Location: Paris, France
Images:: x, x
General debriefing: There are some 185 miles of tunnels beneath Paris. Most are empty, some are occupied by ancient catacombs housing remains, and some have been repurposed by humans, both the wandering homeless and those engaging in (literally) underground activity.

Recent excursions by urban explorers and gossip among tight-knit homeless communities suggest strange activity in a private, closed-off area of the catacombs, including notably bizarre behavior among the thriving populations of resident rats and some rumored disappearances. Reports have grown frequent enough to warrant an investigation.
* C class difficulty level (must have a team of three, at least one of them must be an Intermediate Hunter. This is considered a DANGEROUS mission. )

MECHANICS

* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Survey Mission 6A. Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a BOSS ENCOUNTER, in which case the BATTLE PHASE begins. See below for battle phase mechanics.

1- 20: You find a pile of blankets and a bag of worn belongings suggesting that you've stumbled on a vagrant's sleeping place. There is a large quantity of dried, reddish brown stains, including a clearly-marked but streaked footprint and handprint on the floor, that lead to the edge of one of the underground canals, then disappear. Many of the smaller spatters are clearly the tiny pawprints of rats.
21 - 30: A rat scuttles out of a crossing in front of you. Its shadow seems... strange, in ways that you cannot explain. Should you choose for some reason to pursue it, you will find that it evades you entirely, and that your flashlight beam seems strangely less effective at penetrating the darkness in the tunnels where the rat flees.
31 - 40: A long, long line of French graffiti in black ink stretches along this corridor at shoulder height. If your character can speak French, they will find that it starts out with the lyrics to a tune currently popular on French radio, before taking a turn for the bizarre in the middle with random words (often "légion") inserted incorrectly, and then disintegrating into complete gibberish and random strings of letters before stopping suddenly mid-tunnel.
41 - 60: A bag of dried fruit and stale bread lies in a corner alongside an abandoned backpack that turns out, if examined, to contain supplies for impromptu urban exploration, but no identification. The dust is studded with dozens and dozens of rats' pawprints, but the food is entirely untouched.
61 - 80: You enter an area with a high, vaulted ceiling, full of a strange squishing, echoing sound. Something falls to the ground in the beam of your flashlight. It is a maggot. Should you decide to point your beam upwards, you will find the ceiling completely crawling with the same, all apparently hellbent on reaching small cocoon-like objects, roughly the size of a softball, strung thickly across the ceiling.
81- 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER:
- The sound of scrabbling paws is faint at first, but soon grows into a din punctuated with the chatter of many, many oversized teeth. The beast that manifests is a King Rat: a writhing mass of rodents joined by the tails, so that the teeth all face outwards. This is clearly a creature of FEAR, not of nature: each rat is substantially larger than the average dog, their beady eyes gleam bloodthirsty and manic, and the entire unit moves with a cohesiveness that suggests a hivemind at work. They (or it) fully block the tunnel ahead.

- BOSS MECHANICS: This boss is a mob that has collective 100 HP. Every time you attack it (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.

After Boss defeat:
When the final rat is slain, all the carcasses melt away. They leave, however, a scrap of evidence for you to take back to the labs for further research. Roll 1d4 to determine what is dropped
    1. A single, normal-sized rat skeleton, bound together with striped baker's twine and sealed with a Belgian postage stamp.
    2. A plastic baggie containing cigarette butts and bottlecaps. Shift the contents a bit and you will find that in the center of the litter is what appears to be a dead baby rat, hairless and pink--and still fresh.
    3. What appears to be a bit of fur but on closer examination turns out to be a dessicated rat head (normal sized). Someone or something has nailed a bit of yellow legal paper to it, but all that remains is a shred.
    4. A bundle of freshly-severed, normal-seeming rats' tails, bound together with what looks like an elastic baby's headband of pink lace.

* 2 mission reward points for completing this successfully

Leslie showed up on time. Early, even, if only by the skin of his ******** teeth. Jeans scuffed, boots worn, hood up, scowl, smoking: some things never changed.

They were going into the catacombs or some s**t, which gave him the ******** jitters. A mission was a mission, though, and just because they might remind him of the winding paths of Russia's bunker didn't give him an excuse to cop out. Cigarette clenched between his teeth, Leslie stuffed his bag with various things: headset, weighted chains, flares.

Pendant. Even if the stupid ******** thing was unreliable whenever he really needed it.

Leslie took a second to check on his assignment. Both familiar names, at least. Beanstalk and Barista, as it were. Good enough.

Chance showed up approximately two minutes after Leslie, dressed casually with one hand stuffed into the pocket of his jeans, the other one nursing what looked to be a travel mug of something. He looked as calm as ever for someone who was about to head off on his first external mission, and gave the scowling, short teenager a mild smile.

"Good morning," he said, by way of greeting, and took a sip from his mug. "You look chipper today, Leslie, as usual."

In the midst of his multi-week zen mode, Jack arrived without his coffee, which was equivalent to seeing a cat shaved, sunglasses on and set with blue accents (because he was being one cool ******** of course), and ghosted in more than he did walk. Despite knowing them both, he then took the time to pause, gently lower his glasses, look them both seriously in the eye, and then say, "I have you two on this mission? Well, rats."

He imagined his own YEAAAAAAAAAAAH in the background as he pushed his sunglasses back up and went to get his runic torch and bandages with unnecessary and imperious swagger.

"Because I've never heard that before," Leslie replied, sneering, zipping up his bag with great finality. It'd be too much to ask to do this s**t without constant lip.

(Never mind that half the lip would be coming from him. The rules obviously didn't apply to him. Duh.)

Jack's entrance nearly prompted a burst vein in his forehead. "Don't be such a c**t, Thompson." Leslie kicked at the back of his leg on his way to the portal, just hard enough to be annoying.

"It's a little early to be drunk, don't you think?" Leslie asked, stepping through the portal-- and smack dab into a dark, lurking corridor...

With a giant monster in front of him.

"God ******** damnit," he whined, "this s**t again?"

"Relax," said Chance, in a placating tone of voice to Leslie that indicated he was still relatively amused by the snark. "Don't get your panties in a wad so early in the morning, Leslie, you'll be uncomfortable. Isn't this supposed to be a nice, cheerful, non-painful mission?"

The sarcasm was heavy. He was still smiling benignly at Leslie when the third member of their little party arrived.

"Nice shades," was Chance's greeting remark to Jack, giving a little wave of the fingers not currently in his pocket. He took another sip from his mug, eyebrows raised, and tried to figure out if this was going to be a successful run or if all three of them would just wind up snipping back and forth at one another.

Probably the latter. Especially since the first thing they encountered upon stepping through the portal was a giant monster.

"What the ********, Leslie."

Chance downed the rest of his drink, tossed the mug aside (and lamented the loss of it, secretly), and summoned his weapon, the bow and arrow gleaming brightly in the dimly lit corridor. He notched an arrow and fired off a shot, which whistled through the darkness and embedded itself with a satisfying thunk into the creature's midst.

"Thompson? Sounds like you're the one who's been getting drunk." He snorted, grabbed his things, and saluted Chance with a lazy smile at the compliment. Jack remembered at the last second that the place they were heading to was underground, though, so said sunglasses would be redundant. Sigh. Such a waste for a locale like Paris, even if it did smell like ******** weed everywhere.

Slipping them into his coat pocket (he didn't trust the lab techs nearly enough to leave them behind), he followed after Chance and Leslie....and walked straight into the anomaly. He barked a laugh. "Looks like when you travel with a street rat, finding more isn't hard!" He grinned away and pretended the mass of teeth protruding from the conjoined creature didn't immediately make him wary. As Chance took his shot, the Lifer summoned his weapon and moved forward to hack at the thing's knot of tails, noting wryly how the Sun got to stay back while they had to go take the brunt of it.

"So! You two know each other?" he asked casually as an abnormally large rat gnawed on his jeans.

Leslie winced, rubbing at his eyes. Insomnia. He knew Jack's name was Hawthorn-- all over the charts in the infirmary. Mind didn't match with his mouth, he guessed.

Leslie dived out of the creatures' way, swearing all the while.

"Christ, every <********> time," he bitched, scrambling out of reach of a particularly vicious swipe. "And ******** you, Jack!"

Aleria solidified in his hand, primed and ready. The weight was starting to get comfortable, heavy and full of the promise to hurt. Leslie liked it. Diving forwards, he clobbered rat after rat with vicious purpose. But these bastards were just as cruel: teeth gnawed at his arms and legs, chewing through his shield.

"We're from the same town," was all Leslie offered with a shrug. "He ran some place I used to be a pain at."

"What a grand ole' party this is," Chance said mildly, in spite of the fact that the creature's teeth had sunk rather painfully into his arm. He resisted the urge to yell out, wincing visibly, and yanked his arm free, trying to drag an arrow into existence.

"Oh, we're old buddies, right Leslie?" he said with a smile, giving a wink in his direction. It was far from the truth, but that was beside the point. "We go way back, very close - ouch."

The rat had nipped at his leg. Chance kicked out at it and fired off another arrow.

"Let me remember...Ah, you mentioned a book store before?" Jack asked as he swatted the rat off and attempted to skewer it. The cut didn't go as far as anticipated, and his other arm became its meal. He bashed its nose with the hilt as if to say bad abomination of Fear and god only knows what else. "That's not where the porn mags are, Miller."

"Buddies," Leslie grunted, hefting his weapon high, bringing it down with a dull thwack against a skull, "not the ********' term I'd use, but we're okay or whatever." It was getting harder to focus on conversation; the lust for battle threaded through his bones, tightening into wicked glee. Aleria urged him on, eager for destruction. To be strong, to control, to triumph.

"They make porn mags?" he asked, trying to dodge an incoming strike and not-quite making it. "Seems like that's outdated as ********// 34

Chance let out a small wheeze of pain; the creature had snapped at his arm, and he'd nearly dropped his bow in the process. Asher made an annoyed sound inside of his head, not at his partner, but at the fact that Chance had gotten hurt at all.

"Yep, bookstore," he answered in a deadpan humor, threading an arrow against the wire of the bow. "Leslie here would come in to check out all the hot chicks, and myself, of course. I am, in fact, quite the catch."

Except not. Chance's fingers felt bruised as he pulled back the bowstring, but it released with a satisfying snap.

"Nothing with porn or pin up ever truly goes out of style."

Grunting, he bashed another gnashing rat mouth away and shook his hand out as he switched grips. ******** were a lot more durable than should have been allowed. Noting that Leslie was doing well enough on his own while Chance was struggling as the teeming mob drew close, Jack backed off from the main body long enough to slash at several mouths leering at the bowman and attracted their attention. Almost immediately they set upon him, and it became a struggle of blade against implausibly placed fangs that dragged against his shield.

"You sure it's the chicks he was scrabbling after?" he asked, eye twitching as several teeth tried to pierce through his clothes. "Preeeetty sure he takes it up the a** like you do, Bones."

Leslie sneered, thrown off balance by his sudden fury. "Oh, Jesus. Do not," he said forcefully, sidestepping to dodge a rat, "be disgusting."

Jack chimed in after that, and wasn't that terrible. There was no way he knew-- Abbi wouldn't have told anyone. She was too good for that.

"Don't project your faggotry on me, Hawthorn."

He used his burst of rage to whallop a rat, even as a few decided to swarm him afterwards. "I was going to heal one of you ********, but maybe I'll just heal my ******** self, christ."

"You wouldn't know how I take it - ow - now would you, Jack?" said Chance, swiping an arrow and thrusting it at the creature. It gave a whine and a growling shriek, snapping at his torso as he attempted to gain some more distance. A scraping of teeth dragged down his forearm, and Chance gave a wince, kicking out with one foot.

"But to be fair, I like it any way I get it," he said, flashing a lazy smile at the other two. Leslie's indignation was more amusing than anything else, and Chance pulled another arrow into existence, notching it against the bowstring with fumbling gestures.

"Also it's not disgusting unless you have something to hide," he added smilingly. "Which fortunately I don't."
