Demons are typically thought of to be harmful, demonic, and all around unpleasant. Though is is generally true, there are some demons, though rare, that have given up some of their demonic instincts.
Demons are most commonly found in Makai, otherwise known as the "Demon World". They often take the appearance of humanoid creatures, but can come in a variety of other forms. Some with wings that can be hidden at will, others like YuugenMagan that can be seen as near unidentifiable beings. Though they mostly reside in Makai, some of them can be found in the outside world, often times watching over humans or possessing them for various, odd reasons.
Demons were shaped by Shinki to resist the hazardous nature of Makai. In this light, they have a very high regeneration rate that allows them to offset the land's toxic miasma. At the very same time, their body was toughened so that the regeneration wouldn't have to kick in every second or so, making demons much more durable than a human.
Most demons have a lot of strength, and could easily punch through a brick wall. However, some prefer to focus on magic instead, like Mai or Gengetsu, forgoing their physical abilities to a certain extent or just not training them.
As per the nature of their environment, having absorbed the miasma all their life, demons tends to have a very high affinity to magic. Demons, like most residents of Makai, were created in Makai by the Goddess Shinki. Their purpose is largely unknown besides just being residents of this odd realm. However, it can be thought that causing trouble may have also been a reason.
