Basement. Room 38.

Nellie checked the Twitter post on her phone again for good measure then replaced it in her pocket, wanting to be sure that she had the right room before knocking on the door to make her presence known. This part of the basement looked relatively unoccupied for now compared to the stretch that her cousin Lilac and a couple of other trainees resided in. It probably meant that Horace had recently woken up from pod stasis or that the other trainee was the type who very much preferred the peace and quiet afforded by the room's location.

Anyways he seemed rather friendly given his reaction to her tweets thus far unlike some of the other Hunters like a certain Scottish redhead so that kinda helped somewhat in easing the nervousness that Nellie currently felt as she stood before the door and gathered up the courage to knock tentatively on it. "This is Nellie here."

For some reason, Horace had not expected Nellie to show up so quickly. He felt as though he had barely put down his phone before she was there, knocking. Her knock was timid and sweet, much like her voice. Hastily, he shoved a pile of clothing off of his one chair and into the dresser before loping over to the door. If he had thought ahead a little more, he would've tidied. As it was, he was not inclined to messiness (except with clothing), and he always cleaned thoroughly when Jan came over. But, no matter how clean he kept it, a basement room was a basement room and thusly, pretty dark and dirty-looking.

"Hey, Nellie. I'm Horace." She was slim, but somehow looked older than he thought she would. He stuck his hand out for a shake before gesturing her in. The only colorful thing in his room was the bookcase, full of romances (mostly historical), and the occassional fantasy and sci-fi novel. "Ignore the mess, sorry. So, what kind of books do you generally read?"

Nellie smiled brightly at the young Death trainee when he opened the door for her, grasping the hand that was offered as she stepped into the room proper. "Hi Ho-Horace." Chewing on her lower lip at her trip up over the other hunter's name and hoping that he wouldn't mind that terribly much, she shook her head and waved her hand at the apology given for the room's current state.

"It's okie. Nellie should apologise for coming over at such short notice." It was Horace's room after all, she rationalised. His very own personal space for which he shouldn't feel obligated to change just because of her very brief visit. With this being her very first time in a guy's room, the Mist couldn't help but let her gaze wander a little to see if its layout was different compared to hers and Lilac's.

The size of the room was pretty much the same overall, with just enough room for a bed, a desk and an additional piece of small furniture which in Horace's case was a bookcase. She hadn't really decided on something for herself yet so that particular spot in her room was still unoccupied at the moment. "Mostly books on the various subjects that were based on the recommendations of the home schooling tutor. Other than that, there was A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks. Dad was pretty strict on the types of books that Nellie read. What about Horace?"

Ho-ho-horace. It was that time of year, after all. He answered her smile with one of his own. "No apologies needed for coming over, Nellie. I just don't get many visitors. You were home schooled? Did you like it?" He walked over to the bookcase and began pulling a few books off. "C'mere." In his hands he held several historical romances, one paranormal romance (in case she was into that) and one modern romance about hot nerds.

"I, uh, read a lot of romance novels, to be honest. I like happy endings." His voice was sheepish and red tinged his cheeks. After all, it was very much a girly type of thing to like. "Mainly ones set in regency England. Historical. So, do you think any of these look appealing?" Among the books he held were Dancing At Midnight, Fantasy Lover, Ever Yours.

"Spies or dances? Scots or Englishmen?"

"Yeah." Nellie followed Horace's lead eagerly, nodding in response to his question about her being home schooled before following shortly with a brief explanation as to why that was arranged for her. "Nellie didn't have any friends at school since she talks funny so Dad decided to put Nellie on home schooling instead." She gave a small shrug at her own words, trying to pretend that that and the responses that she got over Twitter didn't bother her at all. Her parents weren't around to protect her anymore and it was obvious that no one on Deus was going to coddle her so she might as well suck it up and try to deal with it somehow.

"Happy endings are good. It'll be sad if there's no happily ever after after everything the characters have been through." She offered, glad for the distraction as she turned each of the books in turn to peruse the blurb located on the back cover. "Dances and Englishmen. This one looks interesting." Picking up the book that was titled Dancing At Midnight, she smiled at Horace then tilted her head towards the one located next to it (Fantasy Lover). "... isn't slavery supposed to be bad and against the law?" She mumbled sheepishly with an awkward look on her face, hoping that he wouldn't laugh at her for asking such a funny question in the first place.

Horace hummed thoughtfully for a moment. "Well, I can't say you missed much being home-schooled instead of public. I hated public school most of the time - got made fun of a lot." He shrugged and gave her a lopsided grin. In truth, he'd been able to deal with most of the teasing that had come with his stories about 'trees that moved', and as he'd grown, Horace had learned to shut up about it. It was only after the school had found out he was anything but straiight that it had gotten truly bad.

"Yes!" he said enthusiastically. "It's nice to think that there's a happy ending always waiting for you, er... for the characters." He caughed and would've flushed, but his dark skin hid it well. At her statement about slavery, he peered at the book she'd taken. "Oh! Yeah, in this book he's been like... turned into a book and uh, people summon him for sex stuff, but the book is about him getting free! So it's alright. Do you want like magic in a book or regular romance?"

"Why's that?" Nellie shot Horace a look when he spoke of his experience back when he was in a public school. She couldn't help frowning at that, not because she envied the fact that he was able to go through the education system in a public school with those who were of the same age as him but more for the fact that he had to put up with being made fun of and presumably bullied at some point even if that didn't come up in the conversation. "Is it because of what happens in the shadows that only Horace could see?"

"For both the reader and the characters." She nodded with a really big smile, her expression shifting to one of sheer awkwardness when the subject of sex was brought up. "S-Sex stuff?" She tripped over her own words, her entire face turning red at the same moment as what her parents had previously mentioned about the subject being an inappropriate matter to speak of till she came of age later on in life came to her mind.

"B-But... even if it's a guy, Nellie thinks that it's kind of sad that the guy is being used like that." She might not know the specifics as to what sex stuff between a man and a woman entailed but she could still empathise with the fact that the main character in the aforementioned book was being subjected to something that involved him being exploited by women over and over.

"Perhaps um... regular romance for a start?"

"Mmm, yeah, that and other things. Dating boys, et cetera," he said distractedly, poking through his bookshelf still. At her sudden awkwardness in tone, he shifted, looking at her again. He let it pass for now/ "Of course it's sad - gotta have sad for the happy parts to count!" Regular romance? He plucked a few books from her hands, leaving her with Dancing at Midnight.

"Maybe this one to start, then. Nellie, I dunno what you're comfortable with and not, but none of my books don't have sex in them. I'm sorry." Horace grimaced, not meeting Nellie's eyes for a second.

"Boys? But Horace's a guy too..." The words were out of Nellie's mouth even before the implications of what she said hit her. When she realised a couple of seconds later that what she said might have a negative connotation to it, she quickly elaborated on what she meant by that. "Oh... but why guys? How is it different from dating a girl?"

She didn't see anything wrong with a person liking someone of the same gender in spite of society's perception of a heterosexual relationship to be the benchmark of what was normal or not. But that didn't mean that she wasn't curious as to why a person would favour someone of the same gender in a long term relationship, marriage and settling down kind of way.

"Nellie supposes that Horace has a point there." She nodded, letting Horace take the books away till she was left with only one that was his recommendation to her. "It's okie. Nellie can't remain ignorant about sex forever. Maybe it'll help improve the opinion that people have of Nellie too." She smiled sheepishly as she hugged the book to her chest.

He raised an eyebrow before she explained herself. "Oh, well, I'm from Oklahoma and they aren't very..." Horace made a face. "-kind to that sort of thing." He supposed, in a way, he was lucky. Well, luckier than others.

"You're a nice girl, Nellie. Let me know if someone bullies you and I'll beat 'em up." He grinned. "Now, I want a book report when you're done, okay?" He was teasing, of course and winked.

She shook her head with a frown. "Well, Horace is here on Deus now so... no one's going to give Horace a hard time about that right?" That would make sense since there were male hunters who fancied other guys too from what she could tell over Twitter.

"Nellie doesn't think that that kind of violence is going to be necessary but thanks Horace." Nellie smiled sweetly and nodded. "Okie. Nellie will try to finish this within a month then return it."
