Pisces regretted having to patrol at night sometimes. Schoolwork this season got harder and sleep was precious and rare, but somehow she hadn't died and wasn't failing. All the same, Pisces wasn't usually so slow or tired - instead of alert she had brought along a small thermos of coffee, and was currently walking along a patrol route sipping it.

Coffee was far from her favorite drink, but sometimes she simply sucked it up tonight and sipped away, humming to herself as she slipped along, avoiding being seen. She was very stealthy, she thought - and if anyone asked she could lie and tell them she was going to a costume party.

Because people did that, of course.

Captain Merlinite was ready to burst.

He was not sure how much stress one human being was supposed to endure, even one imbued with the dark power of Chaos, but he was almost certain he had surpassed that amount some time ago. With Gently, General Painite, living with him and needing him to tend to her day and night just to make sure she didn't stop being alive, he had a lot on his mind.

He had even turned to senshi for help. The one that had been healing Painite in small doses was doing her best, and he did legitimately appreciate her help with that, but it was not enough, and Merlinite needed to find a more powerful healer, if there was one to be found.

It was times like this that he wished he had formed more contacts, made more allies in odd places: he felt helpless and isolated, not knowing who to turn to.

And he had to keep up with his usual patrol and quota, or someone would think something was up and that was not something he could risk. Painite told him not to let anyone know she was alive, not Nega or Senshi. He had to listen to her.

He sensed the aura of a senshi not too far from him, and moved toward it. He was either going to find someone who was going to help him, or someone he could take some pent out aggression on. At this point, he didn't care either way.

Pisces felt the chaos aura, and promptly began to tense up, looking around with the kind of apprehension a feral animal had, turning slowly and swallowing, careful not to rustle her skirts and petticoats too much, and the Zodiac swallowed, blinking as she turned before crossing her arms.

"I know you're there." She said, trying - and failing miserably - to sound terrifying.

"Of course you know I'm here, and I know you're there. Great work, detective."

Merlinite prowled toward her, noting that she looked different to what he was used to. Or was it something else? He could not put his finger on it, but he did not really care right now. He did not care about anything beyond getting through all the trouble put in front of him.

This senshi was either going to help him, or at the very least be a nice distraction.

"Are you a healing senshi?" he asked, point blank. That was an important question. He summoned his club to his hand as he waited for an answer, turning it around slowly in his palm as he felt a spark of anxiety move through him. He hardly knew how to act, and did his best to just stop thinking about anything.

Pisces frowned when Merlinite stepped out, but was grateful that she didn't have any chibis to worry herself over, nor did she have to fear a general - he didn't look quite as high-powered as Buddingtonite, and that in and of itself was something she was grateful for, although she didn't reflect it any more than shifting.

She had to think on his question, simply based on how unusual it was. Why an agent of the Negaverse wanted a healing senshi she didn't know - but she did know it was unusual, and for a moment she considered the answer before frowning. What if they wanted to kill their healers, or worse? While not sure she knew any, she decided not to risk someone being kidnapped.

"I am not." Pisces responded finally, after what felt like hours. "I don't know of any either."

Well it was a truth, but Pisces remained on her guard, watching Merlinite carefully. He had a weapon.

Weapons weren't a good sign at all, and she glanced around for any weapons she might use to protect herself.

"Then I guess you're not useful to me on any front," he said with a shrug.

He actually found it hard to tell himself this was what he needed. Before all this happened, fighting Senshi was all too easy for him, and he liked his job. He wanted to excel, and he still did, but there were new and confusion bumps in the road for him to try and climb over. Like this sudden idea that Senshi could be his friends.

That he actually liked them.

True enough, he had one friend in a senshi since the get go, and that was Mintaka. He had always thought of her as the exception to the rule: that he could be friends with her and still hate all other senshi. But now this Lysithia had helped with with Gently so far... it was getting harder to justify attacking senshi when they were helping him so much.

No, he had to just keep focused. He lunged at her suddenly, as if to reassure himself through action alone, that he was still as Nega as he always had been.

"So I'll take your starseed instead!"

There it was, the sign that he was up to no good... As usual, Pisces was learning, for the Negaverse.

She had yet to find good in them since awakening, young and afraid and now nothing was getting better, enough that Pisces had expected and attack, and, using her experiences in owning shoes, she used her heels to pivot rapidly and jump aside, ignoring decorum in her skirt to kneel, before frowning.

"Not today!" She hissed. However, at least he came from in front - that helped.

A little.

"Alright, you little brat. I didn't come out here looking for a fight, but now I think I could really use one, so at least you'll know you were useful for one thing before I beat you to a pulp, alright?"

He gripped his spiked club and tested its weight in his hand, though to him it was just like an extension of his fist. He knew many Negaverse soldiers ended up feeling the same way about their weapons, so it only made sense. Still, he was glad he had gotten something useful from the get go, and not something stupid.

Fighting had always been one of his favorite things, after all. Now, it was getting to be a little different, but still.

He moved to attack her again, this time swinging low for her midsection, and trying to keep his mind off his thoughts. Focus on the fight, and doing his job, and not let anything else distract him. Make things simple again.

"More U-" but Pisces didn't get a chance to retort as the club connected with her stomach, a couple spikes tearing her uniform and giving her some deep cuts for the result, and Pisces frowned as adrenaline spiked. Pisces wasn't muxch of a fighter, but she could be an opportunist, and the senshi grabbed a stick rapidly, swinging for Merlinite's hand clumsily. Unlike Merlinite, she both lacked skill, nor did she fight as often, but she still put her best effort out and the Senshi remained scowling. She didn't quite know how to escape with things as they were - few items were weaponizeable unless she removed a high heel - but she was thinking of things to try scaring him off - that is, if she could hide first. For now, however, she had to think of fending off her attacker.

Merlinite had to admit, his emotions got oddly clear when he was in a fight. He forgot all the conflict in his brain, all the trouble he thought fighting was going to bring him, and lost himself to the actions. He felt nothing but the thrill of the fight, and how good it was to be doing something he had once enjoyed, and was actually good at.

It made everything seem more simple, knowing where he stood in the world. He was the good guy, they were the bad guys, and he was doing the right thing. Of course, when the fight was over and his brain clicked back into reasonable gears, he would have to think long and hard about all of that.

"You going to actually make this a challenge, Senshi, or am I going to beat you to a blood, unrecognizable pulp without so much as a protest?" He watched her with a dark expression, gripping his club so tightly his knuckles pained him.

He was forcing himself into this mentality, into the fight, and he couldn't back down now.

Pisces was on her feet rapidly, and scowled at Merlinite sharply. Her mind had shifted gears fully as a dainty white-gloved hand wped her cheek absently, adrenaline blocking pain receptors, and she hissed. This was one of the monsters from Barren Pines, a monster that killed and mocked the dead, and while Pisces lacked a distinct advantage of offensive attacks, she didn't lack creativity, and quite quickly the young senshi swept out with a kick, lips curled as she remained eerily, fgor her, quiet, eyes locked.

She didn't styop to think Merlinite might not know- all she saw was the same monsters that killed - killed Saggitarius, her classmates, her court - over and over in her mind as she hissed, the only noise to come from the senshi.

And perhaps it was for the best, lest a feral snarl escape her throat.

Merlinite frowned at the senshi. So, what? He'd broken her or something? Not much of a return attack, no witty comments, just a weird sound that a human being should not be making. He was not sure this was going to be a very useful fight to him, at the end of the day, as she did not seem to know what she was doing.

He scowled, annoyed that nothing could just be easy. The lines were all blurry these days, and he did not know who was an enemy, or even what he expected in one any more. There was always some excuse brewing in the back of his mind for why he could not attack someone.

It was bullshit, quite frankly, and he hated the way he was waffling about. When did he get so soft?

"Game over, Senshi. Time to end this." He charged at her again, since that had been working so far, and took a swing for her head. Spiked clubs and heads, he knew, generally did not get along.

This time, this time Pisces was ready to attack, and to retaliate, and the senshi rolled to one side, turning to Merlinite to pull her high heel off, hissing. She was furious and, in some corner of her mind, purely enraged, and the senshi swung for Merlinite with the heel of the removed shoie, aiming to try stabbing or swiping him with the hardened end of the high heel roughly.

Her attack may only be good for diversions, but the senshi could weaponize her shoes if nothing else, and she growled softly as she did so.

Granted, Merlinite's assessment was accurate. Time away did not mean she knew what she was doing - she didn't have the experience or training some senshi did - although emotional truama wascertainly a factor. She had anger, and she had raw energy and adrenaline and pain to drive her, and in that end, her moves were still sloppy, limited, and, for lack of a better description, terrible.

"Are you serious?"

Merlinite moved to smack his club into her shoe, not sure what she was thinking. She had no other option but to try and hit him with a freaking shoe? Senshi really had it rough some times, he had to admit that. No weapon, and sometimes their magic sucked, too. Of course, the Negaverse ended up with some pretty terrible 'weapons' when they started, too, but hey.

"Listen kid, you're in over your head here. Why are you even out here if you can't fight anyone? Do you think we all want to kill you for no reason? Don't make it so goddamn easy!"

Merlinite was not sure what he was talking about, but the words were falling out of his mouth without his consent. His own emotions, like hers, were getting the better of him, and he actually stopped attacking her while he was yelling, dropping his guard for a moment.

Pisces used the moment to jump away, clutching her now rather holey shoe tightly as she panted, scowling.

"No reason? Like rounding people up like cattle and murdering them is when they did nothing wrong is a reason?"

She worked to catch her breath, glaring.

"That's all the Negaverse is - murderers and thieves. They don't need reasons!"

Admittedly, before Barren Pines, had life gone differently, Pisces may not have awakened, or, if she had, it might not have been while people died around her. When her court--

But there was no dwelling on what-if, only now. Now was an agent trying to kill her, yelling as if she had done some wrong. And it was not exactly easy to communicate when logic was booking a one way flight on an airline to CIstanbul.
