Yes, the Eidolon-Makai have sexes and genders much like humanity.
---Is there meaning to the color that the Lerato takes after the ku? I get that a color begins to show, but does the color that appear dictate what that Eidolon-Makai will look like or act or both, and if so, what's the translation from color to being?
Not really; the color just specifies that the Ku is changing into the different stages before it hatches. Usually, the colors the Ku takes on colors that the Eidolon-Makai will have in their major color scheme.
---Are there any specifics to the crests, like things that I should avoid (five sides, straight lines, etc) when designing one or is it open to anything?
The crests are open to interpretation. If you know about “Tales of Symphonia,” the crests are kinda like the crests in the game, but with a different function... if that makes sense.
---Are the LifeGems like earth gems or are they made up minerals?
LifeGems are aluminum-oxide gems like Sapphires and Ruby so they are actual earth gems.
---Like the colors, does the type of LifeGem dictate characteristics of the Eidolon-Makai that it belongs to?
Yes, the type of LifeGem helps determine the Vice/Virtue the Eidolon-Makai will have along with characteristics and qualities.
---Are the Eidolon-Makai humanoid? Do they have any specific traits that make them stand out from humans? What is their basic biology and (if there are genders) what are the differences between genders?
Yes, they are human-like. The differences between gender and sex is similar to humans. Eidolon-Makai have wings specific to their Essence or Soul, a crest that absorbs into their body over time and is replaced by a tattoo, and other characteristics of the Essence or Soul. For example, Anubis has the Essence of a Coup-de-Grace, a jackal soul and a Staurolite LifeGem. The Soul has some qualities that appear on Anubis the Eidolon-Makai [ the jackal ears / tail ]. His Essence also plays a part with the skeleton wings as part of the Essence’s qualities as well as his blindness. Anubis is blind, but has two different color eyes, symbolizing the dual qualities of the Essence Coup-de-Grace. If you want, there is also the option for your Eidolon-Makai to have an Origin. This means that their story is linked to a certain place or time; Anubis has a Jackal soul like the jackal-headed God in Egyptian lore.
---Are the souls always going to take the shape of an animal?
No. They can be plants too. However, the soul cannot be specific. So, you can’t have Dracula as your soul.
---Can the tattoos appear in different areas for different Eidolon-Makai?
The crests/ eventual tattoos are in various places. They do however, correspond to a place on the Ku itself. For example, if the crest on the Ku is in a bottom corner, the crest will be on the lower part of the Eidolon-Makai.
---If the Lerato was to begin to show green, would it then make sense for my Eidolon-Makai to have a green skin tone, for example?
If that makes sense with the rest of the qualities. However, most likely, your Eidolon-Makai will be closer to human shades of skin tone.
---Oh, and do they live with humans or on their own? What's their lifestyle like; Would they live in, like, apartment buildings or tree houses?
Eidolon-Makai live with Guardians chosen by Dr Kavortaine. The Guardian’s life style could be close to anything, but they must live on Ethaos and be respectable in that they have to provide not only for themselves, but also for their Eidolon-Makai.
---What exactly is the essence? What am I looking for when choosing an essence?
An Essence is something that’s been taken from abstract nature and tainted or purified and manifested into an object. For example, Inari has a string of prayer beads as his Essence that is absorbed into the Ku. An Essence can be close to anything, but must have a tainted or purified element to it.
---What kind of powers do the Eidolon-Makai have?
The Eidolon-Makai powers depend on the Essence, Soul and LifeGem as well as their Attributes. Powers do have to be approved by staff, though.
---Are there any taboos in the Eidolon-Makai culture? What things would they look down upon, if they differ from human morals? How much of human culture have they adapted to?
Since Kavortaine created the Eidolon-Makai recently, there is no real culture to it yet. It is really dependent on the Guardian what kind of culture the Eidolon-Makai is adapted to.
---If the crest is split into two parts on the Nakota, can the tattoo be in two different areas on the body?
The crest cannot split.

The colors of the Essence and Soul are base and accent colors. For example, Inari has a base color of light blue from his prayer beads. The kitsune adds white and the Sapphire adds a bit of a darker blue.
