Paolo had no idea where he was. He knew that he had been washed away from the flock territory several months ago. He knew that he had woken up on the shore and began walking in some direction hoping it would take him back to the flock. Instead he had ended up on some beach, met an unusual trinket making stallion, and then headed north since there was no physical way to head south unless he learned how to swim suddenly. That had been nearly a month ago and now Paolo had found himself deep within the trees staring at a rotten stump wondering why he hadn’t just followed the river back up stream when he had woken up. He had wanted to find Quadrille… but surely she’d had the sense to do exactly what he had failed to do. Quadrille was a hunter, a survivor. Paolo was little more than an ornament with pretty words and a warm heart and hide.
He couldn’t survive on his own, especially not here. Somehow he had managed to wander into the heart of a sickened wood. The pale trees were rotted to their very cores and the only thing thriving in the environment seemed to be beetles and other insects.

Cordelia was completely and utterly dumbfounded. She had brought herself into the most remote reaches of the forest into a section of sickly trees that no one in their right mind would venture into and yet somehow people kept happening upon her sanctuary. It was as though there was no place that she could go to get some peace and quiet. First there was the duo of deer, then the basket that had been left to die, and then came the little lost doe, and then the stuffed rabbit ripping at the seams had followed. And now… now there was some bizarre clawed unicorn staring forlornly at a stump of all things. Cordelia bristled like a pinecone and her eyes blazed fiercely. She had had enough of this nonsense. It was high time that people got the message that she was to be left alone.
“Get out!” She shrieked indignantly storming towards the stallion like a blizzard. “You are not welcome here! Leave! Be gone! Get out of these woods and leave me in peace!” She continued on her tirade. Her heart began to beat faster and the cloth collar around her neck began to feel a little too warm for her liking.

Paolo jumped with a start at the sudden, and furious, appearance of the mare. If his voice had not caught in his throat he would have screamed like a tiny, scared mouse. He was half convinced that the approaching figure was death personified. Her eyes glowed a violent shade of purple and he could see the faint pattern of bones on her coat. It wasn’t until she started demanding that he leave that he relaxed somewhat. It was not death coming to claim him but a mare that looked like death that probably wanted to kill him if he didn’t flee immediately.
Paolo wanted to run. He really did but as it turned out the boggy ground that he had jumped onto in his fright did not want to let go of his feet. He tugged against the muck but the more he pulled the harder it seemed to fight to keep him captive. Paolo finally found his voice enough to whimper.

Cordelia couldn’t find the words or even the thoughts to express the exasperation she was feeling at the moment. She had managed to scare the trespasser just like she had wanted to. Unfortunately, in his fear, he had jumped directly onto a bit of boggy ground and gotten stuck. If there had ever been an appropriate time to swear and beat her head into a tree, this was it.
Instead she stared at the stuck stallion for a long time before loudly shouting, “You’re an idiot!”

Paolo couldn’t disagree with the mare’s assessment for two reasons. The first reason was that she was right, he was being an idiot, and the second was that he was simply too frightened of her to say anything to the contrary. Instead he found himself nodding his head as he continued to tug helplessly at his feet. He was stuck all the way to the knee now but there was some good news, if he wiggled his talons just so he could ever so slightly scrape the solid ground that lay beneath the bog that was sucking him down. It would probably reach up to his chest and while the thought of having muck coating him so high up was unpleasant he could rest easier knowing that he wasn’t going to die. With any luck he might actually be able to walk himself out once he got a good grip on the ground beneath.
Less comforting was the fact that the mare would still be there whenever he finally managed to hit bottom and push free. He had to try and keep her from just attacking him somehow. He was only really good at one thing and while he didn’t think she’d respond too favorably he had to at least give it a shot.
“It seems we may have some time to kill here.” He said softly offering up his best meek smile. “I thought… I should apologize for intruding. I did not mean to disturb you, my lady, I would never do something of that sort intentionally.” He did what he could to meet her eyes but now that she had stopped charging at him they seemed mostly concealed behind her hair.

As Cordelia was busy fuming she noticed that the stallion’s panic seemed to be ebbing away. For a brief moment the childish notion of lashing out and kicking him in the head seemed quite pleasant but she quickly put that desire to bed. It would help nothing and, to be honest, she wasn’t even sure that she could reach him without falling into the muck herself. Before long the stallion had calmed enough to speak actual words, up until this point Cordelia hadn’t even been sure that he would know how. With what he was saying Cordelia wished dearly that he’d kept quiet. She was no spring filly; she could recognize an attempt at buttering her up when she heard it. Unusual embellishments like “my lady” could be nothing but an attempt to make her feel fondness for him. And she could see him looking to make eye contact. Cordelia snorted and turned her head away, that wouldn’t work either. She didn’t want anyone near her or even trying to get near her at this point.
“I accept your apology.” She replied icily giving him absolutely nothing else to latch on to. If he was hoping to find some common ground she wasn’t going to give him any clues. She glanced down a trail that she often traveled. If she took that she could be free of him and he could just talk himself into a stupor. She lifted one hoof to do precisely that but stopped before taking a step. If she left he might die. There was no telling how far he could sink in that thing. She scowled, whirled around, and settled in to watch. If he sunk up to his neck she would help, if he stopped sinking she would leave. She could stay quiet through the duration of the encounter if it helped.

She hadn’t left and Paolo took that as a good sign. The way she replied to him said ‘stop talking’ but she had still stayed put. Maybe she liked the track he was going on. He smiled slightly then paused. Or perhaps she disliked him so much that she wanted to watch him drown. Well that was an unpleasant thought. He had heard it said that endearing yourself to your captors would make it harder for them to kill you. He hoped that was true now more than ever.
“My name is Paolo.” He said with a smile hoping that this would actually work. If he was all wrong he might get out of the mess only to find himself being hunted down by a pissed off mare with lightning for eyes. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d been chased down but normally it was other stallions after him and not mares.

For a brief shining moment it looked like maybe she had managed to silence him just by being her usual charming self. She was wrong. He had stopped with the weird flourishes but it seemed he hadn’t gotten the message that she wasn’t interested in being friends. Trying to make that point more clear she tossed her bangs out of her mind and gave him her best ‘I wish you death’ glare. Her mother had often said that she was good at making such faces, although the exact phrasing had circled around the concept of Cordelia ceasing to glare. That never quite panned out.

Paolo’s ears flattened against his head at the look she gave him and he coughed nervously. This was clearly not a mare that he could easily win over. Really Paolo wasn’t sure if she was capable of being won over at all. She seemed rather content to watch him struggle and glare him into silence. If he wasn’t mistaken he was only making things worse by trying to speak with her. It wasn’t good because he could feel, more or less, solid ground beneath all of his feet again.
He looked the mare over uneasily. There was no way this would end well for him. He could run for it, but the muck would almost certainly slow him down seeing as it had taken it upon itself to swallow up most of his body. She would likely see him moving before he made it out and could easily wait for him wherever he tried to emerge. Winning her over with charm hadn’t worked and wouldn’t work; he’d have to try a different tactic if he wanted to get out alive.
“Miss…” He said quietly grasping at thin air for ideas. “Iiiiii think I saw something over there!” His words came out all at once but that they came out at all seemed to be a small miracle. “In those trees behind you!” He gestured his head wildly toward an area behind her and began praying that she believed him.

Every single time that Cordelia thought she’d finally managed to silence the stallion for good he started talking again. This time was different though. Before, he had been all charm and casual conversation and clarity. Now he was babbling frantically to the point that his words were blurring together. Cordelia looked around a few times then back to the stallion. She couldn’t tell if he was actually panicked about something in the trees behind her or just a really poor liar.
She found herself staring at him intensely as she weighed her options. If he was telling the truth that meant that someone else had invaded her home, again. If he was lying then he was just trying to distract her from something. What exactly he wanted to distract her from was anyone’s guess. He was sinking, possibly to his death, and he wanted her to leave. Did he want to die alone? It wasn’t even clear that he would die yet but if he was giving up did it really matter to her? Cordelia frowned, how had this day turned into a moral dilemma?
Heaving a sigh she turned away from the bog. “I will return in just a moment.” She said icily knowing that others would have gone for reassuring. Cordelia just didn’t want to deal with these choices. She just wanted him gone. Moving with purpose, Cordelia headed into the trees to do a quick check for the presence of others. Then she would return and see if she could find a way to help ‘Paolo’ out of the muck and out of her hair.

It had worked! Sort of. Exactly how much she believed of what he said was yet to be determined, but to Paolo it didn’t matter. All that mattered was that the mare was leaving, maybe not for long but hopefully for long enough. As soon as her back was turned he started moving slowly towards the edge of the bog. The ground sloped up towards the edge of the muck and the higher he climbed the easier his struggle became. He kept checking over his shoulder to see if the mare had returned yet.
Luck seemed to be on his side because once he was back on fully solid ground the mare was still nowhere in sight. Paolo would have let out a whoop of joy if he hadn’t feared that mare coming back so much. Instead he turned tail and fled in the opposite direction trying to put as much distance between himself and that nightmare as he could. The Flock was definitely not in that direction. He’d make sure to stay far, far away from that forest in the future.

Cordelia didn’t waste much time checking the area for other creatures, it was clear nothing had come this was except for her and the stallion for quite some time. True to her word Cordelia turned around and headed back with all due haste. She stopped short of breaking out of the line of trees when she saw that the stallion had half pulled himself out of the mess he was in already. So that’s what he had been up to. Cordelia didn’t even mind that he had tricked her away, he was leaving and that’s all she wanted so she stayed silent and hidden. All in all she was simply content to watch him flee and once she was certain he wouldn’t be coming back she headed off to resume her normal life. One thing was certain, he wouldn’t be coming back.
