Up and down, round and round the carousal went. The music continued, never ending its cheery tune. Her mother and father would be happy to learn that she had finally found something that made her heart soar, for it had started to get a bit worrisome that the only thing she could make beautiful was herself. Ashaniel was not entirely vain, but she did care a lot for her beauty and the beauty of those around her. It was what Seelies did. They loved beauty, they embraced it, to them it was a way of life. Her brother had been beautiful once until the incident occurred. It was an accident, but the elders did not see it as such. They cast him out, to be a part of the darkness and a world filled with taint. Ash had wanted to get justice for her brother, but knew that there must be a balance in the world and if the Seelies all became tainted, then there would be too much wickedness and not enough love and light.

This was neutral land she was upon, neither light nor dark owned it and it was the perfect place to meet her estranged brother. Would he be here today? Would she be able to recognize him if he did come? They had been foals the last time she had seen him and even now the memory of their time together is vague in her mind. She pushed those thoughts aside and continued to listen to the music. Even though she knew it was not her fault, she felt as if she was to blame for the incident and because of that feeling, she felt she was in debt to her brother. It was not a feeling that she relished, for she hated owing someone for a long extended period of time, it was like an itch she could not scratch. Soon she would be rid of that itch.

It was all so easy to say these things. That her brother was no more than an obligation to fill and that it was right that he had been banished because of his wicked ways, but none of those words could describe the feelings she had for her brother. She loved him. He was her flesh and her blood. Yes he may be tainted, but he was still her family. It bothered her that her family could not see that, or that the court could not see it. Love conquered all was a profound belief within the Seelie culture and yet… they did not accept the love she felt for her brother. Why? Did they worry that she would become tainted as well? Was that even possible? Could the taint spread? With a violent shove, she pushed the thoughts from her mind, there was no use worrying about it now. She was not even sure her brother would show and then she would have caused worry lines for nothing.

It was the carousel, that stupid carousel. Herne curled his lip and gave his head a shake, taking a step back from the blasted thing. He'd never once doubted who he had become before he spotted it. The music and the bright lights from the carousel had cast some sort of spell on him clearly. He was content with what his life was. He'd embraced the darkness in his soul and was better for it, there was no denying that. He hadn't ever wanted to go back. He'd never belonged in the Seelie Court. He was an Unseelie through and through.

Still, he couldn't blame the carousel for the reason he was there in the first place. He'd come at the request of his sister. She had wanted to see him after all these years and he had come, without ever casting eyes on the carousel. Any spell cast by the carousel, real or imagined, could not explain why he had agreed to come in the first place. Perhaps it was still some lingering sentiment toward his sister, an excuse to see her again. Or maybe it was a chance to antagonize her, and prove his real nature. Honestly, he didn't know why. He couldn't answer the question, not even to himself.

Should she be worried? How long had she been standing gazing at the carousel? Minutes, hours, days? She did not believe it to be the latter, for surely one of the Seelie Court members would have come to find her, unless they believe her to be tainted as well. Does she still have a home to return to? What would mother and father say? Stop! She pushed the negative thoughts from her mind once again. Nothing of use would come from thinking so negatively. Ashaniel cast her gaze about the Carousel, trying to find the one who had been her brother. She was not even sure she would be able to recognize the stallion who her brother had transformed into, so she could only hope that he would recognize her or by some miracle her heart would know the form of her brother. There was a soquili not to far from her, who was dark in coloration and had a blood red mane. Her heart began to quicken. There were stories that the Elders told the younglings, about the monster her brother had become, how when he rolled in the blood of the foal his scales and hair took upon the color of spilt blood. His body became dark and marked with markings of one filled with darkness and taint. He had to be the one the Elders talked about. He had to be her brother.

She was saddened to say that she had forgotten the name of her brother. It had been forbidden for them to speak of his name and whenever she tried she would get a stern punishment. And even if she did remember, he probably took upon another when he embraced being an Unseelie. What had happened? Why did he not come to her when he first had the dark thoughts? She may not have been able to help completely, but she would have tried. Again she shook her head, there was no use in thinking of what ifs and how actions could have changed the past. What happened happened and there was nothing she could do to change what transpired. With a deep breath to calm her shaking nerves she walked over to the stallion, would he remember the proper manners of the court? Should she greet him in such a way or should she be rude and ask him a direct question? He was an Unseelie, of course he would not be insulted if she asked him a direct question. With a shake of her head and a small laugh she faced the stallion who she believed to be her brother. “Are you the one I seek? Are you my brother?” They were direct questions and the asking of them made her feel improper. It was not polite to ask questions in such a way, only the young were allowed to get away with such terrible manners, but she really wanted to know if the marked stallion was who she believed him to be.

He hadn't noticed the mare approach him; he was still much too fascinated by the carousel, eyes glued to the flashing lights and spinning sights. It had him mesmerized, holding him still as he looked inside himself, trying to find answers to questions he didn't even know. The spinning carousel had cast so much doubt on him, on his very being, and he didn't know why. He just knew that when he looked at it...It became very apparent to him that there was something wrong, something missing in his life. Now exactly what that was...

"Hm?" Someone spoke to him, and Herne's ears swivelled in that direction, his eyes casting sideways to see to whom the voice belonged to. The dainty pink mare with peacock feathers twined in her immense expanse of mane could only be his sister. He really wasn't sure how he felt upon seeing her either. There was a flood of emotion, but he really didn't know what of. He couldn't describe it.

His gaze went back to the carousel and he gave a small curt nod. "Yeah," he said, his voice whisper soft, barely audible over the carousel's music, "I think I am."

Time seemed to stand still as the question hung between them, the music of the carousel continued to play. She wanted to get lost in the music and forget about the stallion that was standing so close. Due to her fight with the attractive lure of the music, Ashaniel almost missed the whispered words of the red stallion. Her heart leapt, he was her brother, and he was the one she had been waiting to meet, so she could remove the debt she felt she owed. The Seelie mare bowed her head, “I am delighted to finally meet you again, although I must admit my memories of you as a foal seemed to have vanished all together, for that I must apologize.” She stared at the stallion, trying to gain a flicker of memory, but nothing came to mind, did she block out the traumatic event or had the Elders done something? The mare remembered clearly the transformation of her best friend into the tainted Unseelie, but that had occurred when she was an adult. Memories were such fleeting things. “I am known as Ashaniel. It would please me greatly to know what it is I should call you, brother.”

Ah, there it was. He snapped back to the present and to their current situation and bristled at her words, his long ears flicking with great irritation. "One thing you may not call me is brother," he snapped, turning to glare at her. He was not her brother. He had not been her brother for a very long time, not since the day he had been run out of his home. His nostrils flared at the painful memory. He had been a foal. A foal! What had happened with the other foal had been an accident, but no one had cared. No one had given him the benefit of doubt. No one had asked him what had happened. He'd just been chased out.

Still huffing, he snapped his leathery wings on his back and turned to face her fully now. He was here now. However he felt, he would deal with it. First he had to learn why she had reached out to him; why now, so many years later. He wouldn't learn that from snapping at her.

"Herne. My name is Herne."

Behind her stoic facial mask, the mare hid her fear. She had not expected him to snap at her or hold such hatred toward her; she had not been the one to chase him out nor had she ever despised him for being tainted. Her memories of that time were gone, but when she learned the truth of her brother, she had never stopped dreaming of the day when she could finally meet him and set to right the wrong the Seelies had done.

She did not respond to his harsh snap, there was no point and also she did not know what to say. When he turned to face her, Ashaniel resisted the urge to step back; she held firm and looked her brother in the eye. Her voice was polite, “It is a pleasure to meet you Herne. I apologize for my earlier assumption, perhaps one day I may have that honor.”

The mare took in a deep breath, “You are probably wondering why I had asked to meet you here at the carousel. A few moon turns past I had finally learned of the fate of the foal who had once been my brother,” she looked at him, wondering if that word would cause him to snap again, “What I learned shocked and horrified me, for it is the belief of the Seelie Court that Love Conquers All, and yet they did not give you a chance. My heart wept for the brother I had lost, but I did not see a way to make right the wrong. Even now, as I stand before you, I am at a loss.”

She did not flinch away from him and his harsh outburst in fear as Herne had expected her to do. He had been treated like a savage, a monster, a demon by the other Seelie the day he'd been cast out. His own family hadn't defended him or stood by his side. They had let him be cast out.

Ashaniel continued to speak and he listened to her without interruption. The fact that she did not remember him angered him, but it didn't surprise him. Of course she did not, the elders would have seen to that. Any good memories that the Seelie had had of him would have been wiped from their minds. He had been ostracized and had become the dark prince, the very stuff of nightmares, a warning to the foals to come afterward. Be wary, for if ye stray from the way of the Seelie and let the darkness in, ye too will be judged and cast out for eternity.

He, on the other hand, they had left his memories intact, so that he could remember exactly what was lost. He himself had had to actively push those thoughts and feelings aside, only fostering the darkness inside him all the more as he did.

The rest of her words were trickery, they had to be. He looked at her suspiciously. Why, after all these years, would it now occur to her to learn what had befallen her brother and to lament? No, this was a ruse of some sort of the Seelie Court. It had to be.

"Did they not tell you of what I had done to be cast out? The dark, horrible thing that I did to that foal, he who had been my friend?"
