Tonight was the big night. The semester was over, and this performance would serve to determine whether or not Moondance passed this year of dance school.
Needless to say, she was very, very nervous.
Moondance was worried that she wouldn't get it right. She felt like she usually made a lot of mistakes. Tonight, she wasn't going to be able to mess up. Passing meant everything to her. This was the biggest make or break moment the filly had ever had in her life.
Her name was announced, and she walked out onto the stage. Her poise was perfect, and her head was up high. She tried to ignore all of the people out there. The silence between the polite applause at her coming out and when the music started felt like forever.
She began to dance. It was a routine that she had practiced and practiced until she could almost do it in her sleep. Everything felt fluid and she moved with grace and emotion. As she danced, she saw not just her mother and father out in the crowd, but her entire extended family came to the recital.
Now she really felt the pressure to not mess it up. If Moondance wasn't nervous enough before, she certainly was now.
The routine went on, and she tried to block out everything but the music. She didn't even want to hear herself think. Thinking too hard about it would have been her downfall. She just knew she was going to fail, but she wasn't sure at which part. Like as if on autopilot, she flowed from move to move to spin to jump.
And then almost as quickly as she had started, it was over. It was over?! There was a thunderous applause. Moondance realized that she hadn't fallen, not even once! As gracefully as she could, she bowed, and walked off stage. Her emotions were running high, but she didn't want points deducted for not being professional.
Once backstage, she screamed. She couldn't control it anymore. Moondance couldn't believe how well she had done! All that focus and hard work were about to pay off!
She should have never doubted herself. It wasn't like she didn't think she could do it; she just wanted it to be perfect. She wanted to make herself and everyone else proud. Moondance always wanted to give her best. Anything less than that, and it wasn't worth doing.
It wasn't until later that night when she was home that her father nudged her and pointed at her flank. In all the excitement, she had gotten her cutie mark and hadn't even noticed! She gave him a big hug, and then ran around the house to show the rest of her family.
Not only had she aced the performance and the class, but she also had discovered her purpose in life!
