As the trainees finished up practice for the day, Zinnia spotted a familiar face. She wiped the sweat off her brow on her sleeve before making her way toward her acquaintance.
Zinnia wasn't one to miss an opportunity to make a new friend. Her training schedule rarely lined up with her best friends'-- that is, Will, Colin, and Lenore-- so she appreciated any opportunity to create more ties. It was boring if she had a training session with no one to talk to, not to mention lonely. It was her goal to make friends with as many people as possible in any case, but she was even more desperate to do so when she was in a place where she didn't know anybody well.
"Hey," she said, placing a hand lightly on the trainee's shoulder, "You're Yesenia right? I remember that we did some 3D gear training together." She grinned toothily as if proud of herself for remembering. "Where are you going after this?"

Wiping the sweat from her brow, Yesenia turned as a hand was placed on her shoulder. Seeing the familiar face from 3DMG training, she grinned. "Hey, long time no see, pig tails!" She paused thoughtfully. "I hadn't really thought about it. Pro'ly mess around with 'Malia. Why, you got somethin' interestin' ta do?" Her eyes seemed to sparkle with anticipation.

Zinnia smelled an opportunity to get to know even more people. "Oh, I wasn't going to do anything interesting," she began, "but you're gonna hang out with 'Malia? I heard that you two are really close, but I don't really know her! Can I tag along?" She smiled the cutest smile she could summon. She knew that she was being forward, but she didn't care; and she had a hunch that Yesenia wouldn't, either.

Yesenia's expression lit up like the sun at Zinnia's request. She grinned toothily, the gears in her head already turning. "'Malia's super self-conscious around people here, for some reason. She's usually a jerk, but she's tryin' not to be to the people here - I dun geddit." She paused as if to let it sink in. "So!" Smiling from ear to ear, she clapped her hands together dramatically, causing her ponytail to bounce on her shoulder. "Let's go annoy her until she snaps at us!" Her eyes kira'd at the prospect, and she turned and marched off.

Zinnia followed hastily, practically skipping. The sun was beginning to set in the sky, dyeing the sky above the walls pink and yellow. The last birds could be seen flying overhead, heading back for their roosts. Clouds obscured the sky, casting a shadow that blackened the grass beneath their feet. Dinner would be served soon, followed by curfew not long after. They'd have to hurry if they intended to stay outside much longer; Zinnia picked up the pace, sticking right on Yesenia's tail.

After walking around the compound for a bit, the two found Amalia Stern running around. Yesenia called out to her, waving like a drunk hummingbird. "Heeeeeeey! Hey, 'Malia! 'Malia, hey! Over here! 'Maliaaaaa!" Although to far away to be heard, it was clear as day that the green haired woman sighed heavily as she paused and looked over at her rival. Nevertheless, she walked over to the duo, sweat clinging to her skin. "What." She asked flatly.
Yesenia frowned, feigning being hurt by the girl. "Just came to check on ya, is that a problem? I can leave if you want..." The braided girl turned and started to leave. Amalia waved after her. "Alright, see ya." She turned to return to running, but suddenly Yesenia was blocking her path, grabbing her hands with tears in her eyes. "'Maliaaaaaaaa~!" She wailed. "You're so cruel! And after everythin' we've been though together! I thought I meant more to you than that!""
Shaking free of the other's grip, Amalia seemed to finally notice Zinnia. "Who's this?" Her act forgotten, Yesenia perked up. "Oh, her? She's pig tails."

"I'm Zin," Zinnia corrected. "It's nice to meet you!" She flounced forward brightly, offering Amalia a hand in greeting. "Yesenia and I just finished training," she continued, "and thought that we could hang out with you!" She intentionally paired herself with Yesenia, thinking that it would get her in Amalia's good graces faster. Though, from the looks of things, it appeared that Yesenia had not been kidding that her goal was to annoy her friend.

Giving her a small smile in return, Amalia accepted Zinnia's hand and shook it. "It's good to meet you, as well, Zin." Yesenia pouted. This wasn't fun! They were supposed to be getting 'Malia to get mad at them, not shake hands! Thinking quickly, she grinned. "Hey, pig tails! Didja know that Malia and I used ta be in a relationship?"
While it was a shame to play her trump card so early, it'd be worth it if 'Malia gave the reaction she wanted. A sudden pain arcing from her arm told her that it had worked, and Amalia's fist retreated as she glared at the ponytailed girl. "For ******** sake, Yes! What is your problem?"
Yesenia grinned deeper as she rubbed at her punched arm. "Not much, just wanted to see ya get mad. You been all quiet lately, 'snot like ya."

"A relation--?" Zin began, but was interrupted by Amalia punching Yesenia in the arm. That certainly was a bizarre form of friendship, but Zin did not miss Yesenia's words; she truly cared about Amalia.
Trying to distract Amalia before she could do any more punching, Zin asked, "What do you mean by used to be in a relationship? Aren't you still in a relationship? I mean-- you're friends, after all. That's a type of relationship." She stared blankly from one girl to the next; it was clear that she truly was as oblivious as she sounded.

Amalia broke off her glaring at Yesenia to look at Zinnia. Was she serious? Yesenia seemed to come to the conclusion that she was first, because she immediately put both hands on her sides - perhaps to seem more official - and said, "By 'relationship', I mean we had se- Agh!" She was interrupted before she could say more by Amalia clapping her on the back of the head. "'Maliaaaaaaa! That hurt! I was just going to sat that..." Amalia gave her a glare that could wilt flowers, and the grey haired girl shut up.
The green haired girl turned back to Zin and sighed. "Let me see if I can put this more tactfully than Yes. It shouldn't be that difficult, considering she's stupid." Another glare at Yesenia silenced any oncoming protests. "The relationship she was talking about is one that two people have with each other, but usually not with other people." She drifted off, blushing slightly. It was clear to Yesenia that her ex-girlfriend was not at all comfortable talking about it, and the braided girl hid a smile. Seeing Amalia flustered was probably as good as seeing her mad, if not more. "Do... you understand what I'm talking about?" Amalia asked, averting her eyes a little.

Zinnia's eyebrows scrunched up, signifying her confusion. "A... relationship that you usually don't have with other people," she repeated. She wracked her brains for such a relationship. "Are you... sisters?" she guessed lamely. That wouldn't explain how they were no longer in such a relationship, however. She thought quickly and corrected herself, "No, wait! You used to be step-siblings but then your parents split up again so now you're not?" She grinned, sure that she'd solved the riddle.

Yesenia roared with laughter at Zin's guesses and Amalia's inability to answer. The green haired woman turned to her rival, wordlessly begging for assistance. Snickering, Yesenia put her hands up in the air, looking away. "Don't look at me! I'm stupid, remember?"
Silently cursing her friend, Amalia turned back helplessly to Zinnia. "We're not related. We, uh, were friends first, but then we thought we could be something more than that. It didn't work out, so now we're just friends again. And...."
She drifted off as Yesenia planted her chin on the other girl's shoulder. "This is just sad." She grinned at Amalia's expense before turning her attention back to the blue haired girl. "Alright, pig tails, lemme spell it out for ya. Ya got someone ya think about more than anyone else, always wantin' to make 'em happy, or be with 'em when yer not? That's how 'Malia n' me were, once. It's called havin' a crush."
Amalia turned to her ex-girlfriend and whispered furiously, "Why couldn't you have said that from the beginning??" The other girl simply grinned and shrugged. "'Smore fun the other way."

Zinnia rested a finger on her chin and looked down at the ground, deep in thought. "A crush is someone that you think about more than anyone else, someone you want to make happy..." she mused. "Someone like... Lenore?" She looked up at Yesenia and Amalia. "She's my best friend. I think about her almost all the time, and when she smiles..." Her own lips curved in an inexplicable smile. "It makes me really happy. So I like to make her smile."
"Wait!!" Zin exclaimed in surprise. "A 'crush--' isn't that what Colin had on me? He asked me out, but then..." Zinnia suddenly blushed a deep crimson. "Is that how I feel about Lenore? I-- I--" She put a hand to her forehead, apparently overwhelmed by this news of her emotions. "By 'more...' You mean... Like... K-kissing...? Do I... want to kiss Lenore...?" She stared at Amalia and Yesenia, clearly begging for a rescue.

Yesenia grinned at Zin's blushing. This was becoming more and more fun. She cast a look at Amalia, reminded of how the other girl acted when they first started going out - it was so fun to tease her then. It still was, of course, but even more so back then. The green haired girl was blushing as well, possibly remembering the same things. Deciding to press them both at the same time, Yesenia nodded with a huge smile. "Kissing, and then some!"
At her side, steam rolled out of Amalia's ears, apparently too engrossed in her own memories to notice what Yesenia was doing.

"M-more than.... k-kiss..." Zinnia, suddenly having a great need to let out some excess energy, started fiddling with one of her pigtails. She couldn't prevent herself; in her mind's eye, she saw Lenore's face getting closer... and closer... her best friend's ruby eyes closed, her pale lips puckered...
"Ahhh!" Zin shouted, squeezing her eyes shut and shaking her head frantically. "She's just my friend! I can't think like that!" She twisted her pigtail over and over in her hands. "I-- I mean, even if I did like her like that, it's not like she likes me back... Not like that..." Or does she? she wondered. They'd been friends almost since they first started training. They'd taken care of each other and spent time with one another ever since then. As far as Zinnia knew, Lenore didn't talk to many other people besides her. For those reasons, and more, were why they were best friends.
But... What if they could be more than that? Zinnia had never considered the thought before, but now it made her nervous and excited. Did she want to be even closer to Lenore? Did Lenore want to be even closer to her?
"How do I know if she likes me?" Zinnia wailed.
