Quote:
Underwater Observation Post

Not for the claustrophobic, this is a station submerged underneath the island that floats along with it. Shaped like a giant metal pill, one side is metal, and houses the portal, readout equipment, a console full of observation monitors, and a few pieces of comfort such as a table, chairs, and books. The other half is made of thick, clear plastic, allowing a full and unobstructed view of the local underwater life.

In the distance, it's not unusual to notice massive shapes moving in the distance, and it's the purpose of this station to keep an eye for any of these, or anything else unusual, coming too close to the island. The Island of Deus Ex Machina floats quietly along the edges between this world and that of Halloween, and with that comes certain, calculated, risks.

Duty work was always a chore, but it was a nice chore to sort your thoughts out while still appearing productive on paper. It also let you get out of the lab, and it looked good on a hunter's worksheet that he wasn't dodging the basic duties each hunter was expected to do.

Melvin stretched, holding a cup of coffee from the labs before stepping through he portal and into the round room that was the underwater base. He was having a late breakfast and had gotten some granola bars from the vending machine before coming to the lighthouse for work.

There were two chairs sitting for observation of the giant glass window and he moved in to take a seat, taking a long sip from his cup and glad for it. If there was one thing he could rely on, it was that the labs always had a working coffee machine – even if it wasn't the best coffee.

Horace had heard things about submarine duty. Namely that if he was lucky, he'd get stuck with a hunter who bathed regualrly (or be alone entirely, which was preferable) and that he'd be bored. It was close quarters, and lots of blue water and nothing else. So, in preperation, Horace had dragged out a copy of Romancing Mister Bridgerton to while away the time. The cover was unfortunately a distinctly feminine light purple with large, clean lettering. But Horace liked happy endings, and if romance novels had one thing going for them, it was the guarantee of a happy ending.

He stepped through the portal with a yawn, wearily wondering if maybe today he should've braved that prototype coffee pot from Life. The coffee had gone back to a mostly normal color, but it bubbled alarmingly. Recently, he hadn't even tried it - it seemed like a waste of actual coffee grounds. The absence of caffeine gave me some godawful headaches though. He popped his shoulder and looked around the room. Ah, not alone today.

"Hello," he said, swinging into the chair next to the other man. "I'm Horace. Horace Nokoni." A beat, and then, with clear longing in his voice. "Where did you get that coffee?"

The Semblance of Unity

Melvin turned in his seat to look at the man as he threw himself into his seat. "Melvin. Melvin Wood." He responded back, finding Nokoni to be a very odd and foreign name. He wondered what background that tied to, but left it alone for now.

Looking down at his mug, he took a pleased sip just for show. (Life coffee was never top shelf after all. Lifers would sooner drink out of unmarked beakers than share their personal staff of coffee.) "From the Life Labs." He said, not at all specifying where. It was to every Lifers credit to have unpaid guinea pigs try a cup of coffee that was a decoy for free experimentation. He had even started to partake in the act himself. You couldn't really get people to come into a lab and drink or eat anything unless you disguised it. Like dogs eating medicine inside cheese.

"There are plenty of coffee pots in the labs. I can show you some." He said with a sweet smile before looking out at the water and taking another sip. "Tired?" He asked.

The way Melvin enjoyed his coffee was positively torture. Well, not exactly, but to a caffeine-starved boy, it sure was close. He sighed and resolutely looked away for a long moment, although his leg began to bounce up and down restlessly. He looked back at the other man curiously. somebody had told him not to trust Life (both the division and the state of being, he supposed). Dark shapes moved in the water far, far away from them both - things with too many tentacles, maybe. It was hard to tell and easy for eyes to trick themselves from that distance. He looked back at the composed man next to him.

"Actually, I got a prototype coffee pot from them, but it turned some coffee purple and well... it bubbles alarmingly. Didn't seem entirely safe to put in my body, after all." Horace shrugged ruefully. He would risk a lot for coffee, but there was still a limit. Clearly, he'd have to get a regular one altered or something. "I feel like I'm always a bit tired, lately - not quite used to the island life, I guess. Makes me long a bit too much for caffeine," he openly admitted. Coffee, tea, even caffeine pills would be alright. Horace supposed it was better to just let his body adjust to life without it, but still.

"Are you a part of Life, Melvin?"

The Semblance of Unity

He continued to drink his coffee. Even if he wanted to share, which he didn't, he wouldn't want to share his mug with a complete stranger who's dental hygiene was in question as of this moment. He wasn't exactly close enough to examine.

"If you don't want to risk it, leave the pot out for someone willing to take the chance. I'd like to know the result. Not all effects are bad ones. For all you know, it could be super concentrated coffee to the point that it keeps you energized without the side effects of a crash." He smiled again at that idea, knowing from experience that the ratio of that happening was very small. Most of the time lips swells up, warts sprouted and grew faces, and branches came out of armpits. The risk was not worth the reward in terms of Life coffee sometimes.

"Yes, I'm in Life." He sat up a moment to show his jacket before tucking the pristine coat behind him and sitting back down. "If you want, take a coffee pot you like and get it runiced in one of the runic labs. They charge a pretty penny but it's better than begging for used grounds somewhere else." He took another sip of his drink and looked as slender shape devoid of fins moved slowly in the distance, faint stripes glowing down its body before it flashed red and slipped away into the distance.

"And you? What division are you in?"
PostPosted: Wed Dec 17, 2014 6:52 pm

Horace seemed to be deep in thought for a moment. "Or the 'coffee' could make them grow tentacles or a third eye." Tentacles could probably be useful, depending on their location, elasticity/strength, and precision of control. A third eye not as much, unless it allowed the possessor to see heat signatures or.... x-ray vision. Or something. "...maybe I will leave the coffee out." There was only one small, blond Life hunter that he would particularly like to drink it - in the interests of science, of course. Considering the lack of laws on the island, Horace imagined some hunters got away with a great many things as long as it was labeled 'research'. Digging in his pocket, he pulled out his notebook and jotted down those few thoughts down in quick, neat shorthand.

"Oh, I'm in Death. Fortunately, not as morbid as it sounds. Paperwork division and all that." Idly, he snapped one of the plastic bracelets on his wrist. "Who thought up the names of the division, I wonder... And, sadly, I haven't enough money to get anything at all runic'd. I'm so fresh and clean that I haven't gotten paid yet. I need to find more income, though." Horace thought of Jan and the nice places, nice expensive places that would fit Jan like some odd glove.

"I want to take my friend somewhere nice on leave. I owe him." For some reason, this window to the ocean did not bother Horace. Perhaps because it was more like looking into a large aquarium. He turned to Melvin. "So how long have you been on the island? Long enough for coffee, at least."

"Yes. That has been known to happen." He said with a shrug of his shoulders before he took another sip of coffee. "Depends if you feel it's worth the risk."

"Paperwork division sounds nice. I think most of us have our fair share of it, but better than trying to beat equipment into working or waiting to use a machine." He said with a sigh. Labs were aggressive places where the demand of working equipment was higher than the supply.

"I've been here over a year. Probably 2 at this point. I loose track. Sometimes it feels I've been here longer, but living even one year feels like 10 I guess." It was a mixed blessing.

"I'm still not a full hunter though, which will be nice when I can have my own room, shower, and kitchen."

"Have you been on many missions before?" He asked, rising from his seat a moment when something whaled in the distance but died down. It was too far to be concerned - for now.

"I love paperwork, to be honest. It's nice knowing that every bit of information can be neatly slotted away, has its own place," he said happily. Before school had soured, people would pay him to write their papers and organize their works cited page. One senior had even paid him an oddly heftly sum to write, address, and send their graduation notices. It was from these things alone that Horace had any money at all. And he still hadn't been shopping for Christmas.

Horace dragged his ankle onto the opposite knee, orange sneaker bouncing. "Hmm, I guess life expectancy dramatically changes once you come to the island. I guess I'm too new to have any ambitions beyond continuing to live." He looked at his nails, short and filed neatly. Sighing, he rubbed them along his thighs; since he'd starting maintaining them, he couldn't bring himself to ruin it by chewing on them like he used to.

"I've only been on one mission - in Russia. I didn't die, so that's good." Horace shrugged and clicked the barbell in his tongue against his teeth. "Why - have you done quite a lot?"

The Semblance of Unity

He hadn't expected that type of question, and he only looked down into the dwindling contents of his cup. "No. I haven't." He said, voice just above a whisper.

His accomplishments had been that he had done work that wasn't appreciated by a superior who only wanted to use them or didn't want to see him at all. He had no friends anymore but a small handful that he couldn't open up fully to, and the worst accomplishment of all was that he left his girlfriend get lost to some other realm.

In all his years here, living was about the only good thing that could be said, and probably only in his opinion. He was sure there were other people who would think differently.

"It's a work in progress." He said, taking another slow sip. "I hope to change that soon."

He looked back at Horace. "Did you work in an office before coming here? You seem to like the paperwork."
PostPosted: Sat Dec 20, 2014 8:34 am

Horace frowned slightly at Melvin's tone. Maybe Life didn't get around to missions very often and he had somehow wounded the other man's pride. It did seem to be a very prideful sort of island, thus far. Kind of exhausting, really. "Too busy researching for most missions, I guess." It wasn't a bad thing - someone had to research. And Horace rather thought that perhaps the smartest minds should stay mainly on the island. At Melvin's next question, he shrugged and tucked his hair behind one ear.

"Nah, I'm only seventeen. Worked at an amusement park every summer and used to write people's papers and stuff during the school year. I just like the... the sense of organization, you know?" Something flickered far away in the ocean. If monsters were real, there was likely kraken and evil giant angler fish. "But I'd have liked to eventually become a secretary or something. What'd you do before coming here?"

"17?" He repeated, leaning back and looking the boy over. "They keep going younger. There are a few hunters who look 16 and are in their twenties, but 17? They could have at least....given you some time before....all this." He said, gesturing to the pod window that showed shadows moving in the dark depths.

Horace hadn't even had a chance to graduate, to really experience his full childhood, and now he was facing the same traumas and destruction that even older men shouldn't have to deal with. It was why they didn't let teenagers join the army until a certain age.

Sighing, he finished his coffee and set it down on the ground beside his chair. "I hoped to work in parasitology, the science behind parasites in order to get rid of them. I ...had a interest in viruses and bacteria too. Things that originally were unseen by the human eye until proven real with advancing science. I hoped to prove a few things and eliminate a few others in my life. Then I was asked to take this opportunity to get some answers no one else had, and I thought I couldn't live knowing I passed that opportunity."

He thought of all he gave up - and all that was taken.

He looked back at Horace. "Was your home life bad?"
PostPosted: Mon Dec 22, 2014 11:47 am

"Mmm, well, I can't say I miss my high school, really." He shrugged and listened with interest as Melvin talked. The fields of science he had studied didn't seem as though they'd be applicable here, sadly. Though, he guessed that monsters brought their own brand of disease. When Melvin asked about his home life, he stiffened slightly and quashed the urge to touch the line of cigarette burns along his collar bone. That wasn't 'home life' anyway. Instead he smiled and forced out a chuckle. "Nothing of the sort. I just did not have a reason to stay. How does parasitology translate into Deus stuff? If it does, that is." He saw the empty coffee cup and sighed wistfully before looking back up at Melvin.

Something in the man's voice had given him pause, and his gaze turnd sharply curious. "Do you regret it then - coming here?"

"That's better than most. I find many people I ask came from bad lives back home and left. Seems you got to leave without any regrets." He assumed out loud.

"Oh, it doesn't. I wasn't in college long to learn any specifics in my field, but I did take classes in biochemistry, but really I didn't get to use any equipment or learn enough before coming here. Even if I did, half the equipment is specialized for Deus and Fear studies. So really, college didn't do much for me. I'm still learning special fields here on Deus. Right now I'm specializing in Runic Studies."

As for the question, he too fell silent a moment. "I would regret it either way. I miss my family every day. I also am guilty of causing them pain when I left. I know they probably blame themselves for my fake death. But I don't think I could continue knowing I passed up the chance to get answers. I think I would go nuts if I kept thinking that I missed my chance."

He sighed and looked back over at Horace. "So damned if I did. Damned if I didn't."
PostPosted: Wed Dec 24, 2014 10:40 am

"And have the answers you've found here been worth it?" He peered intently at Melvin for a moment and then laughed lightly, waving the question away.

"I think everybody has regrets, of a sort. People left behind or places. Things you might've said but weren't allowed to." He shrugged, a sort of wistfulness passing briefly over his features. Horace couldn't say he missed things, not yet, not while he was still new and overwhelmed by the sheer amount of everything he had to process. But he knew his grandmother missed him, even though her life would be easier without him. Idly, he wondered what the kids in school had thought. He hoped they felt awful.

He tapped his fingers along his pocket. "Runics studies? Is that making runic stones and stuff? Forgive my not knowing - still got a lot of information to digest." He grinned a little sheepishly. Horace hated not knowing things, and he was well aware that asking questions made him look a little stupid sometimes. But if he didn't ask, he wouldn't know.

I can help wrap it. Just have them get ready to go.

"I don't think anything is worth giving up a long life of being comfortable and not having people relying on you with life or death situations. I don't even think I got any of the answers that would make it all feel worth] it, but there is no turning back now. I'm only hoping I find them in the end. Something."

He shrugged, not wanting to let himself fall down into the depths of those thoughts again. It would be hard dragging himself out again.

"Yes. I dive for the stones and then work on carving them. I'm not the best yet, but I'm getting better each week. I think I'm getting nearly perfect stones each time." He smiled, glad for the subject chance. "I…like getting away and having time to think. It's good to just…focus on something like that. Work with my hands."

He checked his watch and then rose up, pressing his hands to the small of his back and arching to work the strain on his back. "Shifts pretty much done. Another uneventful aquarium shift."
