Fatal Irony

It was a warm day, despite it being late December, and the sun was shining brightly over the hillside. Abdiel traversed this hillside alone today, for his owl familiar was absent; probably still sleeping.

Abdiel was used to being alone and had been for most of his life. He'd had a few friends here and there, but nothing that felt lasting. He'd even found a herd of his own, a rag-tag bunch that he looked after and protected from things such as hunters, but even to them did he tend to distance himself on his travels. The closest companion he had was that of Dionysus, his familiar. There was something missing, and he felt it strongly on this morning.

He looked at the blanket on his back; a white cloth with bright blue tribal markings. He knew that it resembled his mother, but he couldn't remember much else. He hadn't known his family, being separated from them during a hunters attack early on in life. He'd taken care of himself and survived and he'd become quite confident that he didn't need anyone else. Sure, he liked to meet and help others when he could, but there was a pride about him that came from being independent.

He knew that it was time to look in on his herd, since he was the leader. It was his job to protect and make sure they had what they needed. Besides, a little companionship would be a welcome pleasure today. He gave a thought to Dionysus briefly, but knew that the owl would be able to find him when he awoke. That owl seemed to have a uncanny way of being able to find him, like a homing device of some sort.

Before heading that way, Abdiel lowered his head to graze on the green grass of the hills. He knew a good breakfast was the best thing he could do for himself before starting a journey. As he ate, he felt a peace about him, that things would turn out how they were supposed to. He only had to follow his feet. The spirits were smiling upon him today.

The mare was lost in her thoughts, well above the thin wisp of clouds that lingered in the air. It was much cooler up here and she found it a respite from the constant burning of the ember on her chest. Still, she had been flying quite a while now and she was not so strong a flyer as a pure angeni must be. She wondered what that might be like to fly so much higher. Maybe she could fly high enough to escape her guilt, but she doubted it. There was nowhere she could travel that she wouldn't carry the burden of her mother's death with her. The spirits saw to that when they cursed her with the ever-burning ember she had to wear until she found forgiveness. She wondered if such a thing were even possible. How could she ever make amends for the lives she ruined with that fire? She couldn't forgive herself, much less ask anyone else to forgive her. She felt a heavy weight on her heart, an absence of hope.

So she turned her head earthward and began a lazy, circling descent. She could feel the air grow warmer as she glided downwards, the sun penetrating through the clouds around her. She felt reluctant to touch down to the ground, brought back to reality and the gravity of her task. As she broke below the thin barrier of cloud cover she spotted almost immediately the dark stallion grazing. He stood out starkly in the muted colors of winter. She slowed her descent even more, certain he hadn't yet spotted her. She alighted softly, as quietly as she could. She was near him, but not close enough to force engagement if she didn't want it. She considered him a moment. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had a conversation or allowed herself to speak to another. Deep down she felt she didn't deserve companionship. Yet she could not turn away. She craved companionship as much as her lungs craved air to breathe.

So she moved closer to him, keeping a wary eye on him in case he ended up being hostile. Somehow she doubted it though. He was a unicorn and they were more known for healing and helping, not attacking random strangers on the road. She let her hooves strike the ground a bit louder than normal as she approached, not wishing to surprise him. She stopped a respectful distant away from him and turned her face into an unfamiliar position - a smile. Had it really been so long since she'd last smiled? "I'm sorry to interrupt your meal. I had just dropped in by accident and thought it rude not to say hello. My name is Ember, pleased to meet you." Her voice sounded strange to her. When was the last time she'd spoken aloud?

Fatal Irony

The sound of hooves nearby caused Abdiel to raise his head and look towards the direction of the sound. It was a mare of a fiery orange color and from the looks of it, she had just landed. She approached him with a smile, and Abdiel felt her presence as a welcome warmth. Perhaps that was because she really did bring warmth with her; a burning ember around her neck. Abdiel noticed it right away.

"Not at all, it is no interruption," he replied with a smile of his own. Even with the plans he had formed today, the presence of another was quite welcome. Even if she might just be another one-time acquaintance, Abdiel had no way of knowing, he knew he would much like some companionship today.

"Ember, my name is Abdiel. I am pleased to meet you as well." And he really was. It felt strange, but having someone to talk to made him want to have some sort of adventure. He looked at the ember around her neck. "Is that...actually on fire?" He asked hesitantly. It was a strange token to carry around he thought. And a dangerous one.

She was smiling kindly at him, though her smile seemed not to reach her eyes. She was being polite to smile at him but didn't feel the happiness it suggested. She dropped all pretense of a smile when he drew attention to her necklace. She looked down at it reflexively, taking a step back from him without thinking. "Er... yes..." she said uncertainly. She didn't want to have to relive that day to explain what the ember meant. Her heartbeat sped up at the thought of possibly being asked questions about it - she'd never shared her story with anyone. What a fool she was to think no one would ever ask about her strange, burning necklace. Of course this stallion would be curious, how could he not be? She looked away from him shyly. What might he think of her when he learns her horrible secret? She hadn't anticipated this and for a fleeting moment considered leaving, just flapping her large wings and rising above the clouds once more so this stallion could not find her. She shook her head slightly, clearing it of such foolish thoughts. She was being a coward and she knew it. She took a breath to calm herself, feeling her heartbeat return to normal. She returned her gaze to the stallion. "It's... complicated," she allowed, not offering any more information about where it came from. "It's useful in this cold weather, wouldn't you say?" She attempted a lighthearted air, trying to brush off the subject as inconsequential, as if it were just some trinket she wore and not the burden it truly was.

As she was trying to affect a cool outward appearance inside she was taken back unbidden to that fateful day, The fire had been innocent in the beginning, but she'd lost control. The flames consumed everything, there was smoke everywhere. Her lungs and eyes had burned as she'd searched for her fluttercorn mother. She was so petite and fragile Ember had known there was no way she'd escape the fire. She searched until she'd found her, but it was far too late. She was told much later that there were other causes to the massive conflagration, that her small fire hadn't been but a drop in the ocean of that wildfire that claimed so much. Still, the guilt weighed heavily on her. She tried to chase the thoughts away with something pleasant. "Do you live around here?" She just wanted a change to her thoughts and busied herself with focusing on studying his appearance, the way his pale blue hair cascaded down his elegant, dark shoulders. He was dark as night, but cool as water as well. She found it an interesting combination. "That's a beautiful blanket. Where did you get it?"

Fatal Irony

Abdiel noticed how she had suddenly become nervous and had stepped away from him. It was almost a panicky reaction, like flickering flames drawing away from water. She seemed to recompose herself quickly though and he might have thought nothing of it had it not been for the "complicated" comment. He wondered what it was, and why she had become so nervous about it. He thought it looked painful pressed against her skin; in fact, he could see where it had burned her already, but he said nothing about it. He simply adopted the same lighthearted air that she had developed and chuckled.
"I have felt warmer ever since you came over here. Just be careful not to catch anything on fire." He smiled a playful smile as he said this, as it was only just an off-hand comment to him. Had he known anything about her or her past, he would not have said it, but of course he had only just met her.

"No, I don't live around here," he told her. "I tend to travel around a lot." This made him think of his herd and his plan to check in on them. "I was thinking of heading home today though, it has been awhile since I've visited..." He trailed off, as if he regretted this just a little bit.

He sighed, turning his attention to his blanket. "Oh, this?" He smiled reminiscently. "A friend gave it to me. It's... I think it's supposed to resemble my mother." He hoped that didn't sound too weird. He realized that she had called it beautiful. "Thank you," he said. "I'm actually quite fond of it myself." He looked towards the fire around her neck again and added, "and it helps keep me warm, always a plus." Maybe that was why she wore the ember necklace he thought.

"Do you live around here?" he asked her, repaying a question with a question.

Just be careful not to set anything on fire... The words cut her like a knife but she tried to keep her face from showing it. If only he knew the significance of the ember, knew the punishment she was facing and why. But he didn't so she couldn't fault him for bringing up something painful. She could recognize he was just trying to be friendly. So she returned his smile, if a bit diminished and nodded along to his conversation. As he trailed off her attention was caught. "Why haven't you been home in so long?" If she still had a home she would scarcely leave it! Though as a filly she hadn't felt that way, sneaking off at every opportunity. Just one more regret in her heart.

She couldn't help but find his comment about his blanket. Did he not know what his mother looked like? That would be tragic indeed. She would never forget her mother's face; it was burned into her memory. "I'm glad it keeps you warm; it's getting colder by the day." She tried to affect a casual, friendly air.

At his question she had to pause. Where would she consider her home? Gone, burned away and turned to cinder and smoke. "No I don't live around here, I'm just passing through," she said, deciding it on the spot. She didn't want to scare away the stallion she had just met.

Fatal Irony

Abdiel was a bit surprised by the way she had asked him why he hadn't been home. He could tell that this grabbed at her attention, and for a second he was reminded of Rahnya, scolding him for "leaving his herd."

He chuckled and tried to assure her, "I just like to travel, and my herd gets on okay without me. I guess I just haven't found a place I really belong yet," he admitted. "The herd, well, we're really just a random bunch. Everyone kind of does their own thing. I am the leader though," he added impressively.

Maybe one day, he thought, he'd settle down and actually lead, but he didn't know when that would be. He hadn't found what he was looking for. He didn't even know what he was looking for.

He was curious to know where she was headed, perhaps on her way home herself considering how she had asked about his. "Well, where are you headed?" he asked her. "Perhaps we can travel together if our paths are headed in the same direction. I'm headed East, past the River." He suddenly hoped she was headed the same way, for it would be an awkward way to part if they were headed in different directions.

She found the stallion more curious as the moments passed. Was he trying to impress her? Maybe he'd feel differently if he knew her secret. She tried to keep her expression friendly, tried to keep the darkness from creeping into her eyes. She cocked her head to the side and asked "But how can you be a leader if you are absent?" She couldn't imagine how that worked. If he stayed away too long he'd lose whatever authority he had. The group would eventually learn to get along without him entirely and he'd have no place.

Or maybe she was just speculating. She didn't know this bunch. Maybe they would welcome him back whenever he felt like returning and would step aside for hi to lead and all would be well. Maybe she just had a hard time believing in happy endings.

"I could be heading East," she thought thought. She realized a moment later with some embarrassment that she'd said it out loud. She gave him a sheepish smile. "I don't have anywhere in particular to be, and East is as good a direction as any." She gave a casual shrug.

Abdiel sighed and admitted, "Well, I can't be a very good leader while I'm away. Which is why I'm headed back." He chuckled and said, "I guess I just had to get away and...find myself if that makes sense."

Abdiel took a few steps toward her and tilted his head. She was headed in no particular direction? She must be a wanderer like him.

"Seems I have met a fellow wanderer. You have no herd?" He asked her. He remembered when he didn't have a herd. He wondered what her story was. As he asked her, he began to move eastward. It was good to keep moving in this cold weather.

Sorry I'm a bit slower. Started a new job so I'll be a bit slower

"Finding yourself makes perfect sense. I'm sure they'll be glad to have you back though. Were you at least successful in your quest?"

She shifted uncomfortably as he stepped closer to her. She could feel his curiosity, knew it was only a matter of time until he started asking about her own situation. Sure enough, he inquired after her herd. She gave him a carefully neutral look as she thought of what to say. She never had a herd. It was just her and her mother, searching for her lost father. They had always been nomadic, had wandered place to place in the hopes of finding the angeni that had spawned Ember. That is, until the tragedy.

"No, I never was part of a herd. I consider myself a nomad." She forced what she hoped was a casual smile and started alongside him as he began moving east. She tucked her wings close to herself for warmth.

She was thankful to keep moving. The cold had started to creep into her extremities, everywhere except around the burning ember on her neck.

"So tell me of your herd mates?" She was curious what it must be like to be part of that sort of close-knit group.

No problem :]

Abdiel considered her question for a moment. "I don't know," he admitted. "I guess if anything I've figured out how to accept things as they are."

Walking beside her, he wondered if she ever got lonely living the nomadic lifestyle. He wondered briefly about her family. Perhaps she had none, like himself. He wondered what she wasn't saying behind that smile.

"My herd-mates, well..." he chuckled softly. "We're really just a bunch of misfits I guess. None of us seem to belong anywhere." He sighed, but then smiled, a lighthearted smile. He had learned to accept this. "I guess you could say I'm close with at least one of my herd-mates. She's kind of like a sister to me. I'm sure she'll be glad to see me."

"Do you always travel alone?"
He asked her. "Any sort of...family?" He shivered slightly, picking up the pace just a tad. He hoped it would get warmer as they traveled East.

She let a wistful smile cross her face as he talked about his herd mates. Part of her longed for that sort of connection, that closeness. She so rarely even had a conversation anymore and even now her face began to ache slightly with the amount of smiling she was doing. Had it been so long since she had made this face? It was another stab to the heart to think about it. When had she last been happy? Before the fire? Her face darkened and she turned it so Abdiel couldn't see it. She didn't turn to face him when he asked about her family, and she didn't answer right away. What could she tell him? Certainly not the truth, never that. She didn't like the idea of lying either, of covering up her mother's existence or making excuses for why she wasn't there. If it hadn't been for Ember her mother WOULD be there.

She had to stop that line of thinking before it go too far. Tears had begun to well up in her eyes but she forced them down, forced calm. She couldn't let the male see the truth or the pain. So she began slowly, her voice carefully calm and as casual as she could manage. "I prefer to travel alone," she said. It wasn't a lie. She couldn't bear to tell her secret to anyone, and she couldn't spend long around someone without them finding out. "It's simple," she turned and gave him as convincing a smile as she could. "No one or argue with or to wait on." No one to talk to or confide in. "No one to confer with on where to go, I can simply go wherever I want." And as far from anyone else as possible. She turned her face away again and kept walking, trying to ignore the pain in her neck from her burning ember. It seemed to flare up more when she was around others, or maybe being around others made her more aware of the pain. In either case, she preferred to be alone, her aching heart be damned.

"Anyway, tell me of this sister-like mare in your herd? What's she like?" She wanted the subject back off of her and onto him. If she kept him talking about himself she could maybe forget her woes, if only for a moment. She hoped so anyway. "I bet she's beautiful, right?" She tried to sound playful, like someone who didn't bear any terrible guilt and who would have only an interest in gossip and silliness. She wished that were true of her. She wished she could be so carefree and to only care about who had a crush on whom and which mares were pretty and which stallions handsome. Those things were so far from her mind as to feel foreign as she tried to conjure them up now.
