Reality shifted, and the cold winter winds of Destiny City were replaced by a dry heat and a red dust that smelled like rust, curling around the flagstone path in little eddies as though someone were twirling their finger in the light powdery dust.

They stood in the arch way of an huge coliseum, solid and imposing, with the doorways flanked by stone bulls that stood larger than either of them, their powerful necks, shoulders and flanks decorated with what must have been meant to represent decorative harnesses and brass trimmings. Bells and blankets with flowers and spirals and hints of ornate weapons.

To one side the interior of the coliseum loomed through the end of a walk way that was once lit by torches, their sconces long empty, the interior walkway patterned with a complicated maze and lettering on the walls in something unreadable.

To the other side, broad streets with long empty shops, some of which still held battered examples of the things they had once sold.

Kairatos released Canopus's hand to glance around, spreading his arms to encompass the areas.

"Welcome to Mars, or... my corner of it. This, is the city of Kairatos, and this..." He gestured to the huge Coliseum. "Was her heart once."

Admittedly Canopus had no idea what she was expecting out of this, though she was certain that what she would get would probably blow her mind. When she told Kairatos to take her, she almost expected it to all be a clever ruse and that he would only be luring her into a trap. That was a terrible thought to have, especially for someone who sounded so kind and passionate about wanting peace, but was it not understandable, given the past year?

Any and everyone could have been an enemy, and those who weren't could easily become one, should the opportunity arise. Why should this knight, with his bold speech, be any different? She wished she could have trusted him or others again, but it was hard, and she could not stop herself from wincing when the world around her changed. No longer were they in Destiny City, or even Earth, and for a brief moment, her fears and troubles melted away when she realized that she was in space... space! Every Dark Mirror Senshi's dream come true!

And yet...

Kairatos released her, but she didn't wander off or float away, and she found it easy to breathe, considering... space... She managed to take a few steps forward but that was all she could brave, looking around at the derelict colosseum and simply trying to take in everything. Maybe she's find the strength to talk in a few minutes, but for now, all she could was stare, as if trying to imagination there once being life here, and what could have possibly snuffed it out.

Kairatos told her already, though, didn't he? 'Chaos did. In a way, I did...'

"I'm sure it was a very beautiful and strong heart, in its heyday..." She said, fearing that her compliment would come off as a throw-away comment and he would not hear the sincerity behind her words. Then, it dawned on her, and despite the rain cloud that loomed over her, she couldn't help but find herself smiling. "Mars. We're on Mars..."

At the words We're on Mars, Kairatos' waryness transformed to a grin so wide it looked uncomfortable to maintain, but brilliant with it's raw enthusiasm. "Yep!" He declared, with a certain degree of pride. "And it was, it really was. Plenty of prisons and court houses on Mars, since it was a major seat of justice and law, but none of that happened in there. No one got fed to the lions, warriors trained, athletes competed... no one went in there to die, they went in to show people from around the universe their skills, or try their hand at Bull Dancing."

He wished he could show her, but that was sort of out of the question.

"Walk around, have a look if you want. Pretty sure you can't wreck anything. The cultures are different... but the handful of other wonders I've visited, more or less like this. They seem to improve when visited... but I'm talking... more like a good house cleaning, some damage repair, not the return of... you know... people."

Whatever horrible, wretched mood had consumed her in the park seemed to dissipate, and not be little bits and pieces but whole chunks. In all of her life, she had read many stories of space exploration and the joy that came with discovering a new world, living or derelict. She didn't want to think that such a place as this was devoid of life, so her mind simply shut that part down and allowed her to enjoy the beauty and awe that surrounded her.

Like a little girl being presented a huge castle to explore, Canopus was off, scuffling around the ruins and looking at everything and touching everything she could, as if getting a physical feel of it would solidify the fact that all of this was real in her mind. Like a child in a candy store, she darted from one spot to another, and she couldn't even speak, she was too excited!

'I'm on Mars! I'm on MARS!' She thought with a giddy giggle, almost forgetting the one that brought her here until she caught his words. She slowed down to listen, but not by much. Bit by bit, her glee warped into genuine curiosity, and she pressed herself against a pillar to test its strength and backed away when she thought she saw it sway. It might have been an optical illusion, but she didn't want to risk it! "Bull Dancing? That isn't like... the run of the Bulls or the bull fights, right?"

The thought of killing such creatures for sport... it might have left a sour taste in her mouth on Earth, but she reminded herself that she wasn't there. She was on Mars! She was on MARS!

"Um... do you have any idea what you'd need to do? To bring the people... the Martians back?"

"...I have no idea what it would take to bring them back." He answered, a bit sollemnly. "So for right now all I get is... memories and what you see."

He looked around then pointed toward an painted mural, an white bull charging, head lowered, with an atheletic looking woman in what appeared to be mid tumble, leaping over it.

"That's bull dancing. A little different than on earth, Warriors of Kairatos trained with the bulls we bred here. They were partners, it was about skill and trust and timing inspired by skills that could apply to the battle field. That's one of the reasons for all the..." He gestured at his armor with a wry smile. "Well. You know."

It was almost sobering to hear that Kairatos didn't know how to bring the people back, but it only took off such a tiny piece of her enthusiasm and it hardly showed at all as she turned her head to look away so that he wouldn't see it and think she was pitying him. In a way, she did, but she also wanted to hide the envy she felt, that he could at least own such a place. She couldn't even see her Canopus...

Her mind forced that topic away and the mural he pointed to and his explanation did a great job in distracting her for that sickening truth. It was an interesting mural, definitely, but not as interesting as the story behind it. "I'm relieved it's not like fighting the bull. They're such lovely creatures... especially this one. Such a lovely color for a bull!"

She looked over at his attire and immediately looked away when she felt like she was intruding, and she looked dead on at the mural to hide the slightest color added to her cheeks. "It's... it makes sense, then. Offers flexibility to be able to make the leap as well as protection should something go wrong. Does that mean you were a Bull Dancer in the past?"

"I... don't remember much of it, but I remember going to the stables with my father to see my partner when we first started working together. He was red, and I named him Asterion. I now I wasn't a born natural. There was a woman I remember teasing me. Apparently..." He walked closer to the mural and twirled his finger in an gesture to indicate the clumsy roll.

"I pretty much -rolled- over him rather than jumped. Kind of embarrassing when you're supposed to represent the entire city. But the important part was getting up and trying again, even when you screw up in front of a crowd."

Or your father, with his disapproving stare.

"Red, Black, and White were the colors they bred for, there was a lot of pride taken in getting a really good blood line going. Diluting it with outside blood wasn't unthinkable, but it probably meant your resulting bulls and cows were watched much more harshly for flaws that would cause problems."

Canopus had never been too close to a bull before. While she imagined that they were strong and magnificent creatures, she was admittedly too skittish and shy, and also not lacking in the common sense department, to ever dare get near one. They were strong, fast, and those horns weren't simply for show! The thought of someone being near them was admiring enough, but someone jumping over them? "The Bull Dancers must have been very brave and skilled, then..."

She tried not to imagine Kairatos's tumbling over the bull, knowing that it would have made her break out into a giggling fit and would probably hurt his feelings, but it was impossible not to smile. She managed to catch it before it could grow any further, cupping her mouth with her hand and ducking behind the pillar as she did so. She was still so excited and she wanted to know more! "Asterion? That's such a pretty name... and a woman teasing? Was she older than you? Your teacher, a mentor? Fellow student... possible love interest?"

She knew she couldn't have endured the embarrassment, and her envy and admiration for Kairatos only grew. To be able to get up and try again after that? Bull Dancers were strong indeed! And yet, all that was left of them was this ruins, and their single knight... their tumbling knight. It was almost sad... "So... selective breeding, then? I can understand. They want to make sure they keep the best and weed out the weak. Wait, is this for the bulls or...?"

"Ehhh. M-ostly the bulls?" He drew out the words with a sort of wince, apologizing for the past. "My mother came here from earth to marry my father. I don't have all the memories still, but I'm pretty sure there was a bit of a stir that the knight of Kairatos was reborn to someone who wasn't purely bloodlined to Mars, but if anyone outright hated it, I don't remember them getting in my face about it. It was a literally lifetime ago though, so it barely even matters now, does it? And I'm pretty sure she as a fellow student. Little older than me. She had a black bull, same color as her hair. His horn spread was...." He spread his arms apart in indication. "Like this. HUGE. He could scratch lines in the roof of his stall. Actually a lot of them could if they put their mind to it. Trying to show off. I think if she was reborn today she'd probably be an olympic athlete, she was damn good at it. I think she might have had some relatives from Themiscara."

It was a good thing she hid behind the pillar because she was blushing profusely and no amount of makeup or her hands could cover that. She tried to, feeling the warmth of her cheeks through the elegant gloves she wore and refusing to show herself until she was certain it was gone. Until then, this pillar might as well have been her new home. "Oh... oh my... I'm sorry if it was too personal. I'm afraid I'm too nosy sometimes..."

As guilty as she felt for prying into his business, she was still fascinated by it. Scandal among the knights of Kairatos! Earth woman marrying one of their Mars knights, stir in a little controversy and bull dancing and this would have been a novel that Canopus simply devoured. If she had any confidence in her own writing ability, maybe she could do this some justice, but alas, she felt she lacked the talent!

Finally, the obsessive blushing was gone and she peered from around the pillar as he was describing the bulls' horns. He wasn't lying, it was an impressive sight! Or would have been... "It sounds so... oh, I don't know, I read so many books but I can't seem to find the words for them when I need them. It sounds great... I'm sorry about what happened here. It's a shame... I'd like to see one of these bulls or the dance in person."

"It is a shame, but it's also a big reason to fight for the continued health of Earth. I don't know that there's anyplace left. And there are so many things on earth that remind me of Mars that I imagine there are hints of other worlds as well."

He no longer got the idea of dismissing Senshi or Knights as 'alien'. They'd been born on earth, and it seemed obvious, even if it was largely unfounded, that Earth and these other worlds had impacted each other.

But then again, he was more than pleased to show off, tapping a finger to the amulet around his neck. "...But on a less depressing note, I can show you ONE of those, though not the Bull Dancing. I haven't exactly spent this go round training to do it.

The energy to call on Asterion felt stronger here, less limited, and he was easier to call, The Huge red bull stepping out in a flicker of light, his fire dimmer, as though he were covered in candle flames that flickered in the breeze.

The bull flicked an ear, lifting his head and eyeing Canopus warily as he moved forward, clearly unsure what to think of her, but he did not attack, only shook his horns and moved to stand closer to the Knight of Mars. Nearly the size of a horse, with a barrel shaped body and white horns as long as the Knight's arms, he moved with a surprising grace on his slender legs.

"Asterion was my partner then and my partner and summon now."

Canopus' smile faded though it hadn't completely dropped into a frown. At least not yet. She managed to hold onto it as she mulled over what he had said and the sense of hopelessness she felt within her. She wasn't sure if he was being naive and overly optimistic, or if the problem was with her. The future, those visions... they struck past skin and flesh and bone and right to the core and it was hard to think that there would be much of an Earth left, but he seemed so positive that they could stop it. So much so that Canopus wanted to believe... so she did, even if only for a little while.

Maybe it was his conviction that made her smile stick, but what caused it to perk again was the summoning of the bull. She watched, eyes wide and soaking in everything she saw, and despite those terrifyingly sharp horns and its bulging muscles, Canopus had to fight every bit of herself to not run towards it and touch him. She could sense it, Asterion, was weary of her and she kept her distance, unable and unwilling to tear her eyes off of such a magnificent creature.

"He's beautiful... and quite formidable!" Canopus said with awe, wriggling her fingers and scrunching at her fabric to keep her hands to herself. She wanted to pet him, but wouldn't dare! "I didn't know Knights had summons. Or do only certain knights do?"

"I... don't know. No wait, that's not true. I'm... fairly sure Hvergelmer has or will have one. Themiscara's is a horse... I don't know about others, but I don't know if weaker knights have the power to draw on them. I can only summon him for a short time on earth. Probably just as well..." He reached to path the burning nose and thought better of it, drawing just short. He remembered Asterion without burning war oil, but he wasn't sure he could banish those flames even here. "Sorry I can't show you the rest, I'd rather not try and teleport us back and then drag my sorry a** to a Chiropractor." He joked. "Probably after the burn ward."

Kairatos dropped several names of knights that Canopus suspected were his friends, and Canopus found herself longing to meet them as well. Where were their wonders? Would they be willing to take her to their wonders as Kairatos had, or was Kairatos an oddity even among his kind? She didn't think that was possible... he wouldn't associate himself with others that would be quick to kill, would he?

It was ultimately neither here or there. She made a mental note of those names to try and meet them later, for now keeping her attention onto Kairatos and his magnificent bull for awhile longer. Oh how she wanted to touch him, but she resisted, knowing it would be painful, knowing that it'd be a huge mistake, even if the tips of her fingers simply brushed against it for a second.

"It's alright," she said with a bright smile, rare but genuine. Her spirits had taken such a huge turn in a matter of minutes, and her heart was filled with so much joy and wonder that it was almost hard to remember what had torn her so down to begin with. She didn't want to leave because it would mean accepting that darkness back into her heart, but maybe it wouldn't be bad if she could bottle up some of these feelings for the trip back home. "I really do appreciate you taking me here... I'm afraid there's not much I can do to pay you back, but if there's anything I could do... to, you know... help with your homeworld or Earth, I'd be happy to help."

She wasn't sure how, outside of abandoning her disillusioned quest for energy, but she was true to her word. There had to be something she could do... maybe not for her own home world, but Mars, and definitely Earth could have benefited from her help.

"You live there too, makes it as good a home as any." He pointed out, nudging his elbow in her direction even if it didn't make contact. "I'm not asking for payback, I just... I spent years wrapped up in Chaos's lies. I just want to make sure people know what they're fighting for, because I don't think at this point any of it has anything to do with Moon Queen's or any of that stuff, I mean it did once, but that s**t is so far above our pay grade it barely matters. The part that matters is that this..." He waved his hand around them at the empty shops and streets. "Could be Destiny City someday, if we don't figure out how to stop that from happening. And even I don't have the answers to that. I'm just... going out at night trying to stop there from being any more pointless deaths, any more life force fed to who knows what in the dark, whispering promises it won't deliver on. I'm just..." he shrugged. "I'm grateful you listened. I just wish I could do more for you."
