Calanthe needed out. The energy inside her home, the Great Tree Laisidhiel, was so thick it was stifling. She'd emerged from her cocoon feeling refreshed and renewed, with a spirit of new life flowing through her. And then she'd seen what had happened while she was safely tucked away. A huge hole in the side of the Tree. Many injured pae'il. And a deep, deep fatigue that had settled like a thick blanket over all who lived here.

She couldn't handle it any more.

Early in the morning, Calanthe slipped out of the living space she and Mother shared. The space had been created just for Mother, before Calanthe had come along, but it had worked fine for an adult and a small child. Calanthe had gotten bigger, so much bigger, since emerging from her cocoon, and the small apartment just wasn't large enough for her and Mother. She needed to stretch her wings a bit, take up all the space she could.

Security had been tightened, understandably, since the incident in the Tree, but Calanthe was able to cheerfully bid the guards good morning as she walked out. It seemed like nobody really knew what to do with her, winged as she was, but some of the other Fauns had wings also, so mostly people just shrugged it off as some variation. The guards nodded politely to her as she walked by.

Calanthe crossed the rope bridge to the main island. It seemed like forever since she'd done this. Mother had some farm plots out this way, but the growing season was over, and Mother hadn't seemed like herself lately either. Perhaps she'd bring some fresh greens back with her when she returned. Maybe that would boost Mother's spirits, even just a little.

"Now if I remember right..." she muttered to herself, pausing and looking down at the path. There was a weed that grew around here, she remembered. It was minty when you chewed it. She crouched down, trying to remember where she'd seen it. --Aha! She scooted a few feet more down the path and plucked the plant. It had four or five fat leaves. Calanthe stood up and put one of the leaves into her mouth and chewed gently. The taste and smell was so refreshing! She wondered if she could make an infusion with enough of these leaves.

She continued down the path, feeling better and breathing easier the further away from the hurting Tree she got. She saw someone coming and eeped, scuttling to the side of the path and hiding behind a tree.

When Foxglove had emerged, he didn't know what to make of his situation. It was one thing to wake up and find yourself completely different then what you once were, it was another to find your family had been turned upside down at the same time. His mother was missing. That's what he had gained from everyone. His silent sister had taken some work to open up- something about their mom being possessed? Stabbing Dad and running away? Possessed? What did it even mean?

He didn't feel right. The structure of his body wasn't the same, he finally gained wings like his siblings, and he was hungry. So incredibly hungry. He didn't recall very clearly what had happened to him- Sprinklebutt (his doting name for his sister) had said he ate till he dropped then he made himself a pod like structure before... leaving them? She had said it with such bitterness he didn't understand. He didn't leave them did he? He'd been there all along just... asleep.

They weren't close like they once were. Sprinklebutt spent a ton of time away from the house as did their Dad. He was thankful his Dad trusted them home alone, but it was hard. He could see the tiredness in his eyes and the worrisome way he glanced constantly out at the forest. They were all scared.

Foxglove just couldn't take it today. He grabbed a basket from his mother's collection and stuffed it full of whatever foods they had laying around. If he was going to be out for very long he'd need to satisfy that never ending hunger. Maybe he'd snack on things he found on his journey as well! The thought brought the smallest smile to his face.

He pushed open the door to their home- the home their father had built for them- and began to walk. He stretched his wings out and fluttered them a few times trying to get a feel for them. He hadn't attempted flying like his siblings (not that they were any good at it yet), but he did keep exercising them, getting them strong for when he would attempt flight. For now, he just wanted to get use to this body he had woken up with.

He didn't know where he was going. He had been in his pod most of the move. His eyes just grabbed hold of the towering tree and he followed it. There had to be something special about it right? He pondered this as he shoveled the basket's treats into his mouth. It was delicious, but not enough. Man he hated being hungry. It had eased up the longer he'd been out of his pod, but it was still there.

Foxglove's thought were so wrapped up in his basket of food he hadn't noticed the other on the road till her squeak hit his ears. He jolted, some of the berries in the basket spilling out onto the ground. He quickly gathered them back up before taking a few steps towards her hiding spot, "I'm sorry!" he said in a quiet, unsure tone. He had only seen a flash of pink and wasn't sure what he'd be met with. "I'm not scary." At least he didn't think so... But just to be sure she knew that he held out the basket of food towards her as if offering to share.

Well, if he said he wasn't scary...

Calanthe peeked out from behind the tree. It was just a Faun boy. She'd not made many friends, between her never-ending quest for food and Mother keeping her secret and safe away from many of the others in the Tree. This one was kind of cute, actually. Red hair and freckles on his nose.

Ooh, he had food! Her eyes flicked between his face and his basket, held out so tantalizingly. She was hungry, although that was more of a state of being for her than anything. Hm, but she didn't recognize any of the food in the basket. It looked more like pillows than food. She took a few berries out, and just as she was about to pop one in her mouth, she realized the cute Faun boy had wings! Like her!

"Hey!" she exclaimed, hopping from one hoof to the other. "You've got wings too!" She frowned and wrinkled her nose. "Where'd you come from? You're not from the Tree or I'd've seen you." She popped the berries in her mouth and put her hands on her hips, waiting for an answer.

Foxglove almost fell backwards when the pink thing finally emerged from behind the tree. It was a GIRL! Sure, he had a sister, but this wasn't a sister- this was a giiiiirl. He didn't know why this made his cheeks heat up and his skin crawl with nerves. Just a girl right? She wasn't going to eat him or something...

He blinked rapidly when she spoke. He looked over his shoulder and fluttered his wings lightly before glancing back at her. What did she mean he had wings? Didn't everyone? His eyebrows furrowed at her questioningly, but he didn't want to sound silly if that was a silly question, "What... do you mean I have wings?"

"I come from over there." he said, pointing behind him into the forest. His eyes never met hers for a long amount of time. He'd look at her then quickly look elsewhere, embarrassed by his own actions but unable to hold her gaze. "My family and I live there. Close enough for Dad to help with Tree stuff, but still far away enough to keep Mom hidden..." his voice trailed off at his words, a look of pain flashing in his eyes. As quick as it came he was changing the subject, motioning for her to follow him.

He plopped himself down in the grass, pulling the blanket off his basket in order to expose all of the goodies inside of it. "I'm hungry. Want a cookie? My brother made it." he pulled one out and held it out to her. "So you're from the tree, huh?" Was he talking a lot? Was he talking fast? He instantly shoved a cookie into his mouth to shut himself up. Oh gosh she probably thought he was weird!

"I've never met anybody with wings like mine before," Calanthe babbled as she followed him to the grassy sitting spot. "All the other Fauns have no wings at all, or else they have kinda more like, feathery wings? And there's this one girl who has wings like leaves but she doesn't look much like a Faun at all..."

She sat on her knees next to him. "What's a cookie?" she asked, peering at his basket. Nothing in there looked like food to her, but he was happily munching away on the pillow-food, so it must be at least edible. She took the offered cookie and began to nibble on it. "OOH!" she exclaimed, eyes widening. She'd never had anything this sweet before! Nom nom nom. She quickly disappeared that cookie and reached for another before stopping herself. No, that would be rude to take another without asking. "Heh," she said, biting her fingernail.

Oh good, change of subject. "Yeah!" she exclaimed suddenly. "I mean, at least I'm sure I'm from the Tree. I don't remember ever not being in the Tree. Except when I was out at the farm with Mother. I dunno where I wanna live, though, since the Tree is so dreary nowadays and I'm too big to live in Mother's place with her. I'd have to get my own space and I don't know if I want to commit myself that much to the Tree, y'know? I'd rather go exploring! And see things! Make my own place for myself! Meet new people!" Especially cute winged boys....

No.... wings? What in the world was this pretty, pink female going on about? Foxglove kinda stared at her with a dazed look on his face, trying to imagine being flightless. Well, he wasn't able to fly real well just yet, but never getting the chance to? That just sounded weird! “How do they fly?” he finally asked, unable to put the picture together. He was too curious to keep up the 'I know everything' facade, he just needed to know!

His eyes grew huge at her question- how did someone not know what a cookie was!? He seemed to completely forget just a moment ago that he didn't know something, but his mind was so consumed by her question he didn't recall. “A cookie... it's... well it's sweet food! Deliciously sweet!” he exclaimed as he shoved the basket towards her. “You GOTTA try it.” Once she willingly took one out of the basket he watched her nibble on it with eager eyes. She had to like it! She just had to... it wouldn't make sense if someone didn't right? He gave off a huge sigh of relief when she scarfed down the cookie. That meant she liked it right? She didn't immediately go for another one which cause him some doubt, “You can have more. If you liked them that is.” He held another out to her. “We can finish this basket together. My lil bro is gonna make more tonight anyways. I'm sure of it. It's pretty much all he does.” Wasn't completely true, but he didn't want her to think his brother might be cooler than him!

Foxglove blinked at her. Man could she talk and she talked about a lot of things he just didn't understand! He didn't mind though, he was glad he wasn't the only one rambling away about random stuff. He waited till she stopped for a breath to toss in his own thoughts, “Is it dreary 'cause the Tree is all hurt now? I know Dad keeps visiting a lot of the time to help... when he isn't out looking for Mom...” He shoved a cookie into his mouth and munched down on it furiously at the mention of it. He wasn't mad at his Dad or his Mom for hardly being around, but it did hurt.

“I'd like to see it some time even though it doesn't sound all that awesome. I'd still like to see something everyone keeps talking about.” Plus he'd like to understand everything she was talking about. He hated thinking that she may think less of him if she found out how lost he was. What in the world was a farm? Man, this girl was too smart for him...
