting. "I like fried fish. Just... not too greasy?" Was that a thing he could do? She supposed if it got strained enough it'd be fine. Her hands moved to his hair as he dusted the fish with flour, just toying with it idly without really thinking about it. It was pretty. Kind of familiar, but just so long and a beautiful color. When he got really going, though, Yuki side stepped and let him do his thing before hopping up on a counter to watch. "Salad would be good, yeah. Do you need me to help with that? I feel... like I should be doing something, at least."

"I've never served up greasy food in my life," Kekipi said with a wink and grin. And then she touched his hair and he froze like a deer in headlights for half a heartbeat. She moved off soon after and he forced himself to continue working.
Grinning slightly as he watched her hop up on the counter, he shook his head as he set another piece of dredged fish on a platter. He'd dip them all in the poi once he had the batter worked up.
"Salad stuff is in the fridge, feel free to go crazy. I've got fresh mandarins in there too if you'd be good enough to peel and section those as well."
Once the last bit of fish had a light dusting of flour on it, he opened a low cabinet and took out a large, shallow bowl and began scooping poi into it. It was time to thin the stuff out and turn it into tasty fish batter.

"Well, then good." Yuki noticed how he froze, so she would just not touch his hair again. Simple as that. But he continued working and then grinned a bit more. With permission to go crazy on the salad, she helped herself to the fridge and took out various ingredients for it. "Mmm. Mandarins in salad. I'm looking forward to this." She grabbed a couple of those two and brought everything to another cabinet to start this, along with a bowl for mixing. "So. Do you cook with all your dates or am I just that special?"

Doing his best to hide his distress at her innocent enough question, Kekipi tried to deflect it. He couldn't remember if he'd ever been on dates before or not. Yuki was the only person he could remember doing anything date-like with.
"I never had much time for dating before. Too busy learning and then working. Am I going overboard? I'm going overboard, aren't I," he did his best to make it a joke. Some kind of typical insecure guy thing.
"Honestly, I just enjoy cooking, so finding someone willing to let me if kind of nice, you know?"

Ah, she felt the air change, and just hummed a little, trying to keep the atmosphere relaxed. "...No, no. I.. haven't dated before, either," she admitted, with a shrug. She got to work on the salads easily enough, hands moving a little awkwardly. Yuki stopped and looked him over a bit before looking up at him with a little smile. "I'm enjoying myself, so.." She let out a little nervous laugh. Okay, trying to relax, now. She worked a bit in silence, finishing off the salad and puffed up like a little, proud bird. "All done!"
