Keionx was a little uncomfortable in the plush, sprawling, elegant tree-hive that Alexin Flynnt called home. Their Lusus was less unnerving – Keionx was fine with big monstrous Lusii and beasts. She had, after all, been fighting them, helping them, and just generally around them her whole life, and the fact that Splitch had two heads bothered her not a jot. Beastdad had two bodies – two powerful, graceful bodies.

She was glad that the Commander had liked her idea. She needed more time to unravel the riddles on the letter, and in that time the people of Chittentown were thirsty. It would be unheroic to not do something about that, and to be unheroic for Keionx was the same as being nothing.

She smiled, pleased, at the barrels of water – some small, one large – that the two of them had managed to procure. This would slake the thirst of some of Chittentown's residents, at least for a little while. Soon, they would be delivered and distributed.

But for now... ”I appreciate thy food, Alexin.” she said happily. Often, Keionx ate whatever she could, often what she could catch, but the blueblood had access to some good food. Keionx appreciated the food. ”We shall be strong for the path ahead of us!”

Alexin wasn't the most perceptive of trolls, but she had picked up on Keoinx's unease about her hive. Whether it was a fear of heights (some of the hive was quite high) or just unease at being invited into a highblood's home (Alexin could understand that - if she were invited to a seadweller's hive, she'd be unnerved.) She'd tried her best to be a model host for Keoinx, even offering up some of the nice food - the comment about the food was met with a beaming smile as she adjusted her skirt. (Today was definitely a girl day.)

"Yes, I liked it too. Cooking can be fun, though it's always difficult at first.."

She wouldn't mention the first time she'd cooked by herself and almost set fire to the whole culinary block - but she'd got the hang of it eventually thanks to copious book reading. Splitch was just too big to come inside the hive and cook for her, and one could only stomach ration bars for so long....But we digress, the purpose of today was not food, but water. Four Fronds had a huge lake, but it would probably be a bad idea to steal water from seadwellers who lived there, so Alexin had rigged up a rain collector and sourced some from the rivers running through the forest instead. The results were impressive - a huge barrel that was far too heavy for the two kids (or even two teens) to lift that Splitch would carry, and then numerous smaller containers for the two kids to carry.

Alexin was a little worried that she wasn't going to be able to carry them, though. It wasn't that she didn't want to, but...well, she wasn't the strongest of trolls, that was all. But she'd do her best! For now she got busy attaching the big barrel to the straps that would enable Splitch to hook it in their talons and carry it easily whilst in the air - and attach the cushioning that meant when the lusus landed it wouldn't break. After this was done, she dusted herself off and began picking up some of the smaller containers until she reached what she considered her weight limit. (which was probably significantly less than Keoinx's!)

"Shall we be off then?"

Alexin was excited for this heroic journey!

Keionx even dusted off her table manners. She rarely used them at home, but Beastdad had taught her manners and, also, that they would be used around guests or hosts.

So there was no eating with her hands, when knife and fork would do, and no wiping on clothing, and – generally – good behavior. This was Commander Alexin Flynnt, after all.

Or, Keionx supposed, Commander-in-training? Eh. Commander suited them fine. Or... her? It was hard to tell with Alexin, and Keionx was glad that the chosen 'title/role' of Commander not only fit Alexin but came with absolutely not a single gender connotation because, for trolls, gender was hard. Whatever, Alexin looked good in a skirt in a way that Keionx envied. Or, rather, she envied their access to skirts. Kei, herself, had maybe three adventuring outfits, all very manly and practical, and all newly washed: A hero had to look not-disgusting, after all, and she'd managed to use Alexin's facilities while she had access to them.

Normally, her meal finished and her heroic delivery of water to Chittentown ready to be transported, Keionx would be completely ready to go on this mighty (sub) adventure.

”A brief moment, mine Commander.” she said.

She had another point of business, one she wanted to discuss with her 'Commander', and she wasn't sure when she would next have the chance to talk to them privately about it.

She fumbled in her pocket for the letter, creased and recreased, it's emerald green ink slightly smudged from constant perusal.

”I was shown this letter...” she said, pushing it over the table, ”By a friend of my friend, Vremea the elegant...”

The sane part of her hoped that appelation would not get Vremea in trouble.

”I hath reason to believe 'tis a piece of the great puzzle of Chittentown... It's arrival is timely,” she explained, ”And it's riddles mysterious...” She moved back to let Alexin take a look at it her/themselves. ”What thinkst thou? A lead, mayhap?”

Alexin had noticed Keionx's table manners, and whilst she hadn't commented directly on them, she had been silently impressed - after all, despite Keionx's noble intentions, she was in fact, a lowblood, and therefore prone to the foibles of her kind. But so far Alexin had noticed none of these foibles she usually associated with lowbloods - that was, Keionx wasn't dirty or rude or sneaky or a thief. In fact, Alexin was starting to wonder if she'd misjudged lowbloods as a whole - after all, that Sinter fellow had been pleasant too!

Gender was hard. Alexin could attest to that. Some days were girl days and some days were boy days and somedays they were stuck in a state of flux. Those days were the /worst/. Thankfully, there wasn't much pressure on trolls as a whole to stick to a single gender, though Alexin thought the label 'bigender' fit them well.

Alexin paused as Keionx spoke, and looked at the note curiously.

"Bizarre..it does look like an interesting puzzle. And written in jade ink... A lead well worth pursuing!"

Then, rifling through her pockets, she drew out her own note.

"I got an imperial decree stuck to my door, so I guess I'll be heading along to that, though. Serve thy Empress, and all!"

She showed Keoinx the note, which was indeed very official, and beamed at the thought of her being potentially useful to the Empress.

Keionx took the note in hand and looked it over, thoughfully. A similar thing had appeared on Ephias's door when she had checked in not too long before. ”Mmm... A missive. A call to service...” She handed the note back to Alexin, ”But, I fear, I... We...” she corrected herself, ”Cannot pursueth both.”

Keionx thought for a moment, and a moment more, looking at the two letters. ”The mysterious letter hath merit, but... doth thou thinkst...” she hesitated, ”Doth thou wish me to go with thee, Commander?” she asked, looking up to meet Alexin's gaze, ”I... want to see what lieth at the end of these riddles...” she said, ”To see if it is the key to what is happening in Chittentown... however...” she fidgeted with her cup of water, rotating it around and around, ”If thou thinkst I should go with thee and the army, then I will go.”

Alexin was touched by Keoinx's offer, but she shook her head, smiling at the other.

"There's no point the two of us pursuing the same path. You don't send your best to the same location - you surround the enemy. Both paths seem worthy of merit - if you shall pursue the jade letter, I shall report to the queen."

Alexin then hitched up her water container slightly, shuffling awkwardly as she struggled to process the emotions that Keoinx had brought to the fore with her offer. Camradrie, perhaps - whatever the positivity was, it was quite foreign to Alexin, who was used to looking down upon lowbloods, not wanting to be allies with them. Still, Alexin mused, Keoinx was certainly worthy of Allyship, even if she was a lowblood. Bah, she was overthinking things. Why should it matter if she was friends with a lowblood? Many cross-spectrum friendships were acceptable, after all. Yeah? Yeah!

But for now....

"But for now perhaps, we should deliver this water!"

Keionx was, to put it honestly and bluntly, relieved. If she was commanded by Alexin she would follow their commands wherever they led – that was the role that Keionx had decided on for her ally, the hero who was not a knight but who sought to be a leader. Keionx was glad, though, that the answer she was given was the answer she had wanted.

She stood and saluted. ”Then I shall pursue this letter, wherever it may leadeth.” she said, in what – for any other troll – would be a very theatrical tone of voice. ”And then, mayhap, we shall compare our journeys” she said, hopeful, ”It may be that they are a part of some greater aim we doth not see yet.”

Keionx hitched up her water containers and rolled her shoulders. She was carrying a lot more than Alexin, which did not bother her at all because she honestly enjoyed carrying things. She waited for Splitch to be readied, and grinned.

”Indeed! Let us deliver the water to yon thirsty citizens!” she said, enthusiastically.

And, with a jaunty heft of her load, they were off...
