He was lucky. He knew that. It wasn't every troll that found out he had a hatch-mate....also wasn't every troll that lived when their lusus did not. His new lusus wasn't the same though, while beastdad tried to nurture Zari and even put up with what a shut-in the wriggler was....it wasn't the same. He couldn't blame Kei or beastdad, they both tried to include him in their little family, but Zari just wasn't like them. Never had it felt so evident as when he had needed to go get something from the pantry....only to have the heavy door slam shut behind him.
The pantry was cold and dark.....it reminded him a little of home, that dark, empty theater he'd called home that is.....not the death trap on a mountain. If he could count the number of times he'd been clocked by a falling vase (to test reflexes), or been tossed out of the hive (the running track in the front hall had bested him more than a few times), or fallen prey to the floor dropping out from under him (pressure sensitive....how was he to know he couldn't stand for a moment to try to put up artwork?).....well, needless to say all that just wasn't him. The nutrition block was him....Kei hardly ever used it if she could instead build a fire to cook something on....but Zariah liked to fancy himself as somewhat more....civilized.
Zariah groaned as his stomach churned once more, he had food, that was one blessing....but there was only so long he could sleep without sopor slime. His head was throbbing and it reeled at the very idea of yet another night of tossing and turning, plagued by nightmares of his own lusus' demise. Ugh.....as much as he had appreciated not being culled on the spot....he did curse Kei at least a little for his predicament. Did she HAVE to turn her hive into a maze of death?

Kei had been beaming with pride for nights. Through training and everything, she had just been ecstatic. Not every troll had a hatchmate, and it was – though she would never express it as such – so cool to meet someone who shared her symbol, color and... she could swear... face! She loved having a housemate, especially since he needed rescuing all the time. It hadn't occurred to either her or beastdad that they might need to renovate the house... of course not! It was her hive, and it was perfect, and Zariah just wasn't used to it yet... but it would keep him – and his vulnerable, soft self – safe while she and Beastdad were out.
She had gone out with Beastdad for the first time since bringing her orangeblooded twin home because the pantry was bare and they needed meat. Good meat; meat fit for a strong knight like herself. Her hive was safe, full of defenses that doubled as training tools, so she and beastdad had felt comfortable leaving him alone in it.
Finally, though, she and the musclebeast clopped back home, carrying some seriously large plant parts and dead, skinned, and cleaned animals, ready to be butchered into delicious proteinacious meat.
Beastdad set her down at the running track and watched as she managed to struggle through it: he'd just set it to a fiercer setting, but she was doing very well. He himself trotted on it with ease before leaping into the entrance with a graceful and beautiful jump.
Keionx looked at her edible treasures: she was sure her new housemate would love it. ”Zariah!” she called into the cavern that was her home, ”We hath returned!” she announced, ”And we doth beareth victuals of grand proportions!”

She was home? Oh merciful messiahs! The pantry hadn't been completely bare, offering scraps and nibbles to keep him from starving....but he needed REAL food. He needed a PROPER recopercoon. He needed......ugh......to be in a hive he didn't have to fear for his young life in. He almost wondered if the highbloods that killed his lusus would've been the better alternative. At least that would've been quick.
"K-kei?!" he called, voice hoarse from days of disuse. He needed to find a way to keep himself occupied whenever she went out on those long trips....he could've survive on his own like that. Maybe he could meet some other trolls and have them visit him.....it wasn't like the hihve wasn't big enough for company.....plus with both his and Kei's recopercoon there was a s pare when she was out on one of her hunting expiditions. "Kei!" he called again, cracking voice firming a little with effort, "I'm stuck in the pantry! Come get me out!" he pleaded, feeling like the useless wiggler he just knew he was. He cursed the weighted doors anew, feeling all the more foolish being stuck in a hive. What loser got trapped in his own hive? Only stupid wigglers clearly.....

Keionx frowned, perplexed. She could hear him, but he was so faint. ”Zariah?” she called again. His voice again, the words muffled but plaintive. A cry for help!
Scenarios ran through Keionx's mind – all involving Zariah being accosted by some monster in her hive. An intruder! A beast! A princess!
But most of all, a rescue.
”I shall save you!” she cried, charging down the hallway, ”Be strong, fair Zariah! I am coming to thy aid!” she prepared herself, mentally, for battle as she followed the hallway down, unconsciously dodging the traps, before stopping, confused. ”Where art thou?” she cried, looking into the kitchen and down the cavernous hallway. She couldn't see anything – no sign of monster or twin.
Beastdad clopped just behind her, wary – he was sure that Zariah's voice had been coming from the kitchen, and his ears – though not the best – were attuned to the strange echoes of their hive.
The kitchen?!
Keionx drew her sword and stalked in. Nothing. Not a thing moved, or touched. She rarely used the culinary block of her hive for much more than energy drinks, and it was pristine – not at all like a monster had been in there after all.
Which meant it was hiding. Obviously.
”Show thyself, fell monstrousity!” cried the little troll, challengingly, at the ceiling, drawing her sword, ”What hath thou done with mine twin?!”
Beastdad, watching, was very proud of his charge, but worried... where had Zariah gone?!

URGH! She made him so....ANGRY sometimes! Zariah had no misgivings about his own strength....he was weak. Okay.....probably worse than weak, hell he made grubs look strong....but he didn't need the constant reminder of what a weak fairlure of a troll he was! He didn't need some doting sibling hovering over him to tell him how weak he was and how he needed to be protected and pampered like some....PRINCESS! His nubby fingers twined in his tangled hair in frustration. It felt awful.....it felt like he'd been stuck in a room for the past few days and hadn't washed it. GREAT! Another thing to frustrate him! As if he really needed it....
After taking a deep breath Zari ran his cold hands over his face, sighing heavily as he tried to calm his anger. Snapping at her wouldn't do any good....she never had thoughts like his....hell, she probably didn't ever feel anything to any real depth! She was like an actor..playing her role. Devoted to being someone she heard about in stories.
"I'm in the dry storage facilities!" he responded, tone evening out. It was hard not to be angry with her when she couldn't be bothered to see the forest for the trees, ignoring the plain fact that he had trouble with her hive and instead pretending it in some way made him easier to protect. Like it was the moat of a castle protecting the princess from attack. Except that the princess wouldn't simply sit in the highest tower gazingly longingly at grass far from reach.

Keionx blinked, lowering her sword as she rounded towards the closed door. She wrenched it's heavy weight open and beheld her twin – angry, unwashed, scared, and pathetic. She raised a concerned eyebrow at him and held out a hand to help him out, though he was standing. ”Whatever...” she asked, confusing ringing out in her powerful voice, ”Art thou doing in there?” It seemed an odd place to be, odder still to be trapped in it...
Also, she couldn't let go of the idea that some monster had placed him inside. She looked around. ”Didst thou see a monster, my princess?” she asked, ready to protect him, should he need it.
He's been in here for a while... said the little sane, oft ignored voice at the back of her mind, judging from his appearance. And his smell. And the state of the foodstuffs.
Keionx, as usual, ignored it.
”If so, I shall slay it, and thou shalt be safe!” she reassured, smiling.

A monster......her PRINCESS! Zariah rubbed his eyes and tried to hold in the scream. He was so angry at her.....at HIMSELF! How shameful was it to get trapped in their hive?! Alone.....by himself.....without HIS lusus to protect him.
The small troll folded in on himself and breathed heavily. His head was spinning and he couldn't for the life of him tell if it was from eating poorly the last couple days, or possibly because he'd had so many times he'd needed to sit and focus on just breathing. Monster.....what a joke. She made him so angry he just.....couldn't even think properly!
If took the orangeblood a couple moments to realize she'd opened the door, even with the light suddenly illuminating the storage fascilities. He shakily got to his feet, hand on his spinning head. He couldn't decide how to react....he wanted to be angry, to scream, to blame her, to tell her how much she frustrated him with her foolish notions of knights and princesses.....but he also knew she was the only one he had. At the end of the day no one cared for him like she did, no one talked to him with those excited, ludicrous stories like she did. No one tried so hard to protect him for no reason other than selflessness like she did. He grit his teeth and took another deep breath.
"No. There was no monster...I just got stuck when I was getting something..." he said finally, voice far quieter and more restrained than before. She really did just want to help.....he couldn't fault her for that...even if she DID incredibly stupid things....

Keionx gave him a strange look. ”Art thou sure?” she asked, her tone surprised. It seemed so boring, to be stuck in a room just because the door closed on him and he couldn't move it because of those stupid weights in the doors that you KNOW he can't manage and STILL WON'T REMOVE... Weights be good for one's muscles, and thine strength shall saveth others! she retorted back at the little voice of sanity, which she then continued to ignore. Whatever the actual cause had been, Zariah had been trapped, and now he was freed – a good bit of heroism, that. She moved so that he could make his way out, gesturing theatrically (but completely seriously and good naturedly) that the path was open. ”Well!” she boomed, ”Thou art free now! And thee must see what we hath brought!”
