In the library outside of Inhinx, Lenore flipped the page of the book she was reading, smiling softly at her puff of breath lingering in the air. She used to amuse herself on the trip up by breathing warm air into the frigid landscape, marveling at the visible cloud it produced.
She looked up from her book at her friends that were with her - although no one was saying anything, it was fun to be with everyone. She looked back down at her book just in time to hear a thump. Looking back up, she found that everyone's attention was on Elesh Norn - the darkrai had collapsed.
Lenore quickly got out of her chair and went to the side of the legendary pokemon. "...Ellie?"

With the exception of Jin-Gitaxias, the other pokemon gathered around the darkrai, whose breathing was shallow. The gengar stared on from afar, quietly analyzing the situation as Lenore shook the darkrai. "Ellie? Ellie! Wake up!" Silence fell over the room as the darkrai refused to stir.
Breaking the silence, Jin-Gitaxias spoke. "We've seen something similar before, but affecting someone else." He stared pointedly at Lenore as the other pokemon ducked their heads. The girl's eyes widened as she realized what the gengar was implying, and she shook her head furiously. "No! Ellie's fine! She's just tired, or something!" She turned back to the unconscious darkrai desperately. "Right, Ellie?!"
Mephistopheles stared back at Jin-Gitaxias and shook his head. "That can't be the case. It only happened to Lenore because of our pact. Elesh Norn has made no pact with me, or any other member of the Legion. It would be impossible to form a pact with a pokemon."

Jin-Gitaxias shrugged lightly. "Whatever the case, the symptoms are the same. The darkrai is probably dying."
Before Lenore could protest, a calm voice cut her off. "He's right." Elesh Norn slowly opened her eyes as she spoke. "I've often wondered how the price for my power worked, as it always seemed random, but now I believe I know how it works - it depends on what I wish for. If I wish for something nice to happen, the price is that I can't fully enjoy it." Tears welled in the darkrai's eyes. "It's kind of a cruel trick, isn't it? No matter what I do with the power, I can't benefit fully. It finally occurred to me - the reason why the price last time was my voice, and why I can speak now." She looked at Lenore sadly. "I come from another world," She began, "A world where you and I were friends. But you died, and I wished to be able to see and talk to you again. I was sent here, but without the ability to speak. I got it back when you died, because it no longer mattered if I could or couldn't speak. Then you came back, but even that was the result of me wishing you were still here. So, the price for wishing you were still here is that I can't be."
Tears welled in Lenore's eyes. "Then -"
Elesh Norn cut her off sternly. "I have no intention of taking back my wish. Even if I did, there's no guarantee we'd get a better future than this one." She closed her eyes, and the tears dropped down the side of her face. "I have to go."

The tears streamed down Lenore's face, and even the other pokemon were saddened by the girl's display. Elesh Norn frowned slightly. "Lenore, I'm sorry, but this is the way it has to be." Lenore shook her head and cried out. "No, it's not! You didn't have to go so far for me! All this time, you've been here for me, and I never once thanked you, never understood what you went through for me! I've been a terrible friend - it can't end like this!" The girl choked as a sob racked her small frame, and the darkrai smiled.
"It is fine, Lenore. Thank you for being my friend, in that world, and this one." She paused as Lenore continued to cough/cry, and closed her eyes. "It hurts to lose someone you care about. I know that all too well. I won't have you suffer like I did."
Lenore froze up as the runes on Elesh Norn's body began to glow. "What are you doing...?" The darkrai smiled as her resolution grew. "What I have to. I don't want you to miss me, Lenore. You won't remember me,-" "No, Ellie!" Lenore screamed. "None of the others will remember me,-" "Don't!" "No one in this world will remember that I existed." "Please! I don't want this!" "Good bye, Lenore. Thank you for being my friend." "ELLIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEE!"
The runes' light expanded until it seemed to swallow the world in its glow. When it ended, Lenore and her pokemon were standing around nothing. Jin-Gitaxias blinked. "...What are you all gathered over there for?" The other pokemon blinked and shook their heads, confused. Why were they gathered over there? They separated. As Mef turned to go, Lenore grabbed him by the hand. "Lenore?"
Tears welled in her eyes, but she didn't know why. "Hey, Mef? Wasn't there someone here with us?" The dusknoir shook his head. "No, why?" The girl dropped his hand silently. "I don't know, I just feel like there were eight of us." She went back to read her book as the tears streamed down her face.
For some reason, she felt like she had forgotten something incredibly important.
