So, looks like GW is going to follow a new pattern: Release a campaign book, followed by a boxed set containing the rules, a scenario booklet and a selection of minis, including a pair of exclusives just for the set. The latest one, Deathstorm, featuring the Blood Angels and Tyranids: Featuring a limited edition captain: And a Brood Lord: All plastic and I'm sure it's something of a deal.

Any thoughts about them mixing up their base sizes? Some of the basic infantry is even in larger-than-25mm, like the tactical marines below.

Strangely off-topic, but alright, it is something they are slowly moving towards in due time with certain kits. Who knows what the reasoning might be behind this choice? Maybe slightly bigger models are on the way or some conspiracy idiots will start crying that soon we'll need to rebase all our models or forever be banished from their stores for not having the right base size.

BrookM some conspiracy that soon we'll need to rebase all our models or forever be banished from their stores for not having the right base size. *heavy breathing intensifies*

Not -that- off-topic, it's all part of the same release string, and there are definitely some oddball base sizes in the starter kit as well: look at the Broodlord, Carnifex, Assault Marines, and Warriors. How's this a new marketing model? Isn't it the same way they released their last few starters, including the Space Woofs one?

How's this a new marketing model? Isn't it the same way they released their last few starters, including the Space Woofs one? The word on the street is that starting with the Blood Angels models that are slightly bulkier (so from power armoured models onwards) will be mounted on slightly larger bases, both to better convey their size, as well as making them more stable. The 'Fex mounted on a flyer base, which has been around since the Valkyrie now and it looks like the Warriors are on 60mm bases, which does strike me a odd, the 50mm base may have been a better choice with them. Looks like the Brood Lord base is the odd one out, it may very well be a one-off design, made as a part of the sprue that holds the model. I hesitate to call these starters though, more like expansions for the campaign books, as they follow up on what has been set up there. These do not contain snap-fit minis, but instead contain regular sprues from boxed sets. The smaller rulebook is a nice added bonus though, it beats buying a new copy of Dark Vengeance or being suckered into buying one of those smaller hardback books.

What I do notice is a conspicuous absence of any building ruins in that box. Not that I expected GW to include any, but the campaign book includes a re-release of the Cities of Death rules. I'm guessing that GW is banking on people buying lots of their building kits for their playing surfaces, which is a pretty solid assumption.
However, foamboard and some work can get you some pretty good-looking ruins for less money.

The building kits aren't as compact as they used to be, plus it improves the sales somewhat when you force your customers to buy a few extra kits to get the most out of that new supplemental book.
Honestly though, you don't need all that many buildings to play a proper game. A full table looks impressive, but can be a pain to play on, especially now that GW more and more encourages you to field big models.
