Iolite gave the stallion a polite smile, blinking as she mulled her words over. She’d already pondered the matter thoroughly, but her shy nature had her second-guessing herself even as she had already started the conversation. It was with some trepidation that she had approached the mer, knowing him to be one of the more successful members of the Grail herd. While he might be incredibly useful, no doubt he would know every way to try and tilt her proposition to his advantage. He had quite the treasure horde, and with it came a certain reputation, one that Iolite was very familiar with.
Just recently the seathi had found a yet unplundered ship wreck, and the thought of getting to raid it first had filled her with excitement. She herself wasn’t interested in the treasures though, even if they were beautiful. No, Iolite had never had much of an interest in amassing herself a giant horde of gold, unlike most of those in her herd. Certainly she had gone through their coming of age ceremony, and wore her stolen earring with pride, but her heart lay entirely with the process of making treasures rather than acquiring them.
She, with the help of her pawed friends the sea otters, had become quite adept at crafting new trinkets. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, random décor. You name it and she could learn to be able to craft it. Not only did she fashion new treasures completely from scratch, she was also quite good at repairing broken artefacts for others. A broken clasp? Cracked stone? Bend chain? All could be repaired, given time and the right touch. As such, she had established her presence in the herd. Not as a corsair, but as a craftsperson. Trading her abilities for their currency.
”Caius,” she began, choosing her words with care. ”I have a bit of a proposition for you, actually.” Her eye looked around her warily, keeping a watch out for any eavesdroppers. She wouldn’t put it past anyone to try and steal her loot. ”I have found a… er… a new shipwreck, one that hasn’t been plundered before.” He opened his mouth to speak, but Iolite raised a hoof to stop him. ”No, I won’t tell you where it is. Not unless you agree to a certain trade of mine. You see, I have a twofold problem. First, I am but a small seathi. I can only carry so much. I will need help to transport the things I want back. And secondly, I have heard rumours of an aggressive group of kelpi in the area. Now, chances are they won’t do anything, but I’m only a small seathi. And that makes me just about bite-size for them.” She cleared her throat, peeking into his eyes. ”I will make you a trade, you protect me and help me carry back a bit of what I want, and in exchange the rest of the shipwreck is all yours.”

Caius watched the seathi closely, a broad smirk spread across his face. Though he wasn’t all that old, he was an established corsair of the herd and had managed to wrangle up quite the treasure horde. But this little one was mostly unfamiliar to him. Of course, he’d seen her from a distance a few times, they did after all wander through the same lands, but never had he engaged her in conversation. She must have been a new member, she certainly looked very young. And yet here she had come, swimming right up to him with her own agenda on her brain. No doubt if she honed those business skills of hers, she herself would become a legitimate treasure holder.
As she stated her proposition, he found himself listening closer. An unsearched wreck? It had potential. Still, he kept his face fairly neutral, taking care not to show too much interest. The situation had to be played carefully. Too much interest and he’d be lured into her deal, too little and she’d seek someone else. Slipping into his most sultry voice, he opened his mouth to speak. A tiny hoof darted upwards, stopping his words before they even left his throat.
His eyes danced at the challenge, his grin broadening as she ploughed on with her explanation. She wouldn’t tell him where it was, eh? That wasn’t much protection on her part, though it did make it harder. He could always follow her, trailing behind until she revealed its location. As her eyes rose to meet his, her speech finished, he stared right back, intensifying the air between them. Caius was well-known for his ways with women, and those skills could only aid him now. He moved just a hint closer, arcing his neck proudly to show off his mane. His eyes never left hers, never blinked. They just kept boring down into her soul.
”Iolite, is it? Or may I call you Io?” He could feel her getting nervous at the situation. For all of her business-like front, she was clearly inexperienced in these matters. It was all a bluff. ”I fear… well, you see. It’s quite the risk I would take. You have no guarantees about what sort of treasure there could be… For all I know, there is just enough left on that ship for you. Now, I couldn’t possibly agree to such a risky trade without the addition of some more… imminent rewards.” His breath was almost a whisper, eyes alight as he started his bargain.
Of course, her bargain in itself was quite fairly balanced already. Her bartering skills would need sore work if she wanted to profit off this one. And Caius wasn’t ready to give ground, he would freely accompany her to this wreck, the promise of treasure was already too great. But of course, if he could gain a little extra in the exchange, well, he certainly wouldn’t complain about that.
