Oliver wanted to go back to his room.

He didn't want to be in the infirmary, he wanted to be in a familiar place, with familiar things around him. But the reality involved several long days of bed rest ahead of him. It involved bandages tying him back together, and an IV happily feeding him fluids, painkillers, and sedatives when necessary. It was mere hours that felt like weeks, spent somewhere between awake and asleep, wondering why he had to be there at all. Something felt off, like he knew why and yet couldn't acknowledge it.

The young Life trainee had not yet been debriefed, but there was an unsettling peace in not knowing the conclusion. They had made it back somehow. He had been assured in many cautious tones that he would be okay, and the sedatives made that easier to believe. Oliver let himself forget the reason behind the aches and pains, and the bandage wrapped around his face that covered the ugly cut spreading from just above his right eyebrow to his left cheekbone. He didn't have to worry about whatever disfigurement it caused, he had never believed himself to be good looking in the first place.

Oliver didn't expect any visitors, nor did he particularly want any. He just wanted to get out of there.

The curtains flew back with a whooshing noise and a very large man stood there with his arms folded across his broad chest, staring down at the patient in the bed with a Very Stern Expression on his face.

"Little Bird," said Arorangi firmly. "What are you doing in here?"

Arorangi's firm words were, unbeknownst to him, being listened to. Not that she had meant to eavesdrop, it was just hard not to when your plotted super dramatic entrance was stolen by a mammoth. She had wanted to throw open the curtains! She hadn't had the chance to yet; everyone else either had their curtains open, or weren't her patient.

It wasn't fair.

After a moment of pouting at that broad back, Harley skipped up beside him, clearing her throat matter-of-factly and putting her shutter shades on so she had something to fidget with smartly.

"Hello Gentlemen~" She started, interrupting Oliver before he even had the chance to answer the concerned mammoth. "My name is Harley, and I will be your Doctor today!" She announced next, bringing her clip board into view as proof. Then she waved at the pair of them, both of them getting their own wave before she tilted her head, hugging the clip board to her chest. "Except I'm not a Doctor, like at all, but I know where all the hands and feet should be! So that's a start, right?" She prattled on, pulling the board out again to scan the papers she was still getting used to seeing and understanding. But she also squirmed her way between Mammoth Man and the patient's bed. Because she was the Doctor, of course. Not because she wanted to be very close to a living beast. No, not at all.

"So...Oliver, right?" She pointed at him, her hands miming a gun. "How's your noggin? On a scale of there to agony?"

"I-I don't know," Oliver replied, offering Arorangi a smile that was confused and a little out of place for the nervous boy. Yet his attempted explanation was was interrupted by a girl (a girl?!) who swept rather dramatically to the bedside wearing a silly pair of glasses. Oliver couldn't tell whether she was being serious or if there was some prank being pulled on him. But she was not someone Oliver recognized, and it wasn't common for new trainees to be left to harass patients in the infirmary.

Despite the sedative-induced nonchalance from earlier, something about having a girl by his bed while he was in such a vulnerable position brought up a helpless embarrassment he didn't quite acknowledge. His natural insecurities might have made it past Arorangi without showing up, but the freckled boy couldn't avoid blushing and turning away from the girl, Harley. He couldn't even pull the blanket up over his head, although his fingers did give it a nervous tug.

"I-I uh, I'm o-okay," he stammered and nodded, looking unusually calm despite the evidence of his nervous emotions. There was a definite disconnection between his conscious and unconscious reactions to the situation at hand. "I'd l-like to go back to my room, I can sleep there, please…"

He shot Aro a brief, pleading glance, silently asking him for help. The large man had gotten him out of the infirmary once before, he could do it again, right?

Oliver couldn't see his chart since Harley was holding it like a Doctor, and couldn't know there were specific instructions recommending against his discharge. He was also unaware of the extra notes on his chart that advised attending staff to watch for agitation and take appropriate action, which was listed in millilitres of sedatives.

Arorangi did not enjoy learning that his friends - most especially Oliver, whom he'd taken under his wing and whom he considered one of his nearest and dearest - was in the hospital wing after having had a very intense mission far away from Deus. He'd been on rotations in the infirmary when he'd noticed the name on the list, so of course he'd had to go and see what had happened.

The patient in question received a narrow-eyed look, but before Arorangi could lecture Oliver on just why he shouldn't be in the room in the first place, they were interrupted by -

- well, really, he had no idea. The girl was given a curious look as Arorangi slowly unfolded his arms; a second later, the curious look gave way to a more enthusiastic one as he thrust out a hand towards her, beaming brightly.

"I am Arorangi, Oliver's best mate," he declared cheerfully. "Do you know what it is that happened to him?"

"You can see okay? I mean for the bandages and whatnot." Harley leaned in close, completely ignoring any personal boundaries he may have had, to investigate his injuries and bruises up close. If he looked away, her small, cold but strangely gentle hand would pull him back. She had a job to do, and he wasn't about to ruin it for her!

"Nope!" Harley announced sternly to Oliver's request to leave. "I am under obligation to keep you here, even if it involves handcuffs - it even says that here in your file!" But she held his file close to her small chest, so nobody could contest her threat. At least she let him go and stood up straight again, this time twisting towards the rather large man that she had to look up to - which was rare, considering she was rather tall herself.

"Well hello 'best mate'!" Harley slapped her dainty hand (in comparison, certainly) into his and shook it with a noted firmness, perhaps a little too firm, if one were being honest. "Err - not specifics, no. Looks like your buddy got himself beat up something good. He'll probably keep the--" She drew an invisible line on her face, where Oliver's facial wound rested.

Even in situations like this, Oliver was cheered by Arorangi's pleasant and enthusiastic nature. Disapproval one second, cheerful introductions the next. "I-I'm okay…" Oliver tried to protest, but it was a weak and timid thing next to the two enthusiastic people hovering over him.

Submitting to the inexperienced examination, the Life trainee did manage to hold Harley's eyes for a second before looking away. "O-oh… I feel okay though… mostly… Wait, handcuffs?"

That was a bit of a lie, everything ached. He preferred not to think about why, and was doing a pretty good job blocking that memory out entirely. It was turning out to be an easy task, all he had to concern himself was the pain itself rather than it's source. The face injury in particular took up it's own fair share of his worries.

"It's gonna scar, right?" Oliver asked, sounding more like a statement than a question. Some of the red returned to his cheeks. Most hunters had scars, but they somehow managed to pull them off as tough and badass. Oliver was certain he would just look pathetic with such a visible wound, like a starved dog, or a three-legged kitten.

Arorangi decided that this girl - Harley - was all right. She was clearly concerned about Oliver's well-being, which was important, and she clearly was okay with getting close to do just that. Oliver's skittish nature made him seem like a shy puppy half of the time, but at least Harley seemed able to bypass that with relative ease.

A large, tattooed hand clapped onto Oliver's shoulder, Arorangi looking somewhat relieved beneath the worry that was apparent in his expression. "I am very sorry that you are here, in the infirmary," he said.

His face shifted, Arorangi positively towering over his friend, though his smile was quite cheerful.

Mostly.

"You would not be lying to Miss Doctor here, would you, about your pain," Arorangi said smilingly, and reached out to pat Harley's shoulder as well. "She is here to help you, you better tell her the truth, little bird, okay?"

The news that the scar would remain on Oliver's face was making Aro slightly anxious. He eyed the wound and wondered what exactly he was thinking.

"Yes," Harley started seriously, even furrowing her brow to make her look super serious. "Handcuffs." That was totally a thing. Completely. Right? "But seriously at worst they'll just break your legs." The same cheerful voice carried out this very serious (read: not at all serious) threat. "Anywhere else hurting?"

"YEAH! Don't lie to Miss Doctor!" Harley agreed perhaps a little too excitedly, raising her free hand as though being called on in class. Having the Mountain Man backing her up made her feel all sorts of powerful, and she couldn't help the wide, proud grin that was plastered on her face.

"But yeah, it'll probably scar. It looks like it will, but hey, you'll be badass, right? Just like in the movies! You can be all grr, vengeance an' s**t, right?" She mimed a vampire with her words, but hey, it was the thought that counted, right?

"Ow, ow," Oliver winced at the heavy hand landing on his shoulder. "I-I'm okay, really, i-it doesn't, ow, hurt... much..." There, the admission was not exactly a lie. He might have been too honest to call Harley's bluff on the handcuffs and leg-breaking stuff, as a Life division trainee himself he knew breaking limbs was just not something they did. At least, for regular cases like himself. And the handcuffs... well... perhaps he was in danger of restraint if he didn't settle down and accept the infirmary stay.

The truth of his words aside, Oliver was unable to sink too deeply into self-pity with Harley's enthusiasm and Arorangi's looming cheer. The boy cracked a sheepish smile.

"Oh, I could never look badass," he replied, "it's only tough guys in the movies and RPG protagonists that could pull off scars like that." Oliver thought about Finn briefly, and the other man's own scars, but imagining himself with an eyepatch like that was an absurd picture. Thank goodness he wouldn't need an eyepatch.

Arorangi was still looking at Oliver very suspiciously because he knew how you were, Oliver, you can't lie to a six foot one, very heavy and muscular Maori man, okay.

"Just make sure that you are listening to what she says," he told him sternly, leaning back and folding his arms over his chest. "She seems like she has a good head on her shoulders, and she is giving you checkups and if you do not behave, she has handcuffs!"

The last part was said with a certain amount of amusement, the corners of his lips twitching as he tried to hold back a smile.

"You are plenty tough," Arorangi reassured him. "I like this whole grr idea."

Or was she bluffing? That was the real question here.

"Oh Pshaw - Squall and Cloud were both stupid wimpy kids, and they turned out pretty okay." Well mostly. Sort of. Cough. Harley waved her hand in the air, along with the clip board. "I also bet neither of them knew they were protagonists!" She announced next in an epiphany, which begged the idea of maybe they were in a video game too!. That would be kind of cool. She could play Doctor Lady in Ollie's game. Doctor Lady who wields a big axe and has clothing customization options.

"Yes, Doctor Lady has handcuffs!" She threatened again, carrying on her mental train of thought into verbal confirmation to Mountain Man's continued threat-assumption. "So you should listen to me. And your looming friend here! We're both pretty main cast material. Or at least very strong support." She squinted up at Aro, confirming her suspicions.
