Being a flutter meant you were small as a default and being one that was a child meant you were even smaller. Happy Endings was one such flutter and standing in front of a two story bar and restaurant made him look even tinier. The foal stood outside one of the windows, hesitant for a moment to go in. It wasn't that he was worried he would be unwelcome in the establishment, but more that the trip felt like he was admitting defeat.

Taking a deep breath he headed towards the door, yanking it open with quite a bit of effort from his dainty hooves. Poking his head in, he peeked around Cloud 9 in search of the bar. He was on the search for a specific phony, one he knew worked here.

Fruit Punch has just finished making a round of drinks for a party in a booth toward the front of the bar. The unicorn stepped out from behind the bar, taking a tray to actually deliver the drinks to the table himself since actually knew all the phony there. He chit chatted with them for a minute and turned to head back to the counter when he spotted a familiar face from the corner of his eye, which made him surprised.

"Happy Endings, what're you doing here?" He greeted the flutter, tilting his head to beckon him inside. He had no clue why the boy was here, but he wanted to find that out for sure.

Hopelessly Pretty

The purple colt tossed his head in faux confidence as his curls fell around to frame his face. He brushed a few strands aside as he flew closer to the adult. Happy Endings cleared his throat, looking around the bar. "I'm here to hear some of your stories about your devious acts."

Yes, that was a great cover and something he could glean something from about how to please the mares and stallions. If he mentioned that his confidence was faltering, that all his test runs of attempts to woo were falling flat he would certainly look bad. He needed a clue, a clue as to what it was others wanted and sometimes there was something you just couldn't learn from books, despite what his parents might say.

"Oh, really? I didn't think I'd be seeing you so soon, but I'm glad I'll be able to help. Why don't you take a seat at the bar, and I'll make you some lemonade." He headed back behind the counter, getting things set up so he could make a glass for Happy Endings.

"Where do you want me to start? How I got close to those phony in the first place, or the details from when we were in bed? Oh yeah, either way, I'm not naming any names to spare myself any future embarrassment if you meet them someday."

His wings buzzed as he flew up onto a barstool, glancing down the counter he took note of all the different types of bottles backlit on the shelves. "Yes, well i figured i could use a new perspective as things..." He bit his lip before shaking his head. "Never mind."

The flutter snorted and raised an eyebrow, he would've flushed if he hadn't read so many of his mother's romance novels. "I'm not really old enough to need to know how to run properly in bed. Besides, i'd just assume you were exaggerating to make yourself look better."

The unicorn laughed at the comment that he would be exaggerating, shaking his head. "Well, you also aren't old enough for me to just show you how good I am, so I'll let it slide." Fruit Punch started to make some fresh lemonade for his guest, mentally measuring out the appropriate amounts of sugar, hot and cold water, and lemon juice as he worked. He thought about what specific advice he should give to the foal in front of him, and how precise he should be with his stories.

"Well, I can start with how I got closer to a crush of mine, that's now my girlfriend. It'll teach you about how you can approach someone when your feelings really are involved so it's easier to talk to them." He mixed the sugar and hot water, then the cold water and lemon juice before neatly combining it all, which he then poured into an iced glass for Happy Endings. He pushed it toward the foal for him to drink, looking forward to the results of the taste test.

The purple colt watched as the adult combined the ingredients and he rolled his eyes. "I'd only be interested if you had something good to offer anyway." He reached out for the drink as it was slid across the counter towards him. It took two hooves for him to hold it steady to his lips and puckered them as he sipped.

"Mmm, pretty good." Happy gave a small nod, ears flicking as he listened to the white stallion. "Ok. Tell me all the details. How did you gain her affections?"

The stallion looked satisfied when Happy Endings liked his lemonade, so with that he began his lesson for the day. "I met her on a walk through the park one night, of all places, but it's worked out perfectly since then. Picture it; you're walking down the path and minding your own business when a total babe comes up and starts talking to you. Any normal guy would probably get nervous, but there I was, playing it cool. The first step to getting a girl's attention is being completely natural no matter what your environment is. There's nothing creepier than a sweaty and stuttering guy, so make sure you have experience with a variety of different places in town."

He nodded sagely, agreeing with his own advice. Despite working at the bar, he always went out in his free time, and especially to new venues whenever they were open. "If you're cultured and find yourself comfortable everywhere, then it isn't hard to do the next part, which is actually talking to the person."

Happy Endings nodded along as Fruit Punch spoke, occasionally sipping his drink. This story all seemed very normal so far. It wasn't even particularly romantic, at least in comparison to the novels he'd read. "Handsome men don't sweat," he snorted, resting an elbow against the counter so he could prop his chin up on a hoof. "There's no way i'd get flustered enough that i would be so disgusting. Even if my many charms didn't seem to be having any effect."

The flutter glanced up and down the bar quickly then sighed. "I think i've read enough about different situations to be able to figure out how to behave smoothly regardless. The problem is..." He frowned, tilting his head so his cheek was slightly squished against his hoof. "My flatteries don't seem to be working. No one is taking me seriously."

The bartender hummed thoughtfully when the youth said the problem he was having genuinely stemmed from the talking aspect of 'the hunt'. If Happy Endings thought that he wasn't being taken seriously then it really didn't matter what he said; he'd have to find strengths in a variety of areas to overcome that one weakness. "Your age is definitely the first factor when it comes to hitting on phony older than you, Happy Endings. Luckily for you, I've also had experience with being a foal finding someone attractive that was an adult and I wanted them to get my point that I liked them."

Just the thought of his first encounter with Hydrangea made his stomach knot a little. It wasn't butterflies that's for sure, but the redhead looked off toward the windows a little distant as he spoke, recalling how he'd been caught stealing flowers from the landscaper's greenhouse but had charmed his way out of it, to some degree successfully. "Compliments really do work well, so you'll have to play them to your advantage... If you don't think telling the person that they're pretty will work alone, then compliment their personality or something else about them. Even if you meet them in an unsavory situation, you can turn it around if you bring the conversation to them instead. Get them to talk about themselves, and you can pinpoint those finer details into flattery for then or later. You don't have to come on full force if it'll just get you to a second meeting; sometimes it takes more than one piece of bait to get a solid bite on the line."

Happy was frustrated and he had never been entirely sure that Fruit Punch was actually going to be any help to him. His first impression of the adult had been rather poor and had quite led him to believe the advice was going to either be useful or mocking. However, it currently seemed like the adult was being sincere and the foal was appreciative.

"Well, the problem is i can't compliment their personality if i don't know them at all," he grumbled, glaring at the half empty lemonade glass in front of him. "What am i supposed to say in order to get them to tell me about themselves? In my momma's romance novels the women always just fall for the men with barely even a few words exchanged between them if any at all. Men just have to give them a smoldering look and they just come running," the flutter sighed. "Why can't that just work?"

"Sometimes you don't have to talk to make a compliment; it can be little things, like laughing at things they say, or a casual brush with your tail just to touch them for no reason at all. People like attention and all you have to do is figure out the best way to satisfy that, subtle or direct." Fruit Punch hoped that he was starting to make at least some sense to the boy, because there really wasn't just one solution to the problem. Some methods just had to be tested and tweaked according to each scenario and he knew Happy Endings would have to learn that eventually.

He leaned against the counter, resting on his elbows as he thought of another way to phrase it. "Smoldering looks can work, but not every girl is textbook. Is she shy, or is she confident? One may just want someone to listen to her talk, and the other may like someone she can compete with. Trust me, I wish it was simple too, but in all honesty that's just not how the real world works. There's a big difference between fact and fiction, my friend."

A subtle touch?

Huh...

Happy's lips pressed into a thin line as he thought on it. Gentle touches were pretty intimate, of course he'd have to be careful about the setting but... That actually might work. Especially if they were in some warm cabin alone in front of a fire.

The flutter cleared his throat, diverting his attention back to the unicorn from his own thoughts. "I suppose i'll just have to start out simply until i can get them to open up to me. Then i can press farther in a more specified way..." He sighed, rubbing his cheek. "Well, the books make it seem so much more interesting. I'd get what i want much faster."

The bartender smiled when it looked like Happy Endings had some sort of conclusion on how he should approach his future targets. It seemed like he'd been helpful after all and that actually made the unicorn's day a little bit brighter. Who knew that he liked helping kids? "Looks like you've got what you need to get it done right next time, Happy Endings. Make sure to get some practice and I think you'll do just fine."

Fruit Punch glanced up from the foal to two new customers walking into the bar, which he raised a hoof to in greeting. Once they were comfortably seated at a table he brought his attention back to the flutter in front of him. "Any other problems I can help you solve, or is that it for today?"

Thanks Hope!

The flutter hummed thoughtfully, following the bartender's gaze as customers arrived. It seemed like it was time for him to go, but at least he had more of a plan of attack than when he'd entered. Wings flicking, he pushed out of his seat. "I think i'm good. Thank you for your help, Fruit Punch." He gave a nod to the adult and headed for the door.
