She had been scared by nothing. This is unacceptable she admonished herself, walking out from behind the door to behold nothing at all – not even a fluffy tail. Just an empty, cleared space, a tree, and a pile of seeds.
She frowned at the seeds and gave them a toppling nudge with her feet. Maybe the Fekarats did not want the seeds, and they wouldn't come out for them. And she did want to see one... when they weren't clawing her to shreds.
Maybe then I can conquer this fear. she glared at the tree, This ridiculous fear.”
She went inside and cut up a few slices of the meat that Mal had smoked the day before. She moved the seeds aside and put it down, carefully.
I wonder if this will work... She knew that Fekarats liked meat, and so this bait, perhaps, would work. She thought she heard a rustle from the tree and tensed.
Nothing. she thought, waiting, Again.
Another rustle. Another sound. A Chirp. She stared at the tree, willing herself to not run as she shook in its shadow.
Nothing... Maybe they're afraid of me?
She began to back away, surprised at the thought. How could she be afraid, and they be afraid at the same time?
It's a ridiculous fear. she asserted, A ridiculous, absurd fear. Still, she did not take her eyes from the tree, waiting for something – anything – to happen.
Nothing.
“This is stupid.” she said out loud, going back to the pile and moving it again, “Everything about this was stupid.”
Her foot had barely touched the bait when a piercing, warning hiss came from the tree. Eyes wide, she backed away, putting a good several feet between her and the bait.
That wasn't nothing she thought, staring at the tree, There was definitely something there. But no matter how hard she stared at it, nothing appeared to her...
