The weather had been getting colder in the last few weeks but it was only in the last day that Raven had noticed it. It's not that he hadn't perceived the change as it occurred, but it was only now that the cold had set in enough for him to truly feel it. Actually it had been kind of nice when it had started to cool down, it meant that the heat of summer was finally over and that fall had set in fully. Of course fall was coming closer to an end than a beginning, and so it was this extra chill in the air that signified that winter was not far off that had grabbed Raven's attention. The life of a wandered was never easy, but it could be especially difficult in the winter. It was at this point of the year that Raven tended to focus on finding an area that would serve him well for the winter months. It had to be a place with plenty of open ground so he could still wander about, but it also needed to often plenty of shelter and food to make it through those cold lean months.

Pausing in his walking, he preferred to travel by ground over air, Raven took in his surroundings. It looked pretty much like the hundreds of other places he had been to in the past. Trees, open spaces, a few rocks, the sounds of small creatures. He would start here and work his way south, since south tended to be a bit warmer in the winter than north, as north was closer to the mountains and that area could get heavier snow. Raven resumed walking, heading towards the trees, perhaps he would find what he needed here and not need to travel anymore. He snorted slightly at that, he would never stop traveling, winter merely slowed him down but it did not stop him.

The trees were dense enough here to bock out the heavy winds of winter but would let he keep an eyes out for anyone who approached. It reminded him a bit of the area he had grown up in. It had been quite some time since he had been "home". That made him think about his mother. She deserved to see him again soon. Perhaps he could manage to visit her before winter. It would do them both some good to see each other again and speak. While Raven didn't speak much to those he met in his travels he always had something to say around his mother. If she wasn't so attached to that place she called home he would bring her along on his journey through life. But he did make a point to visit her at least once a year. It was the one time when he was truly open and himself. If he could be like that around strangers then he would be a completely different stallion, but for some reason whenever he met someone he remained silent as much as he could. Old habits were hard to break. Turning around Raven left the trees, took a moment to gain his bearings and then turned west, he would visit his mother first and then find an area to stay throughout the winter.

His journey to his mother had gotten sidetracks almost immediately. For some reason Raven decided to do something else first. He wasn't sure why this change of plans had come to him, and so quickly, but it had. It made him pause, normally when he decided to go and see her nothing could stop him. Clearly this was something that he had to consider. Raven brought his hooves to a stop and allowed his mind to wander. Why had things suddenly changed? Had he done something recently that would make him change his mind so quickly, when the end result would be a good thing, he had always been happy after visiting his mother.

Giving his head a shake Raven began to walk once more. He began to think back on all the things he had done recently to try and figure out what had changed. Let's see here, he had been through several forests, a number of meadows, had even seen the ocean or time or two, but he honestly could not think of a single major event that would have changed him in some way. But maybe it was something small, something that he could easily look over and not realize that it was affecting him in some strange way.

Raven wandered for quite some more deep in thought, trying to decide what was going on and what he needed to do. Looking up he noticed that he had come to a crossroad...literally. The path he had been following now split into two paths, one heading north and one south. How appropriate, this life was full of uncertain paths and now so was his wandering way. With a sigh he looked in both directions, though both looked the same. After another few moments of thinking it, he finally turned south, he would see where this road led him.

Raven wasn't certain how long he had been traveling this way now, perhaps a couple of days. He hadn't been paying full attention to where he was going, like always, but now he brought his hooves to a stop and glanced about. If he didn't know any better, Raven might have thought he was where he began this journey a few days ago. That was one of the problems with not fully paying attention to the world around them, it meant they could get lost or simply spend their entire life wandering with no where to go. After looking around for a few moments for a sigh of where he truly was Raven decided this would be a good place to rest for a while.

He had rested along the way, but his body was tired and needed a good solid day of rest before continuing on. Spotting a small cluster of trees not far away that would be the perfect place to find the quiet he needed to rest and relax. Making his way over to the trees, Raven settled down. Tomorrow he would continue his journey...perhaps he would even figure out where he was going as well.

Waking the next morning Raven was feeling refreshed and ready to tackle another day of walking. After taking the time to eat and get a good drink from a nearby pond Raven set out once more. He still had no idea what his destination would be. He still planned to visit his mother, but the path he had chosen a few days ago had taken him further away from her instead of close, but he decided to go with it and see where this path led and then would visit her. Picking up the pace Raven decided to see how much ground he could cover today. The sooner he got this journey done the sooner he could start on his next one.
