Lockes

It had started out as such a pleasant day, what with the sun in the sky, the birds singing, and flowers seemed to pop up everywhere Lockes looked. It had been so pleasant and Lockes had been so content, that she almost could've said it was perfect.

That was, until she came across a merry young mare, rolling around in a patch of grass and dirt. Lockes had gone rigid when she saw the coat of the mare. It was covered in a fine layer of dust from her muzzle to her hooves, and Lockes was suddenly very alert to the dirt below her hooves, and to the mess of nature around her. Her breath became short and uneven, and her pupils dilated.

"E-Excuse me, Miss?" She croaked, approaching the other mare. "You've got a... a spot of dirt on your coat. If you'll just settle down, I'm sure I could get it off for you." It would take a while, what with that amount of dirt, but Lockes was sure that she could do it.

The mare didn't seem to pay attention to her, however, so Lockes advanced, raising her voice to a strangled shout.
"Please, just let me help you! I can make you pretty again, I promise! I can make you perfect!"

It was only when she brandished her blade towards the other mare did the dusty mare look up in alarm. Light glinted off of the blade and the mare looked quite menacing at that moment. Lockes, by that point, was muttering,
"I'll make you perfect. You'll be perfect. Perfection is key, you know and I'll make you perfect. You'll be..."

As she approached the other mare, she was only distantly aware that the other mare had started screaming. The screaming then faded to silence, and red flowers blossomed from the dusty mare's flanks.

Abdiel

User Image

Abdiel was enjoying the lovely day, with the sunshine and cool breeze, and he wanted to go to the meadow to eat some grass and to look at the flowers. For some reason, there didn't seem to be many others out and about, probably they were all enjoying the fine day elsewhere, and Dionysus was still sleeping, and so Abdiel headed to the meadow alone.

Just before he reached the grassy clearing, he heard something he was not expecting. It sounded like a scream. Immediately he began to run towards the source of the scream. It sounded like someone was in trouble. He hoped it wasn't hunters.

What he saw when he reached the meadow both surprised him and disturbed him. The scream had come from a mare. There was another mare with her, a crazed looking white and blonde mare, and she was brandishing a knife. There was blood everywhere. Abdiel had seen knives before in some of the villages he had visited. Humans used them quite often for cooking and other practical things, but he had never seen a soquili get ahold of one before. They had no need for such things. And this knife was huge, designed for cutting meat.

The screaming mare let out one last agonizing whinny before silence fell and the mare slumped to the ground, motionless. The grass, the flowers, and the white mare with a curious blue blanket fashioned around her back were all covered in red. Abdiel almost witnessed the scene through a haze. A haze of confusion, fright, and anger. Why had this happened? He had known soquili to fight before, but this was just brutal. There was no excuse for it. Abdiel dashed towards the mare, ready to confront her.

"Hey! What do you think you're doing?" he called. He would get to the bottom of this. And perhaps the other mare was alright. There could be a slim chance. Abdiel couldn't just let her die, he needed to help. And he couldn't let that mare with the knife get away.

Lockes

Everything was quite alright now. A wave of calm was rushing over the mare, her grip on her knife loosening. She felt her body starting to relax and her head dip down towards her chest. Finally, everything was perfectly perfect and she could finally breathe easy now. Thank goodness.

But then things were not perfect, because as her head began to tilt down, she saw herself covered in filth! She was reeling back, her teeth clenching down around the blade with wild, frantic eyes. Water! She had to get to a stream or a river, even a lake would do, in order to wash this mess off of her fur.

As though her physical state weren't awful enough, she heard someone yelling at her. Through misty eyes (wouldn't you be crying and confused if you had mysterious redness on you, and you didn't know how it came to be?) she saw the shape of another coming towards her, and for whatever reason, this Soquili looked angry.

She couldn't let an angry Soquili assault her! They could be raving mad! So, she let out a very alarmed cry, almost dropping her knife in the process, and then turned and fled, jumping over a clump of sparsely grown bushes. She felt branches and leaves attach to her mane and tail as she ran, and she hated it! She paused only briefly, hoping to hear the trickle of water nearby, and she almost collasped with relief when she heard it.

She followed the sound to a wide, but shallow river, placing her blade at the other end of the shore. She wouldn't lay down and roll as she normally would, for the other Soquili might still be in pursuit.

Why was he chasing me? She wondered, shivering both from fear and from the cold river. I've done nothing wrong! Maybe he was a territorial stallion? She hadn't the fainted. She only knew that as soon as she was clean and therefore perfect again, she would run from this place and never visit it again, no matter how lovely the birds could sing.

The mare let out a yelp and ran away from Abdiel, a sure sign in his eyes that she knew that what she had done was evil. Only the guilty ran away. Or the scared. Was she crying?

She was fast, but Abdiel did his best to keep up with her. She might have gotten away if she hadn't paused for a brief moment. What was she doing? Abdiel ran after her and hoped against hope that he had made the right choice to pursue her and leave the injured mare behind. Hopefully he could come back and help her aftet he caught the culprit; though he wasn't sure what he was going to do when he did. He hadn't thought about that yet. He had fought hunters though; a mare with a butcher's knife wouldn't be so different he hoped.

Finally coming to the river he stopped on the shore and looked out where she stood, half submerged in water, shivering. Her knife was on the opposite shore and Abdiel thought about trying to reach it, but any attempt to get it and she would surely be there before him. He stood his ground on the shore and called out to her. "I saw what you did! Why did you do it? What had she done to you?"

Lockes

She hadn't managed to lose him. He had found her and now she was trapped. She could quite easily make it from the river to her blade and then out into the open again, but she would rather die than have to leave without cleaning the blood from her coat.
I might get that wish. Lockes thought, fear in her wide, red eyes, If I stay around any longer.

Then he spoke of something quite peculiar and the fear in her eyes seemed to waver. What she had done? What "she" had done to her? What was he going on about? Oh... This stallion was raving mad. Literally, he seemed to be crazy and very mad. Evidently at her. But why?

"Puh-Please, Sir." She bumbled, her body tightening up as she tried to look smaller, "I don't understand what you're saying. Why're you looking at me so? Please, what's happened?" She didn't understand a lot of things, but if there was the chance that this stallion would explain why he was pursuing her in such haste, than maybe she could determine fully whether he was totally off his haunches or not.

After a bit of hesitation, she added, "Are... Are you going to kill me? If I've done to you some wrong, I'm sorry, but I don't know what it is that I've done, and... and..." It was no use. Her eyes welled up with tears and she let out a small whimper, her ears pressed against her head, which lowered as she looked at the unicorn stallion. Weren't unicorns supposed to be gentle and just healers?

Abdiel stared at the mare for a moment in disbelief. Was she really going to play dumb about it?

"You mean to tell me..." he began in a huff, but stoped when she started crying and pleading for her life.

"Kill you? Why would I...?"

'Damnit,' he thought, 'What the hell is going on.' Part of his mind was still on the fallen mare in the meadow. He didn't know if it was too late to help her, or if he even could. He had never properly learned to heal.

He took a deep breath and sighed, calming himself. Taking a good look at the mare, he noticed her wide, somewhat crazed, but honest eyes. Did she really not understand?

"Look at yourself," he told her. "Is that not blood that covers your coat? Is that not blood running from your fur and into the water? And the blade on the other bank, that's yours isn't it? It's covered in blood as well. There's a mare, slain in the meadow, do you not know of her?"

Lockes

Lockes didn't want to listen to this stallion. Every fiber of her being was telling her to run hard and fast, to get away and to never return to this area again. Maybe she could find someone willing to help her, willing to protect her from this lunatic! But her knees threatened to buckle and she couldn't seem to see any means of an escape route and then he was talking and his words filled her head.

She shut her eyes and her head thrashed from side to side,
"I don't understand, I haven't done anything wrong! I'm perfect, I'm perfect, I'm--I-I-" And then the memories began to trickle in from behind her closed eyes. She saw the dirty coat, the stray mane hair, the burr in a tail, but they weren't all from the mare in the meadow, they were from other Soquili too, mares and stallions alike. They came in a variety of colors, but after Lockes spoke with them, they were all red.

Her eyes opened wide in terror and the whites of her eyes rolled backwards as she let out a hysterical scream.
"No, no, NO! That wasn't me, that couldn't have been me! I never meant to kill anyone, I only wanted them to be perfect! I only wanted them to be beautiful. A life covered in filth is not a life worth living, anyone with a brain could see that, but... Oh gods, oh no, oh no..."
And so she collasped in the river, her eyes wild and her body shaking. This unicorn was going to kill her for her crimes, wasn't he? That's why he was here, wasn't it? There was no other reason, she was certain and she was blubbering like a newborn foal and her cries were shrill and...

After a while she became quiet. She was scared, of course, but she was alive and she was calmer than she had been.
"So," She turned her gaze up towards the black and blue unicorn, "What will you be doing to me then?"

My muse has just been coming and going...mostly going XD But I am here! <3

Abdiel watched in frozen astonishment as the mare thrashed and screamed in the water. For a moment her eyes rolled back and she seemed to go unconscious and Abdiel, not knowing what else to do, got into the water with her. But then she was thrashing again, so before getting too close Abdiel tried to calm her down, but it seemed that the mare was lost in her own head. She was muttering things he did not quite understand. One thing became clear to him though: the mare was not right in the head; killing was not something she had meant to do. Still, Abdiel had to be wary of her.

"Please, calm down! Shhh, shhh...it's going to be okay!"
he neighed softly, hoping that no one was around to hear her screaming. To an onlooker now, this situation would not look good for him.

Finally she calmed down, and gazed at him. Abdiel felt sorry for her, and he wanted to help her. He approached her cautiously.

"You need to get out of the water and maybe lie down for a moment. You look very tired. I'm sorry if I startled you. Please, let me help you." He wanted to guide her to the shore, preferably the one that did not have the knife laying on the ground. Perhaps now was as good a time as any to try out his healing powers; perhaps they could soothe a troubled mind if he tried.
