Sometimes, Lyonesse wondered if he had a reputation for stupid, reckless behavior around the camp - because surely, by this point, with all the damage he did to himself on a fairly regular basis, he had to. But then again, he was certainly not the only incredibly reckless person - and so maybe in the sea of other people his ability to fairly regularly get injured was passing unnoticed. He would be pretty okay with that.

He was coming back from a run into the city that had brought him in contact with a particularly vicious General with a very nasty sword. Who, apparently, was familiar enough with him to be angry and call him every kind of traitor in the process of trying to detach his head from his shoulders. (Fortunately, the man was more successful at cutting with his insults than his blade.)

He'd put out a call for help, and received a response from Nærøyfjord - which, well, he couldn't exactly complain about the possibility of being literally carried back to camp, since he was pretty sure that might be the only way he was getting there. Also, he rather liked Naer, but then, he was pretty sure the only way to not like the man was if you were on the other end of his hammer.

He leaned himself against a tree, fashioning a makeshift bandage from his cape to stop the bleeding from a nasty slash to the torso while he waited.

Times like this, Nærøyfjord wished his own summons was like Eikþyrnir. The great beast bore Hvergelmir and himself infallibly, swift and sure footed, so often that it was difficult to consider any other service worthwhile in the longrun from the beasts of legend. The woods were never his favorite to traverse- he had to be more careful than most about leaving traceable paths. He'd had to make a point of learning most of the well trodden deer paths for that reason. The earth was already zagged with places it would show less footprint or hoof, and his passage would be no more marked than just another white-tail.

In this case, it meant a few minutes extra waiting time between his post as a Guard, letting the other near guards know to purse-close ranks while he left to immediate necessity and the call of one of their own.

Lyonesse of Earth.
One of his own. The feel of the other man's aura came to the edges of his own, and Nærøyfjord redoubled his sprint. It is no good if I can feel him. Any pursuit can as well. And I without any of the Mauvians, not even PB or J. But there are no other auras near. It is a small blessing. If I don't need my hammer, then I can focus on Lyonesse. He may need wrapping first.

The giant knight didn't pull up until he saw the other leaned and sharing the basics of field medicinal thoughts, slowing to a jog on approach, sucking air through his own teeth at the blood seeping to the rest of the man's uniform. "It is not so good. You are lucky to get this far."

He pulled off his own vest cape to use as stripping, "If you can hold yours as a compress, I can tie strips to hold it tight? You were not followed, ja?"

Lyonesse felt the other Knight's approach, and let out a breath of relief. He was definitely not doing well in his attempts to staunch the bleeding on his own wound, and so the idea of help was incredibly welcome. Also, he really, really wanted to get back to camp and to the hospital and check on Fang and then maybe sleep, some.

He jerked his head at the sound of Nær's voice, and made a small hissing noise of pain - even that motion had jostled the injury enough to make it hurt. "Luck sounds about right," he agreed. It was luck that he was even alive, that he hadn't bled out on his way here, that there was no officer in hot pursuit.

"No, not followed, I knocked him out," he said, and summoned his staff briefly as if to demonstrate how he might have accomplished such a feat while being injured. Also, it provided something convenient to lean some of his weight on other than a tree. "I can definitely hold a compress, if you'll help tie it down." He felt a little dizzy, which meant the blood loss was worse than he had thought. Damn officers and their actually pointy weapons.

Nærøyfjord took to a crouch, using his teeth to start tears at the edge of his own vest before tearing down the magical cloth in larger pulls. Three seemed like enough, given Lyonesse's small size compared to his own. Another shift to kneel in front of the other knight and he set to wrapping and pulling taught the strips. He gave as much of a warning as he could to respect the other knight's bravery. "It will hurt."

"What happened? Were you on a mission?" Talking wasn't ideal since it shifted how much air was or wasn't filling space in the body cavity, but in this case it would give Lyonesse something to focus on that wasn't the introduction of a compress pressure, or the shock of wounds. If he starts trailing off, I'll have a better idea that he's fading as well. Hopefully Princess Ida still has her magic today. This may be too much for surgery with travel time. That if the Prince surgeon is not already busy.

Lyonesse gritted his teeth, taking slow, shallow breaths so as not to change the fill of his chest too much while Naer wrapped it. At least he had some warning, but that didn't change that it very, very definitely hurt. The last thing he wanted was to crumple or scream or otherwise show it.

"Yeah, just me and a Mauvian doing a small supply run." He grimaced slightly. "Obviously sort of a failure. I sent the cat back first when I realized we'd been spotted. Apparently the Negaverse's Princess wants my head on a platter," he said, and his tone was surprisingly dry. It was hard to think too much about Persephone wanting him dead when they'd been close friends, once, but then, he was the traitor, he supposed. "I was pretty sure the kill order would apply to anyone I was with, and cats are too precious a resource to risk."

He considered while he finished the ties. Then Nærøyfjord raised to an inspecting half-stand, double checking the pressure of the compress. "Ja...I remember her. Only from far away. I was not so important. I didn't work with the Corrupted."

As Titanlåvenite, even as a general, he'd mostly served in the capacity of furniture, fireteam member or shock troop. Natron had served years longer as a General, so it made perfect sense he was on the kill lists and awareness of the worthies of the enemy. He'd known the man no better than the Princess with so vast a difference in their worthiness. "I do not think you will walk further."

"I am going to carry you, Lyonesse." It was again a perfunctory warning, without much waiting between stating it and doing it. Nærøyfjord stooped and scooped the man like a bride, only trying to avoid bending his middle much. With how small Lyon was comparatively, it wasn't too hard- there just wasn't enough length to the man's height to require doubling. Nærøyfjord did wait a moment for the other to adjust to comfort in his hold. "Is it alright?"

"The Oasis is probably the closest. Unless you really want some other camp, but they won't have as much medical available."

"I'd rather have been less important, all things considered," Lyonesse said, "particularly less important to crazy obsessive Princesses." He didn't remember Persephone being like that. But Chaos did things to you, things you weren't even always aware of, and it wasn't too much of a stretch to imagine it could have done something to her when she was elevated to Princess.

He had neither the energy nor the stupidity to protest being picked up. The Knight was well aware that walking anywhere was ill-advised. He had only gotten this far by sheer stubbornness anyway, and any more of that would be foolish.

"It's fine," he said, "and the Oasis is...probably the best choice." Particularly if it were the closest.

"Thanks," he said, because really, Naer did not have to be out here, helping him. Surely there were uses for him at camp.

"Metallia would try to remold each and all of us, but we are what we are. We can only be that, dark or light. She did not make us in the beginning, and even her hands are not strong enough to change the work of that will that did. Peace with that truth, that of self and charge, and come the Transcended who are beyond the worst of her fancies. "

Roll-stepping was harder at speed, but seemed a necessity with the breadth of the wound. Lyonesse had jostled himself enough as it was. Enough? Too much. You will not be lost to this. "Tell me about Lyonesse. Your lands. It doesn't have to be in depth. I am worried- keep talking. Soft and steady."

The underbrush started to drift by along a separate deer path than he'd taken to get there. His vest being stripped into a shorter form meant there was less to catch on small branches.

Lyonesse nodded. He liked to think that way, at least - that no matter how hard Metallia had tried, she had never managed to warp him completely away from who he was. Not that it had made all that much difference - until he'd been shocked out of his (pretty well willful) ignorance, he had been her devoted General. A dog in her service.

He closed his eyes and thought of Lyonesse. "It's...an island, off the coast of Britain, I think a lot of it is below sea level? There's this old, old wall, to keep the ocean back, and lots of little houses and things - and a tower, a ruined tower. It's where the Knight - where I - used to live." It was strange to think of himself both as past and present, but he had seen a few flickers of memory, enough to know that yes, he was the same person as the Knight of the past.

"The last Knight was...stiff, and serious, all the time," he said, rambling unasked into description of the person as much as the lands. "So bound to his duty, and so unwilling to live. I'm glad I'm not like that."

The switch of subject from lands to self was noticed, but not complained about. He is still speaking, which is the main point. Lose enough blood and it gets hard to focus. You get cold and sleepy.

A faint scent of pine smoke came, sign that the camp was getting closer. Help and healing were getting closer and closer. Nærøyfjord teased gently, "Are you sure you are different? When was the last time you smiled? Playing with enemies is one thing, but it is not so far beyond attending to duty."

"I don't know if I've seen you smile." Light goading that might earn one.

That actually did get something of a small laugh and a near-smile from Lyonesse. "It has been a long time," he acknowledged. Probably since he'd purified, all things considered. Maybe even before. He couldn't remember a lot of happiness when he was grappling with the choice whether or not to purify.

Perhaps he ought to try more. It felt a little lighter just to let himself laugh, and it wasn't as if every day had to be doom and gloom and the end of the world.

Breaking through the trees into the camp was a gift. "Thank you," he said, when he realized they had in fact made it there.

The opening out of underbrush to the tattered, forest coloured panoply of canvases and other materials was always one of Nærøyfjord's favorite sights. It spoke of the resilience of communities, their creativity and festive, vibrant life- everything that the city wasn't and the Negaverse stole energy orb by orb from the sorrowed souls too fearful or beaten down to stand against the threat of pain and endings. The larger Knight of Earth knew the turns and tree to the Oasis by heart, hurriedly walking a path with barely any attention paid to the way itself.

"Every day the sun greets us, every night the moon stands by our vigil...these are hours that are gifts for our good graces. Even at their most sorrowful, it is better that they be at all, for it mean we still are ourselves, and we may still act." It took a careful, low dip to make it through the entrance. One of Ida's aids saw the, and waved further in for following to a stretcher. "But first you will need to rest, ja? You have earned that much for a little, Lyonesse. Spend it with at least one smile for yourself. "

To Lyonesse, the sounds of the camp were the sounds of home. He remembered no other one, or certainly no other one that had been as warm and welcoming and safe.

When Naer passed him over to the aid, he gave the Knight his best effort at a real, actual smile. "I'll try to do that more often. And also try to get stabbed uh, less often," he said, which seemed a perfectly intelligent if slightly alarming concession to make. "Hopefully we'll get to talk in situations that are slightly less life-threatening."

Or something.
