The air was crisp and mild with only the barest whispering of the coming winter in the wind. Ember was glad for the comfortable day. The weather had been so unpredictable the last week, jumping from cold to warm and back again. Today was mild, but a look towards the west showed a building of clouds that would undoubtedly bring rain and the cold with it. Still, she couldn't help but be fond of this season. It was a time for change and unpredictability - a time for possibility.
She hoped it was a time for being remade and forgiven. But only time would tell in that regard.
She had been wandering for a while now, putting as much distance away from the place her mother died as possible. It was too painful to be near there. She could never fully escape it, she reflected sadly, suddenly feeling the burning of the ember around her neck keenly. The Spirits wanted her to remember. She sighed heavily as she recalled that fateful day. She wished things could go back to how they were when her mother was alive, but that time felt so far away, like a dream half remembered. She was starting to have a hard time remembering her mother's face. A wave of guilt passed her.
Shaking her head and rising from where she had been reclining in the fallen leaves, she stretched and started for the river nearby for a drink. Perhaps dunking her head under the cold water might clear her thoughts.
