Stigtyr sighed as he trotted along, not really looking at anything. This was one of the quieter areas of the pride, where the reavers didn't really venture towards. Here, apart from the occasional giggling of cubs and the distant sounds of the ocean, Stigtyr could be alone with his thoughts, as he usually was as of late. The scars on his face pulled as he frowned, reminding the male of why he was moping. A couple weeks ago, slowly creeping on a few months, his brother Tollak had delivered quite the blow to his face during a scuffle. Alright, it had been worse than a scuffle. It had been a full blown fight. And in the heat of it, Stigtyr had gotten slashed in the face, damaging one of his eyes. The vision in that eye was completely gone. Now he could only see lights and shadows and the occasional bright colour with blurs of movement.
Since then, Stigtyr had been avoiding everyone else like a plague. He hadn't been back to his family den since, hadn't seen his sister or mother, certainly not his brother, and had done little else than travel to different places to sulk. The male simply had no motivation for anything anymore. He definitely would never be a reaver, not with his eye like this. Of course, Stigtyr had never really wanted to be a reaver, but he'd always liked to think that the option was open to him. But he had been a terrible fighter before the incident, and with his eye messed up, there would be no way Stigtyr could fight at all.
The male's scowl deepened. There was no use for him anymore. There was nothing he could do, nothing he could amount to. Perhaps he should just leave the pride and become a rogue. At least then he would no longer be a burden on his pride.

Mbali was lounging under her usual tree. The cream colored lioness liked this location because it was out of the way it was still around enough activity that she was able to hear cubs running around and playing. The sound of cubs playing was one of her favourites. It was so happy and fun, opposed to the sound of the occasional fight she could hear happening between pride members.

Today it felt like the sun was trying to peek through the clouds a rare occasion here in the pride. Here it was almost always cloudy, raining and dreary. Mbali smiled at the thought of being able to sun bathe for just a little while, enjoying the warmth building on her fur.

Sorry for the late tag. My computer went kaput on me.

Stigtyr turned to look on his blind side, making sure no one was trying to sneak up on him or anything. He'd become quite paranoid as of late. The young male had run into one too many Reavers thanks to his reduced vision, and he was just waiting for one of them to jump out and tackle him. A silly notion, really, but Stigtyr had been feeling like that as of late, not at all like his usual self.
But the male stared too long in that direction, and suddenly he found himself tripping and stumbling over another lion. His paranoia kicking in, Stigtyr let out a mighty snarl at the lion he'd stepped over, claws out and ready to slash if need be. One bad eye or not, the young male was not going to be maimed by any more reavers.

The impact shook through Mbali, she had heard the other lion approaching but she hadn't paid much attention to him, she had been too busy listening to the cubs playing near by. It had sounded like they were duelling the way young stormborn's often did.

"Ouch" she muttered as she got back up to her feet. It had hurt when the other lion had hurt when he collided with her. What was more concerning was the noises coming form the lion now he was now growling at her.

"You know you ran into me, why are you growling now?" Mbali said her voice small and feminine. One would think that she would be angry having had him ran into her but really she had run into enough other lions, that she understood it happened.

"Mind introducing yourself instead of growling... I can't see you to know who you are you know." She said a hint of sarcasm in her voice.

The large male's ears burned with embarrassment. It wasn't a reaver at all. It was small female lioness, not a bulky male who tried to trip him up on purpose. No, it had been Stigtyr's fault. He hadn't been looking where he was going, namely because he hadn't been able to see anything, but still he had been at fault and had acted like this lioness was. First snapping at one of his few friends and now growling for no reason at a stranger? Stigtyr truly was a bit of a mess.
"Apologies, ma'am. I hadn't...I didn't...I thought you were someone else." Stigtyr had been raised with manners. He left out the part of how he'd been ready to attack if she had turned out to be his brother or one of his brother's friends. Ignorance was bliss, as they said. I couldn't see you...either...." He trailed off, trying to compute the lioness's words. He lifted a paw and waved it front of her face. "You're blind!" He said in shock, manners forgotten. He'd never met another lion that was blind like him, let alone one who was completely blind altogether.

Haha. Lol. Tis the season! I'd have much preferred mine to crap out a wee bit closer to Black Friday though, lol.

Mbali smiled, it wasn't uncommon for her to have people announce that she was blind, though admittedly it was usually youngens that announced it in such a way. She blinked a few times, still smiling.

"Yes I am blind." she told him, she wasn't ashamed of what she was. Sure life in a pride that was so focused on physical prowess it was difficult to have a limitation like hers but at the same time the Stormborns was the only place she had ever known.

"Wait you couldn't see me.... so are you blind, or have I become invisible?" she asked with a chuckle. Some days she did feel invisible sitting under her tree it was rare for anyone to ever give her a second glance much less come and talk to her.

Kaliforneum
no kidding! Thankfully it was a pretty easy fix on mine, just $40 at the apple store and I was good to go. Some connector broke or something inside.

Stigtyr sat down, a puff of dust rising up around him as he did so. This female was so cheerful for someone who was blind. And who had just been run in to rather rudely. It threw Stigtyr off a little bit. But just a little.
The male quickly regained his composure, had his manners. "I'm blind as well, but only in one eye. I was looking the other way and I couldn't see you." Stigtyr replied, narrowing his eyes as he assessed the female. She certainly wasn't a reaver, so perhaps she had been born blind? Stigtyr didn't know whether it was rude to ask. Many of the reavers loved talking about their injuries, showing off scars and battle wounds with pride, but this was no reaver. And not all lions enjoyed talking about their ailments. Stigtyr certainly didn't.
"My name is Stigtyr, ma'am. Again, terribly sorry for running in to you."

Yeah, mine was not that lucky. He went up to computer heaven, I'm afraid. Poor guy.

"Stigtyr its a pleasure. My name is Mbali." the tan lioness told the male. She had already gotten over the fact that he had rammed into her and then proceeded to growl away. Wasn't really worth being that upset over in the grand scheme of things.

"Blind in just one eye eh, must have been an injury." Mbali said mostly to herself as she thought how one would wind up blind in just one eye. "Must suck it was an injury, have to learn to compensate. Not like me, I have been blind, totally and utterly my whole life, so its not like I know what I am missing." Mbali told him with a smile. Her blindness had been a sore spot when she was younger and the cubs that should have been her playmates tortured her instead. It was always a question, why was she blind while her twin sister wasn't.

"Its a hard pride to be disadvantaged in Stigtyr but if you learn how to compensate then you can get by just fine. And if yours truly was caused by an injury, in a fight I assume. Then its a battle scar not a disadvantage. You just have to learn how to spin it." she told him. She could tell when the male spoke that it was a sore spot but she hoped that she could help him feel a bit better about it.

Stigtyr looked away from Mbali, ashamed, even though the female could not see him do so. How could she be so...so...composed about the whole thing? She couldn't see! Stigtyr couldn't see! They weren't just disadvantaged! They were...they were...cripples! And cripples had no place amongst the Stormborn. Perhaps Tollak was right. Perhaps he would be better off as a thrall.
"It was an injury from a fight, yes." Stigtyr sighed, the memory still painful. "My brother, he...he attacked me. I lost, badly. And lost my vision in my eye. It was his fault! And he didn't even care." They had never gotten along well, he and Tollak. But Stigtyr had always assumed that Tollak would never go so far as to truly attack him and injure him, especially when Tollak knew that Stigtyr wasn't much of a fighter. But Stigtyr had been wrong, and now he was without sight and without direction.
"It's not a battle scar if I lost! How do you just compensate for something like this? I'm no use to my pride! I'll never be able to amount to anything now." Stigtyr snapped. He hadn't meant to. The grey male never snapped. But this...he'd been bottling it up for so long that was refusing to stay locked up inside his mind, demanding to be dealt with.
Stigtyr had never wanted to be a reaver, never wanted that life. Being a freeborn wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but a blind male freeborn? It was sad. There weren't any options open to him, nothing for him to do.

Mbali didn't flinch when the male snapped, in the Stormborns it wasn't uncommon for their to be shouting of some sort. "A battle scar occurs whether you win or loose. Sure if you win you may be more proud of the scar, but even if you loose you still fought back.... next time you will just have to be better." She refused to have sympathy for the half blind male.

"There is more to this pride to being able to fight. Sure the most heroic role is a Reaver, but lets face it this pride could not operate if we were all Reavers, if we all went out on pilgrimages. There needs to be someone back here, there needs to be strong someones back here. Sure us "weak" females can run the Thralls, but what if their was an attack on the pride, we need some males back here. Let's face it there are even some more strong willed Thralls that need strong hands too. There is plenty to be done here, plenty to be useful towards. You are only crippled and useless if you make yourself that way. Buck up."

Mbali had gotten more passionate then she had originally meant to. She shook her head at the male. She had nothing more to say to him, she rose to her feet, not greatly confident that she couldn't walk away without tripping and falling, but she felt a need to make a sweeping exit.

She looked back over her shoulder in the direction she was pretty sure the male was still standing, "When you stop feeling sorry for yourself you know where to find me." she told him and marched off.

The male sat there, frozen in shock, mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for breath on the beach. He hadn't been snapped at like that since...since the last time he'd talked to his sister to be quite honest.
He didn't quite know how to react. Everyone close to him and been respectful of him, let him keep his distance and mope. And now this strange lioness, who Stigtyr had just met, was reprimanding him like he was a cub! The grey male was an adult now, full mane and all. He was not some whiny brat to be scolded!
Or was he? He had been acting rather...out of sorts lately. He'd been snapping at pretty much everyone, spent his days moaning about how he would never be able to do anything again. And yet here was this lioness, completely blind, who had completely shamed him for how he had been acting. If she could be so confident, so sure of herself when she had no sight at all, what right did Stigtyr have to feel sorry for himself? The female was right. He was choosing to be useless, choosing to wallow in his own grief instead of looking for a way to solve the problem. And that's what Stigtyr was good at, right? Solving problems. He didn't need worry about fighting, because that's not what he did. He used his smarts. Had his mind been so clouded with pain and pity that he had forgotten his strengths and focused on his weaknesses? Stigtyr had let Tollak tear him down, and staying like this would only prove his brother right. And there was no way Stigtyr was going to let Tollak win.
"Mbali! Wait!" He dashed after her, much faster than the female. He stopped beside her, careful not to get in her way to trip her. "You're right. I'm sorry. I...didn't realize how rude that was." It was like complaining about a sore toe to a reaver with a broken leg. "I just...thank you. Please, let me know if there's anything I can ever do for you. I need to go find someone. Again, thank you!" The male dashed off. He needed to find Skada, the lawspeaker. Stigtyr knew exactly what he had to do.

Mbali smiled and watched the grey male go. She was surprised that he had turned his ways around so quickly. She should be a motivational speaker she decided. She went back to her tree and took a seat. Listening again to the cubs play around her she decided that her and Stigtyr would be good friends. He just needed a good push and now that she had given that to him she was sure he was going to be just fine.
