Atop one of the many apartment complexes that spotted the streets of Destiny City stood the Senshi of Prayer beside one of the several heating vents. With knees shaking and teeth chattering it was a wonder how she managed to not break any teeth. The blanket she often brought along with her on patrol had snagged on something and got pulled from her shoulders quite forcefully. Unfortunately she wasn’t quick enough to react and it landed in a muddy puddle.

Thanks to the dreams she had been having over the past few weeks, Acrucis had become some what of an insomniac and the only way for her to finally find rest was to exhaust herself by going out on patrol; otherwise she would most definitely not be out here. She brought her hands up to her mouth and blew warm air onto her frozen digits, “M-m-ust-t-t ke-e-e-ep m-mooo-ving.” Ha, so much for self motivation. Oh how she hated Fall and Winter; simply the most unpleasant time of year to go outside.

The cold was something she had in common with Newgrange; his short sleeves were doing him no favors, and when every night the temperature was dipping closer and closer to freezing, he struggled to react. He wanted to be at home, in bed—but obligation drove him. He had tried everything to stay warm—rubbed his arms, run, tried to fight a youma (it slipped away; it hadn't even been interested in fighting). Even it was too cold for conflict.

He had thought, then, that he was absolutely insane. That there was no reason to even be out—and then a powered signature flickered in the distance, and maybe it was out of desperation for some powered contact, or to know who was crazy enough to be out in this weather, he bolted towards it.

He caught movement and slowed his pace; he didn't want to seem desperate—even if he might have been. Just a tad bit. "Hey," he greeted as he approached from behind. His breath hitched and his throat nearly closed up with the cold air slid down. Newgrange had to stifle a cough as he neared the senshi. "—How are you out in that?" he asked, and even with her blanket it looked like she had to be wearing even less clothes than him. "Aren't you cold?"

Obviously concern for her was enough to distract him from the cold he was feeling—even if only a moment.

“Hey!” Acrucis looked over her shoulder at him clearly happy for the added company. She scooted around the vent then and motioned with her head for him to come join her by the warm air. One of the benefits of it getting colder out meant that buildings had their heat turned up and these warm pyers of air served as great places to keep from freezing.

“Me? Cold? Nooo” She smiled at him teasingly with a look that made it pretty obvious she was joking with him. “Skirts are so warm this time of year, you should try it.” Acrucis laughed through chattering teeth. Two sounds that would likely never be found in a hit song any time soon; it just sounded weird. “What’s got you out here so late?” she inquired, perhaps he was an insomniac too. “And in a short sleeve no less.” She added noting his bare arms least he has gloves with his outfit - lucky. The senshi of prayer thought with a bit of a mental sad face. The cosmic tailor that crafted these uniforms really failed sometimes.

Newgrange did not question the invitation and was quick to join her; almost immediately a rush ran down his spine as he absorbed all that he could of the heat. "I don't think I've got the legs for a skirt, sorry," he said—and almost sounded apologetic.

At the very least, he was sorry that she was stuck in something so short when he had the luxury of long, warm pants—nice boots, nice gloves, and thick clothes.

But even with then, the cold had seeped through; it felt like it had gone past his skin, like it had gripped his muscles and latched onto his bones. His blood felt coagulated, and even if it was in his head, he felt the cold had wormed its way into his very core, and some irrational fear wondered if he'd ever thaw out. A good mug of hot chocolate would do the trick, but not here. Here, he was working.

Or, at least—trying to.

"Guilt," he finally admitted. "...I dislike knowing that I've been granted some cosmic power and haven't done anything with it. I've been like this…" He gestured towards his outfit, "Since last December. And I haven't been able to do anything with it. I keep hoping that going out will yield some results, but the truth is that I've failed in every aspect. I have more questions than I do answers, and I fear that someone expected something of me, and I've let them down."

Periwinkle hair flitted in the wind by a sharp updraft of cold air from between the two buildings and for a moment Acrucis hated life. Blessed be the darkness around them otherwise he may have seen an expression on her face that imitated a fairly famous internet cat that found its way onto any memes. “I know exactly how you feel,” she admitted finally. It was a sentiment easily shared and had been recently amplified with the dreams, memories of the future, she had been having as of late.

“I’m kind of useless out here on my own, yet here I am. The only thing I can do is hope I run into someone that needs help otherwise I’ll be the one who needs saving.” The only pitfall of powers like hers, great for defence, terrible… terrible for offence. “I’m Acrucis by the way.” The Senshi of Prayer extended her hand out to him, a motion which caused her bangles to make a ringing sound.

Newgrange was sympathetic, and the expression he gave her was a perfect representation of such. "Newgrange," he introduced, taking her hand and giving it a firm shake. "It's nice to meet you."

Though it would have been nicer in spring or summer, but it was his own fault. If he'd made more progress in warmer months, he wouldn’t have to punish himself by being out now.

"I feel like I'm expected to fight, but I'm either fighting youma or people so much stronger than I am." He pursed his lips slightly to the side. "I suppose I'm not much of a fighter. I haven't gotten used to it. I've learned little things, gotten lessons, but. I just haven't settled into it yet. I keep telling myself that if I just keep practicing, just keep working at it, it'll start feeling right, but."

He glanced back out at the coldness away from the air vent. "Not many sparring partners tonight. But I suppose they're an odd thing to go out for."

It was just easier to tell himself to practice fighting—improve his strength and skill—then to try and sift through the mysteries of this war. There were other things he could do—leads he could follow.

But they worried him even more than the thought of losing in a fight, and if he couldn’t handle himself here on Earth, how was he supposed to handle himself on some far away world? How was he supposed to…visit his wonder? Meet his destiny?

“At least you’re trying to learn.” That’s way more than she had been doing anyway. Then again how would she explain her sudden interest in self defence to her parents? So while you’re asleep I sneak out of the house and power up into a senshi of healing and run around town in a skirt fighting evil; or rather getting my butt handed to me because I don’t know how to protect myself other than what dad taught me in grade school and kick them ‘where the sun doesn’t shine’… yeah that’d go over real well...

“I’ll be honest though.” She fell silent for a moment mulling over what she wanted to say. On one hand some people were quite put off by her neutrality but at the same time she was still in one piece. However the last time she told someone she had chaos friends she had been chastised pretty harshly. “Not everyone on the other side of this war is all gung ho about fighting either”

“It’s okay to be prepared but I suggest not going in expecting a fight; unless it’s a youma. Those I tend to run away from.“ Those things just want to nom your face off or eat your soul. Never mind the shade incident last year with clones running amok. “That and I can’t throw a punch to save my life.” She jested in a small attempt to lighten the mood a bit.

“In all honesty I think it comes down to how each party approaches the situation if that makes any sense.” She ran her fingers through her tangled hair nervously. “You might be pleasantly surprised if you can get them to talk.” Them being those who have aligned themselves with chaos.
PostPosted: Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:35 pm

Newgrange glanced up, a bit surprised, but he didn't seem taken aback by her statement. "No, I understand. It's like in everyday, you can't judge a book by its cover. To be honest, I prefer talking. I'd like to understand what made them the way they are. What they're fighting for." He shrugged, adjusting position to get a little more heat. "Just because they're on a side different than me doesn't mean they shouldn’t still get a chance to speak, so…words are more powerful than actions anyway, right?"

…Unless they were dealing the striking blow, in which case there was nothing coming back from that. Newgrange had to swallow that comment though; he was trying to avoid thinking about the nightmares—the dreams that felt too real. The future, overrun with Chaos, that scared him.

Things weren't that bad—but if they ever started to turn? He wanted to do things differently. To find a way to stop Chaos from doing that—but that wasn't just one person. That wasn't someone you could talk to. That was a force of evil, driving people to do terrible things.

"…I mean, I just want to make sure if words aren't working, I'm at least able to defend myself until I get out of there. But—" he flashed her a hopeful smile. "I'm sure your punches aren't that bad, right?"

Acrucis’ eyebrows raised as she looked away with a smile tugging the corner of her lips; obviously embarrassed by her inability to properly defend herself. “I may have been told once or twice that I’d hurt myself more than the other person.” Then again with how easily she bruised that very well may be the truth.

“Not that I’ve ever actually tried though. The closest I’ve come to attacking someone was shoving them back through a mirror then landing on them.” And I’m pretty sure I got more hurt than he did. Even so it was something she still felt bad for even months later. “I’ve been in tough situations before but thankfully I wasn’t alone. Maybe that’s what you need? Someone to patrol with till you're comfortable with your fighting skills?”
PostPosted: Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:40 pm

"Maybe," Newgrange agreed, trying to imagine Acrucis in the situation she described. "Or more people willing to spar with me," he sighed. "Though I admit, it feels strange to ask that of people. I don't particularly enjoy, 'Hi, I'm Newgrange—want to fight?'. You know?"

He shrugged and rubbed his gloved hands together. "Though I am interested to see what magic they have. It's like…the last part of this that really pieces it all together, you know? Magic. I don’t have any," he explained quickly, though he didn't know why. Maybe he hadn't earned it, or maybe he never would. His lips pursed tightly and he glanced back at the senshi. "What's it like? When you use your magic. Does it feel different, or…natural?"

Acrucis couldn’t help but laugh at his mock greeting, she had to admit that yeah it would be kind of strange if someone up and asked her that.

“It was different at first, kind of surreal I guess. I think the strangest part really was watching a persons cut close or bruise fade in seconds; things that take days or weeks to go away are just… gone. But I guess I’ve gotten use to it,” she shrugged her shoulders almost like it was no big deal, even though it was. “Magic is great and all but it seems to have it’s place and can be situational; and even then, just like physical fighting, sometimes it isn’t good enough.” How many times did she try to help Thraen, with all of those lacerations her heal didn’t seem to touch. Not to mention the events from her dreams.

“As for you, I wouldn’t worry too much. I think you’re kind of like my friend Ashur; back when he was a page he didn’t have any magic.” Was… is… she wasn’t really sure on the tense; it’s been a while since she last saw him but if her dreams were any indication on how he had grown in the future, magic was something he definitely came into possession of. “You know, you should meet Shangri-La! He would be a good person to talk to on what to expect.”

“As for sparing, I don’t know if I’d be a very good partner to go against. But,” she paused a moment feeling kind of sheepish for what she was going to ask. “But if you wouldn’t mind teaching me…” Acrucis trailed off. He was still learning as well but perhaps he’d be willing to teach her small things he does know? “And hey! If one of us gets hurt. If I get hurt” she corrected, ”I can always fix it. Practical application for healing magic yes?”

'Back when he was a page' was a phrase that brought Newgrange dual hope and guilt. It meant there was hope for him, but it was an unfortunate reminder that he was still nothing more than what he had been when he'd started. Still, Acrucis had given him very little time to dwell on what he deemed his own incompetency; he glanced at her suggestion and couldn't help but smile.

"Yeah? I don't know much, but I suppose…" His voice trailed off for a moment and then his enthusiasm seemed quickly rekindled. "I can show you how to block a punch? I mean, to the face at least. It's about deflecting, and if your opponent's thrown themselves too quickly it's a good way to get them off balance. I could show you, if…"

Again, his voice trailed off; he looked to the heating vent. "If you could bare to part with this for the few moments it might take?"

A smile tugged the corners or her lips amused by how excited yet nervous he seemed. Taking a step back from the vent she brought her hands up and brew warm air onto them “Kay,” she said as her knee caps started to bounce “now what?” Blue eyes looked at him almost expected yet in a sense embarrassed since she hadn’t a clue what to do, but that’s why he was going to teach her right?
PostPosted: Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:42 pm

Newgrange flashed a quick smile. "It takes a little bit of practice but—if I do this," he said, and pulled his arm back to throw a punch at her direction, "What do you do?"

It was a rhetorical question and he moved slowly so she had time to see what he was doing. "If you're fast enough, you can dodge my fist by ducking or weaving, but it also risks you losing sight of your opponent. If you're busy moving it might put you off balance, too. Or, you can try to block—which is my preferred method, if only because it lets me keep my balance and keep my eye on the opponent."

He held one fist up, as though it were still intended to mimic attack, but used his free hand to reach out and adjust her arm. "Instinct kind of kicks in. You keep your arm close to your chest and when a punch comes you just brush it aside and away from your body. If your opponent put a lot of weight into their punch, it throws them off balance and gives you the opportunity to use that against them."

He moved her arm to demonstrate; by adjusting her arm he brushed his would-be punch away and continued to do a slow motion display. With his punch brushed off, he showed how the weight behind it shifted and left his whole right side open to attack.

After a second he paused, released Acrucis and then stepped back. "…I might not be the best at teaching. Do you want a display? If you, ah, if you want to go ahead and try and punch me I might be able to show you a bit better?"

To a degree she felt kind of like a ball-joint-doll in the way he moved her arms for her to show how to deflect the attack. Not that she minded all that much considering had it had been a real attack she would have just squeezed her eyes shut and prayed; perhaps squeal like a little child and run away. She laughed, however, when he took a step back, “Trust me you’re doing fine, I think I understand what you’re saying.”

Stepping back with one foot Acrucis brought her arms up, hands balled into fists - though she was sure the whole stance was wrong. “Ready?” she said perhaps a little too enthusiastically but in truth it was all in fun, and she knew full well there’d be no way her punch would hurt him even if she did manage to land it.
