Sometimes, Horace just felt like hitting things. On the island, this wasn't a problem - there was a training field for just this reason. It was better, of course, against another person. And perhaps he could fiond someone willing to sweat, just a bit. Horace would likely lose; he was getting used to the feeling. He was still shiningly new and weak, very weak. {you will become more, of course.} Jannisari's voice slithered in his mind, twining around every insecurity, ferreting out the ones he never thought about. She did not accept if's or but's or hesistations. So, Horace was out here, off to shred a dummy or five: a slow and steady crawl to becoming better. But for the moment, he leaned against a post and looked around, trying to see if there was someone he could try to spar against instead. Dummies were inorganic and did not move. He would learn more against a live target. As he looked, he whistled an off-key rendition of some video game theme - Horace couldn't even remember which. kuuropii HAHA just realized the title sounds like I want chance but no THE KIWI

Arorangi had been working hard over the past several weeks, attempting to do his best when it came to training and preparing himself. He hadn't gotten on too many missions, and the few he had attended had had little effect on him as a whole. And, if anything, they only served to remind him of just how new he still was, in spite of being on the island for almost six months now.
The training field was beginning to become second nature to him, and today was no exception. Arorangi ambled out towards it, dressed in a pair of khakis and a brightly colored orange and blue shirt that was, in spite of the chill weather, short-sleeved. His dreads were pulled back in a thick knot at the back of his neck, a few falling loose about his large shoulders, and he was whistling merrily when he came upon someone else.
"Ah!" he said brightly, and lifted a tattooed hand in greeting, beaming at the unfamiliar young man. "Kia ora, my friend! Are you practicing out here? Would you perhaps enjoy a spar with me, if you are otherwise unoccupied?"The Semblance of Unity um pls ignore this dice roll THAT WAS JUST ROLLED OUT OF HABIT I'M SORRY IGNORE IT

For one brief, shining moment, their whistles clashed wildly and shrilly. And then the other hunter spoke and his overwhelming cheerful tone forced an answering smile from Horace. He raised a hand in response, jogging closer. Horace approved of the short sleeves and bright colors, his own sweater sleeveless (as always). Today a orange fish was emblazoned on the purple sweater, garishly charming. Or at least Horace liked to think so. All in all, he looked terribly colorful today, with orange sneakers and bright bracelets. One of his many bracelets was revealed to be a hairtie as he quickly bundle his hair up. "Yeah, just trying to muster the motivation against the dummies. It's not the same as against people, ya know?" He grinned at the man and stuck out a hand. "I'm Horace Nokoni. Nice tattoos."

Arorangi was beaming at the young man in front of him, in spite of him being unfamiliar. There were bright, cheerful colors and a fun looking fish on his sweater anyway, which Arorangi approved of, and as he stepped closer, the smile on his face grew wider.
"I hear you there, mate!" he said cheerfully, and reached for the offered hand, giving it a firm, enthusiastic shake. "I am Arorangi Te Ariki! I have been here a few months now!"
At the mention of his tattoos, Arorangi grinned. "Thank you! Some were a little painful to get, but I am glad to have them all the same! They are a representation of my heritage, after all, and they are my pride and joy as you can see!"
As if to accompany this statement, he clapped a large hand on his shoulder, over several of the tattoos, and patted them fondly.

"Ah, we're in the same boat, then! I just popped out right before Thanksgiving." He eyed the other man's tattoos. "Sadly, my tattoos don't mean a thing. Those are ...Maori tattoos? Sometime, you should tell me their story." Arorangi was the type of person that set others at ease, he thought. It didn't stop him from wanting to spar - to get out that itch underneath his skin. His grin widened, becoming just a little sharper. "For now, though - wanna spar? You can go first."

Arorangi looked very pleased.
"They are indeed Maori tattoos!" he said happily, rocking back on his heels. "I am born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand! It is very nice to know that someone was able to know what they were. I do not mind explaining, but it is still very good to see someone who recognizes them on their own."
Arorangi slid the spear around and tapped it against the ground.
"A spar it is, then!" he said with a grin. "It is not very easy to practice against these dummies, after all."

"Sadly, none of mine mean a thing." He poked one of the bands around his arm/ "Maybe one day. Though I'd like to learn about yours." With a soft hiss, Jannisari appeared on his fists, small metal gleaming. "Well, uhm, you've certainly got the reach on me." Horace balance of the balls of his feet. He'd need to be fast. "Tattoos do not have to mean anything!" said Arorangi with a smile. "They can just be got for fun or because you wished to! I got mine because of my tradition and my heritage, but that does not mean that it is the same for everyone, after all!"
At least it wasn't a long range weapon versus a short ranged one. Arorangi gave the weapon a curious look, wrapping his fingers around his own spear.
"We will just do our best, then!" he replied cheerfully, and thrust the spear toward Horace's torso.

"Alright, let's see what you can d- <********> Arorangi's spear caught Horace right in the side of his poor stomach. Horace's hands clamped aropund the shaft of the spear and he shoved it back at the other hunter, hoping to catch Aro's own middle. With another grunt, he backpedaled. {how inelegant.} {Yes, I know, Doctor.}
"Damn, Arorangi. Good hit. Lucky I didn't eat lunch." But he grinned and prepared himself for the next blow.

Arorangi said a very hasty, "I am very sorry! I did not mean to hit so hard!" before remembering that this was supposed to be a spar, and it was meant to be friendly while still practicing, so they were meant to be hitting each other back and forth as best as they could.
He stumbled back at the push, feet skidding in the grass, and laughed.
"I used to spearfish when I was in New Zealand," he said, by way of explanation. Arorangi flipped the spear sideways and swung it towards one fo Horace's legs. "Though to be fair, it is much different fighting people than it is simply poking at a fish."

He opened his mouth to say that yes, Aro did mean to hit that hard when that spear neatly clipped him in the leg. Horace quite neatly toppled over, head hitting the ground with a loud thwack. He lay there for a moment. "Apparently," he said dryly. "I am a fish." He flopped, but just once. They were in the middle of a spar, after all. In one smooth movement, he rose up into a crouch and shot forward, aiming to at least clip one of Aro's knees. HP: 25 DMG: 3 CHR: 2/3

He lifted a hand, rubbing sheepishly at the back of his neck.
"Well," Arorangi said with a smile. "You are a very nice fish if you are a fish!"
Laughing good naturedly, he twisted partly out of Horace's way, but the weapon still managed to clip him in the leg. Arorangi staggered, sliding on the grass, and used the spear to propel himself back into the proper position, flipping his dreadlocks out of his face.
He attempted another hit to Horace's other leg.

Horace saw the spear coming this time, and twisted his knee to avoid it in an odd movement strangely reminiscent of Elvis Presley's signature dance moves. Unfortunately, Horace was not Elvis and the spear still grazed his skin slightly. "Hey." he said, lunging forward. He dodged the spear and came up in close to Aro, fists heading for the man's rib cage. "Teach me something in Maori?" HP: 25 DMG: 4 CHR: 3/3

He grinned, and shifted around, wheezing as Horace's hand slammed into his side. Arorangi stumbled a little, a gasp escaping his throat as the wind was knocked out of him, and then pushed his dreadlocks from his face, laughing.
"Sure!" he said brightly. " 'Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei.' "
The spear swiveled around and Arorangi jabbed it at Horace.
"It means 'Aim for the highest cloud so that if you miss it, you will hit a lofty mountain.' "
