Rep had a short fuse. This much was well known, but lately he'd been starting to get it under control, slowly working through the many many problems that littered his psyche. But one issue that always remained, that underpinned everything was his own insecurity and self loathing. It could never be cured and never went away, these days his greatest fears still revolved around his greatest joy, Harrison was someone he was certain he didn't deserve and couldn't possibly keep forever. Yet he was the very purpose to living, the only good thing he had. Everything hinged on the man never finding out what a shitty and pathetic person he'd married and never finding anyone better.

The new guy had nailed him in every fear he had, and even despite the fear of repercussions, of being on thin ice, he had gotten up from where he sat with intent. It felt like a threat to life itself. As far as Rep was concerned there was no life without Harrison, the guy might as well have leveled a mortal threat at him.

He'd been hovering on the point of movement when other lives were mentioned and that had been enough to break him, to shatter his self control into a thousand pieces. He still to this day tortured himself with the alternate world where Harrison had been with Clarice, even despite the fact that it had not truly been either of them at the time. He worried and tormented himself that he would not be enough, that there was some flaw that would ruin everything and that any one of those worlds could lay it bare.

Fear as always transmuted into anger and he stalked the hallways, asking people here and there with restrained politeness about where Horace was, that he was new, that Rep had to take him to see someone, that it was all very formal and very proper. The death hunters, not normally helpful didn't see any reason why not and it led him on a trail to the library, with one of them being like oh its that kid over there before going back to their work.

Rep's expression was something wild, as he crossed to where the death trainee was.

"Spar." he said, coldly and quietly. "Right now. You are going to come ******** quietly or I am going to rip you limb from ******** limb right here where there aren't damage dampeners to save you."

Lesson number 1: Bill had a short fuse.

No, not Bill. Rep. Both were damn stupid names, so it was hard for Horace to keep the distinction between the two. Idly, he wondered if there was some weird dream world where Harrison had been shackled to someone else. He tossed his phone down on the stack of papers he'd been sorting through and rubbed his hands across his face, gently massaging the marks left on his nose by his glasses. Horace had wanted to read up on all the island rules, but even the documentation was spotty at bet. So he'd turned to his phone for just a bit. What had started out as a friendly flirt with Jan had somehow snowballed.

He still couldn't believe his own audacity. Making jokes about being chained up, oh man. Horace flushed. He flushed even more thinking that such a thing might be fun to try. Suddenly, he was more than a little glad most people were paying him no mind. Sighing, he creaked back his chair on two legs and closed his eyes. And this is how Rep would find him. His chair came down with a crack when Rep spoke. Of all things, he hadn't expected the man to come find him.

"Pretty sure that's illegal, even on the island," he said mildly, pushing his glasses back up his nose. Even though his voice was calm, Horace was more than a little frightened. He thought of every time he'd gotten cornered, the things he'd been held down, those burns along his collarbone. But Rep's face told Horace he would do it, be-damned the consequences. He held up a hand and straightened his papers.

"But, if it'll soothe your pride to beat me to a pulp, then let's do this so I can get back to work." There were any number of arguments he could've made - and maybe he would make them later, with Rep's weapon sticking out of his body. Jannisari hissed in his mind. "Lead the way. I gotta say, though, you were prettier in pictures." Horace's knees felt a little wobbly.

It took everything Rep had to not attack the man then and there, to just leap at him and go all out with hands, teeth, anything he could possibly pull into the fray. Some dark and bitter part of him wanted to tear off the combined straitjacket that was the cuff and Marie, just tear it all from him like shedding a skin, then he could summon Tracey properly and fully and make this impudent s**t learn the meaning of pain.

And it was unsettling, because the normal anger, the normal desire to rend and destroy was twisted up with some other feeling, that sensation that he'd been denied some victory that had been rightfully his and heightened everything else. He remembered how easy it had been to murder the guys at the outpost, shattering their shields and sinking blade into flesh with that buttery and satisfying thunk. He wanted to do it again, just once. Just one more person. Just eradicate this threat from his life.

"You'd be ******** surprised." Rep said, still low and tightly controlled, the tension standing out across the muscles of his broad shoulders.

You were prettier in pictures.

It shouldn't have stung but it did. It always ******** did, he knew he was unattractive, he was aware of it every ******** morning he had to look himself in the mirror, and that too was why he needed to do this, why this ******** kid was such a threat. Harrison was gorgeous and of course they ******** wanted to steal him, everyone wanted to steal him.

But they couldn't. They couldn't have him. He wouldn't ******** let it happen.

"You were clearly never ******** pretty." he snarled, and - roughly seizing the other man's shoulder in case he decided to make a run for it - he steered them both towards the training fields, all the while tempted, so so ******** tempted to lead him somewhere more secluded instead, without wards or spectators.

"I never said I was pretty." He whistled as he was promptly hustled out of the library, sneaking wave to the girl at the desk. Horace figured he was already in enough deep s**t that being nonchalantly wouldn't hurt ,him... more. Wasn't the phrase 'fake it 'til you make it'? It seemed logical.

{you have gotten yourself into something, boy. it would be wise to tread more lightly.}

{Thank you, Dr. Obvious. I'll just try to stay alive.}

{see that you do.} Then, they were there, on the field. He summoned Jannisari into his hands. He could feel were calluses would eventually form. Facing down Rep was like facing a charging bull. Horace resisted the urge to dangle his red scarf at the man.

"For the record, he's not even my type."

Not even his type. That was the way it always was too. People wanted the things he treasured and valued just to have them, just to ******** him over. They came in, they used and then they left. He'd watch it happen with his mother, he'd watched it happen with so much ******** s**t. And all he could do was fight, fight and fight and fight in the hopes that one day people would get the hint and back off. Every time he had to make some kind of example, to try and drive it home that ******** with his s**t had consequences. He knew before he even started this wouldn't stick, he could break this kid's arms and beat him to a pulp and he wouldn't stop being a smart arse. It was like looking at Shiloh again, knowing he'd have to kill him to make it stick.

He couldn't kill anyone else. He couldn't watch Harrison suffer. That wasn't the point in any of this.

"Typical ******** fresh meat reaction. Get here and pick a fight with the biggest guy in the ******** yard. You couldn't just ******** leave well enough alone, you had to make it ******** personal."

There was a moment where the scarred half-redhead looked a lot more tired than angry, but it quickly faded and he turned that wild unblinking blue stare back on Horace. He spread his arms.

"Go. Hit me." he said. Make it all ******** fair and legal, save him from the consequences of everything he did.

"I didn't pick a fight 'cause you were the biggest ******** man, or however you want to paint it. Didn't know was your man, is all. I don't poach from other dudes, even if they act like assholes." But, if the man wanted to be hit, he'd oblige him. Jannisari wanted it too. She liked the thrill of it, the feel of hitting soft flesh. He sprang forward, but at the last moment shied away, succeeded in only nicking the man on the arm.

"Do we really have to do this?"

{deeper. I want to taste his pulse, horace.}

Harrison had headed out to the field, because he knew that's where Rep would end up.

If he didn't, they'd have bigger problems.

It was less out of concern for Horace (and Harrison had done this pony show about a hundred times) and not even out of concern that a charge would go wrong (there was the cuff, the wards, Marie). But out of their more recent afflictions. And to their credit, nobody had harassed Rep over it, as much s**t as they'd given him for Shiloh and the old lady.

But still, it was something Harrison didn't understand. So, for now, he'd settle for watching over it. He'd relaxed a little in the following months. For a while, nobody could pry him out of Rep's immediate area with a crowbar, and he had waited with threatening intensity for somebody to try.

He watched through his binoculars as Rep dutifully marched Horace out, thankful he'd done that much.

"You still ******** tried." and that was all it took. All it ******** took was one careless ******** to ruin his life, he didn't even argue with the inherent arrogance in the implication that Horace could poach from him in the first place.

He didn't summon Tracey because he couldn't, a fact the fallen angel resented deeply, it had not been his fault he hissed that things had gone so dramatically south in the arctic outpost. He should by rights be able to take part in this, to taste the foundling fear of this upstart. But he was denied, just as Rep knew inherently he would be denied any satisfaction from this fight.

The blow was glancing and this too was frustrating, he wanted pain, he wanted something, anything to detract from his own self loathing.

He clenched his fists and was about to swing out at the other man when he spotted Harrison at the edge of the fields. He faltered and halted, he'd be able to see any way he ******** up, anything he did wrong, it had increased the stakes even further. He had to win.

"Surely you can hit harder than that ******** wimpy attempt?" he snapped.

Horace sighed. He wished the other man would just get on with it, if he was going to wipe the field with Horace's face. If there was one thing he was good at, it was getting beaten up. Of course, part of his resolution had been to stop just taking the beatings and fight back. Horace did not notice the other man watching them.

"I didn't know he was attached," he said hotly. This was likely the stupidest fight he'd been in. "And he said no - why're you so worried? Or are you just like a ********' bull seeing red?" Horace reached up and fumbled the scarf free from his neck and dangled it out as though he were a matador and Rep some particularly unruly bull. In his mind, he hissed at Jannisari to be quiet.

"Come on, Tora, your turn."

He didn't need to explain why he was worried to this guy. He didn't need to explain a single ******** thing.

Clenching his hands again, he narrowed his eyes and closing the distance swung out, aiming squarely at the other man's gut with a solid punch. It was satisfying, the twinge across his knuckles, the thump of an attack on someone's shield.

And on some level it was even more satisfying knowing the guy was gay. Rep still, despite being married to a man refused to consider himself one of them. He had never felt like he fitted and this was just another extension of taking his inner problems out on this outer target.

"I can't even have one ******** thing." he snarled, preparing to lash out all over again.

Horace braced himself for Rep's charge, but the punch to the gut still caused him to stumble backwards. Maybe the man did really eat rocks for breakfast. But it was his snarled words that caused Horace to pause. His lips thinned. Rep came off as a bully, pure and simple - one who hated the world and anyone whom he say as a threat to the delicate balance in his mind.

"You've got ******** everything! Are you blind or just stupid?" He had a husband who was willing to put up with his obviously crazy a**. (For a moment, he wondered if they switched in bed or what. The thought was immediately banished to the 'no' region of his mind.) He lunged forward, stabbing his tekko down towards Rep's thigh. In his mind, Jannisari hummed.

"Everything." he repeated, laughing out loud at the absurdity. He had one thing, one thing in a world of s**t jobs and people who wanted to take, or at least break his s**t every ******** day.

The pain this time was significant, hissing through his teeth as the bite stirred Tracey in his thoughts all the more.

he said sharply, resenting the denial every single time. He hated it too.

This time when he swung it was with real effort behind it. "If you think I have everything you are ******** more deluded than I thought."

Horace hissed, swallowed a pained yelp as Rep hit him. <********>. His vision swam for a few moments. He was going to have a real nice black eye from that. Jannisari stayed quiet, but he could feel her observing,. If she were physical, he was certain she'd have a notepad and be scribbling down things he could've done better.

"So.. you're saying it's not enough? That everything you've got here ain't ******** enough? You're like a rock-handed bully who beats up kids in the lunchroom for money and then goes home and holds his damn pet so tightly it suffocates. ********> Horace was projecting, and a part of him knew that, but Rep looked like ever other goddamn bully who wasn't satisfied with anything. This time he aimed for the man's chest, crossing both blades in an x as he swung.

"You don't know s**t about what I have or what I've lost." Rep spat. He was ******** tired of having to deal with ******** broken little boys and their issues with not being able to shut their mouth. He was doing them a ******** service, he wasn't Cael, as much as he wanted to he wasn't able to kill them without being killed, even when they ******** deserved it.

He found himself additionally horrified at the thought of suffocating Massacre who was the cutest little cow to ever ******** exist. This only pissed him off more. "You are a ******** retard is all you ******** are."

He hardly blocked the strike at his chest, letting it land with that same vaguely satisfied intake of air as pain blossomed across his body.

He swung again, muscles singing in satisfaction, this time aiming again for the point below his ribs. "You don't know s**t about me."

Horace nearly dropped top his knees.

"And you don't know s**t about me either, so we're even. Yet here we are." Horace's light accent deepened when he was angry; he hated it. "You've got him, at least! And the s**t I do know about ya is you're a mean b*****d with a short fuse." Horace had finally noticed Harrison watching them. While it was hard to make out if it really was Harrison or not, Horace ran on instinct and assumed. He could tell he was running out of steam. But so what? He tried to use Jannisari's charge and failed.

Today was just perfect.
