Hi there, I am going to aquire yet another instrument to play and I want to know what you think. Should I play a Bassoon or an Oboe? I already play a Clarinet, Alto Sax., and Flute, so this will be my fourth instrument... I can learn any complexity.... Thanks ^^

Honestly, I play the oboe, and I love it. I love the sound of it, and I don't htink its that hard.

Clarinet, Alto and flute are all high instruments. As is oboe so I would go for bassoon to balance you out a bit. But if you just prefer high instruments then learn oboe. Do you need to read bass clef for bassoon? It's a useful thing to be able to do anyway.

I would never touch a double reed just because it's a double reed. Way too expective and so much work to keep the reed going ><

I'm badly learning the oboe right now. I'm teaching myself so it's kind of hard, but I'm slooooooowly getting the hang of it. I'd try bassoon to kind of balance out the high/low thing like ice_illusion said.

Maybe you should take into account the fact that oboes can sound like a duck on helium. But if you play other instruments you have probably realised that harmonics exist so I guess you'd be ok. I only heard the oboe played properly for the first time a few months ago. All the pupil oboes gave up before they got to a decent standard. (A biology teacher joined (concert) band)

I say the Oboe. Mainly because I play it. x33; And it's pretty hard to get good at. So, if you master it, you can be all HAHA, I RULE YOU SUCK. >=D That's what I do. I'm evil. <33 But the Bassoon seems interesting aswell.

I'd go with bassoon. I jumped from clarinet to bassoon, and I found some of the fingerings relativly similar. You have to learn to read bass clef though.

Aren't oboes extremely expensive though, with bassoons even more?

I play oboe, but bassoon would be fun, but right now I'm laerning trombone for marching band. Flute and Alto have some of the same fingerings as oboe, so just pick one.

i went from clarinet to trumpet to bassoon, and i found the bassoon fingerings were harder than i was used to (going from 3 valves to like 30 keys.. sweatdrop ). i've heard that flute and oboe fingerings are extremely similar, so i guess it depends on if you want a challenge or not. personally, i think they both have an amazing sound when played well, so either would be fine. go double reeds!

I play bassoon and a little oboe, so it depends if you want to learn bass clef, unless you already know it. Oboe is more like flute and bassoon more like clarinet. It pretty much depends on what you prefer. I love bassoon, and oboes fun too, so either way it will be good.
