Laesara looked out of the window of the abandoned cabin, wary of the apple tree outside. There was nothing to hint at it being infested with Faekarats – all was quiet and still in the peaceful summer day. Still, she could swear that, if she looked with the corner of her eyes only, she could see glowing, malevolent eyes staring back at her from the tree. She was sure of it. She swallowed nervously, rubbing at the scratches on her arms and face. She remembered, all too well, her encounter with them, and their vicious mobbing of her.
I'm afraid of them... she thought, peering into its branches, searching for any definite sign of movement, I'm afraid of the tree because of them.
I don't want to be afraid of a tree.
Mal had laughed at her enough, and Laesara knew her mother would find her fear hilarious.
I don't want to be laughed at either
So, she knew she had to do something about her fear, something that would stop their laughter, something that would make them proud instead of amused. Or, worse...
Disappointed.
She gave the tree a resolute glare and, grabbing a handful of nuts and seeds, she went outside and put them in a neat little pile where Mal had thrown the fish guts. They had long since been eaten by the Fekarats, and so she knew that if they wanted her seeds, they would definitely eat them from there.
She stood there, for a long moment, daring them to come out... but there was only so long she could tolerate waiting. Fear only stayed away for long. She thought she heard rustling from the tree and she quailed, leaping back from the pile of seeds, her wings extending to give her extra jumping power as she scuttled inside and hid behind the door.
Finally, she peered out cautiously, and she was filled with shame.
Nothing.
