Time was oppressive. With every passing day it weighed on the Prince more heavily, stealing a little more of his joy and peace of mind. There were a couple of reasons for this, not the least of which was the mare in who's company he currently was. He cast his glowing eyes in her direction once more, watching her as she bends to drink from the clear pool beside which they both reclined. It wasn't that she was unattractive - quite the opposite actually. He thought she was graceful and pretty in a different sort of way that some mares. She was well-bred, the daughter of a prominent family, and he had known her his entire life. He trusted the petite mare in most things in life and he was certain she would make an excellent queen beside him.
But she was not the one for him. He knew it in his bones. Their families had arranged their marriage ever since they were young, and so they spent more time together than any of the other foals - by their families' insistence. He knew her well - and he knew she would react poorly to being spurned. He didn't want to hurt her, but he didn't love her. His heart belonged to another, a mare he was forbidden from seeing. It broke his heart every morning when he went to sleep to know she was just across the way, waking and beginning her day.
He shook his head. This was foolishness. He had a duty to his family, to the whole herd. He was the Crown Prince and he had to marry well and produce heirs. He had to rule and to keep the herd united he had to marry Demeira. Anything else was folly.
He sighed heavily in despair.

She bent her neck to drink to give herself some time to think. It was rare that she and the Prince were allowed to be alone together, but it was uncomfortable to say the least. The Prince was miserable; she could see it in his eyes. Was the prospect of marrying her so horrible to him? True, she felt no more affection for him than she would for a friend, but they were betrothed and that was that. Their parents had entered into a marriage pact and that could not be broken except in rare circumstances. Besides, their marriage had nothing to do with love - royals did not have the luxury of such emotions. It was about Duty and keeping the Herd strong. Lunar Mother guide us... she thought. She turned back to the Prince.
"Sin," she started, using the informal address to remind him of their close bond. "I know the day of our marriage draws near, but there's no need to be nervous." She hoped his behavior was simply nerves. "We're friends, we've known each other our entire lives. We're a good match." We're a logical match, she thought. Logical and strong. That's all we need to be.

He could hear the truth in her words but still they rang hollow to him. "You're right," he said, trying to convince himself. "We'll make a good pair." And that could possibly be true. But he couldn't stop his thoughts from drifting to the purple mare with the moonlit eyes. He hadn't seen her in a while and had chanced sneaking around in the shadows on the other side of the river, caching snippets that she had gone. He worried about her. He shook his head and managed a weak smile at the small mare before him. "Meira you are probably the truest friend I have." He meant it too. A prince has few real friends, though most are willing to pretend in order to stay in his favor. "You're probably the only one I can truly trust. I know you appreciate how rare that is." He couldn't help but appreciate Demeira for everything she is. As far as arranged marriages go, he'd say he'd gotten extremely lucky. He tried to let that feeling wash over him, but found he couldn't quite keep it.

She let out a sigh of relief. Maybe she was the one who was nervous, imagining his discomfort the way she was. She gave him a rare smile and fluttered her wings happily. "I know what you mean about being true friends. It's hard for those of us in the High Families. So many are false to our faces just to remain in favor, and are just as quick to betray us or our secrets." How many times had she learned that lesson growing up? Enough times to earn a reputation for being vengeful. Others were far more wary around her now, as she was not one to be crossed. She felt this was a good trait to have, since she would soon be Queen. "If we have foals right away then maybe they will have a chance at a more normal foalhood, since we won't have to take over the rule for a long while yet, don't you think?"

He nearly choked when she mentioned foals. They were barely considered adults themselves! She wants to have kids so soon? He tried to imagine what that would be like, what they might look like. He found that the only foals he could picture had purple fur and moonlight eyes... What was he kidding? He knew he wasn't going to marry Demeira. He thought he was deciding that just now but somehow he knew it'd always been in his heart that he would follow the Sun Herd mare. He couldn't even imagine the consequences that were going to follow. "I can't go through with this, Meira," he said softly, looking her in the eyes. He owed her this at least. "You are my closest friend and I know you would be a good lifemate and Queen, but my heart doesn't belong to you. I know we have our duty... but I just can't do it. I have to find the other mare." He waited for her to cry or scream or attack him. She was entitled to react whatever way she wanted with this news. Undoubtedly this would taint her reputation as well, but he hoped the fact he was running away would create more of a scandal than her being spurned by her fiance.

At first she just stood there, returning his gaze, processing what he'd said. What madness is this? Of course she knew about the other mare, but she thought it just a dalliance. She had even been prepared to look the other way if he'd wanted to keep her as a mistress. After all, their marriage wasn't about love, it was about the Herd, and keeping it together. "You are a fool," she said simply. "You know what you're saying is impossible." He couldn't really think he could just run away from all of this, his family, his rule. "You will marry me as planned. You may keep your blue-eyed mare, what is she to me?"

He was left speechless. Of all of the things he would have expected coming out of her mouth, that was certainly not one of them. "I...I... There is no way I would marry you and keep a mistress." There is no way I could marry you. Why wouldn't she just let him go? He could leave and never return, she could marry his brother and still be queen, if that is what it was. "I'm making a choice here. I'm sorry to hurt you and to cause a scandal, but I feel as though my destiny is to be with her. You may not understand, and that's ok. I just felt you deserved to know in person." He hoped she would stop insisting. He was becoming more uncomfortable by the minute.

Her glowing eyes bored into him resentfully. What was he playing at? She turned away from him and took a few steps away, thinking. How could she make him see the error of this path? They had a duty to perform. True, when she had been told of their betrothal she hadn't been particularly excited, but she had accepted the responsibility without complaint. This was the way of things. Her father arranged this match, and she would NOT disappoint him. "What is your game plan here," she demanded, turning her angry glare back on him. "Is she to be your Queen? Do you really think you could throw me aside and raise up some random mare and the herd will just go alone with it? Are you insane? What do you think is going to happen here?"

Demeira was perhaps the only soquili that could make him feel small, save perhaps his father. He shrunk under her withering gaze, reduced to a stammering foal beneath those fuchsia glowing orbs. He was thrown off by her stubborn clinging to tradition. Didn't she share his contempt for their archaic rules? Hadn't they bonded over that very thing as adolescents? Why was she sticking to the traditions now? He had this horrible feeling as though the ground had shifted and revealed the two of them standing on different sides of a deep fault line. When had their paths diverted? He suddenly felt an outsider, like he truly didn't belong in the herd at all. "I'm leaving," he said softly. He held her gaze, feeling some small amount of pity for the mare.

It was as if he'd slapped her. Leaving?! Was he serious? He was the prince, the one that was supposed to take over. This was not how things were supposed to go. She didn't love Sin. She has known that for a long time. Still, somewhere in the depth of her soul she had perhaps hoped they might fall for each other some day, and when he'd asked to meet her she had thought perhaps he was going to confess his feelings. Instead he was standing before her throwing her away, throwing their entire way of life away. She had a hard time wrapping her head around it and started pacing back and forth, pausing occasionally to give him a hard look. "You can't leave." It was a statement of fact. No one LEFT the herd. Not by choice anyway. What was even out there? "You have a duty to this herd. How selfish can you be?"

He was losing his patience. He had come here to spare her feelings as much as possible, but he was also a prideful stallion and was not used to anyone questioning him or his actions. He growled low in his throat and snorted derisively. "Selfish? Is it selfish to want to cast away the shackles that have bound me since birth? My every waking breath has been devoted to this herd." He began pacing as well, all of the pent up rage and frustration and hopelessness of a lifetime he never knew was lurking in his soul bubbling up to the surface. "I have given EVERYTHING to this herd! Why is it selfish to want to be happy]/i]?!" He whirled on her as if demanding an answer, but he knew she could give him none. She was too much a part of he herd. She was not ready yet to break away, and he pitied her.

She wanted to feel bad for him. Wanted to, but she herself had spent a lifetime as a burden to her father. She was a superfluous daughter with no title or roll in the herd. Her family had some small amount of influence in the herd, but her father was hanging his hopes on the position Demeira would offer him by becoming Queen. Her only purpose in this life was to marry well in order to make her father proud. If Sin left her... she would be blamed. It was likely her father would outcast her from the family, and then what? Live in shame, shunned by the herd? Where was her happiness supposed to be? No, she couldn't allow this. She took a deep breath and turned a level gaze upon him. "Happiness is not in your job description. You have certain responsibilities to this herd, just as I do. There is no room for frivolous endeavors. This is not our way."

There was anger and pain warring within him. Of course she was right, but that didn't help his situation. The thought of living without his precious purple mare... he couldn't stand it. He would rater die. Through his entire life he would have lain down his life for the herd, had followed the path set before him without question. But now in light of the circumstances... it seemed worth it to him to leave forever. He knew it meant he could never return. It opened a chasm in his soul to know it, to leave his family and friends behind forever. He would even miss Demeira, stubborn though she was. He was struck with inspiration. "Come with me!" He sounded desperate, even to himself. "Come start a new life somewhere else! Find your own happiness!"

"You're mad," she half laughed, shaking her head as she stared blankly at him. She couldn't even consider such a ridiculous course. This was their home! How could he expect her to abandon it? She had no idea what was out there beyond their herd property. Besides, she couldn't abandon her duty. She just could't. "Sin... I can't. You know it." She shook her head and looked away from him. They were at an impasse and she knew it. She couldn't convince him to stay; he couldn't convince her to go. "At least sleep on it?" It sounded pathetic to her ears, the last ditch effort of a desperate mare.
