History. It was the last class of the day and generally not one he particularly minded. At least it wasn't one that he usually minded since he'd staked out the desk by the front in the corner away from the window and his teacher was one that was good at making things interesting.
His teacher had been sick today and the substitute teacher had to be the most boring person around, kind of like how the Harry Potter books had described Professor Binns as being - except 'Professor Binns' in this case was not ancient or a ghost. Instead she had blonde hair and a pearl and daisy glasses chain on her glasses that (to his opinion) looked kind of silly.
He had been glad when the last bell of the day had finally rang, signalling the end of classes and grabbing at his stuff he shoved them in his backpack in double quick time, escaping the thought that was topmost in his mind as he made a beeline for the door.

School, for all intents and purposes, was his reprieve from his brother Thomas and his father and oldest brother as well. Not that he disliked anyone but Thomas, but being the youngest 'man' in the house was a weight school lifted, even if he was wanting soccer season to begin again, and when the last bell rang, Daniel had been half glad - class was boring - and half disappointed - now he had homework. His pace down the hall was slower than most and not one he was particularly looking to incre3ase, but he also wasn't watching around, and all but squeaked when he was almost run over by someone in more of a hurry than he "Ahh!"

With the end of class also came homework, which wasn't great but he had a whole week before he had to turn the assignment in and hopefully their normal teacher would be back by then - hopefully - because Briar really didn't want to sit through another Professor Binns-esque type history class. After all Harry Potter was great and all and he'd enjoyed reading through the books (at least the books that he'd reached up to having gotten as far as the third book in the series), but that didn't mean that he wanted his very own real life experience of some of the characters.
Out of class, he'd been making his way quickly down the corridor, not quite running but certainly at a pace that was not that far off, his mind more on thinking on what to do next than on his surroundings. He could go home, rummage through the cupboards for a snack and perhaps play a video game or two or (if he was being really good) make a start on today's assignment... Then again if he was going to do that then he could as easily head over to the library and do the same thing. It would be quiet at this time and he could go to his corner there, maybe also pick out a book or two for himself for fun too.
The book or two for fun was tempting, making Briar lean towards the library as being a thing... Well at least until another boy suddenly loomed up in his vision from out of nowhere causing thoughts of what to do with after school to be abandoned in favour of not slamming into the other.
"Hey, watch out" he said automatically as impeding collision was avoided by pretty much a whisker, but then at the other boy's squeak he turned and perhaps because he hadn't been paying attention and knew that he hadn't he turned towards the other boy, a slight sheepishness slipping into his earlier prickly voice as he said "Ah sorry about that. Are you okay?"NovaCracker I fixed the start post - duplicate sentences are the worst xD

Daniel made absolutely sure nobody saw before nodding slowly, feeling a little awkward at himself for being so undignified as to squeak. "S-yews." Daniel said, slowly getting up before gathering his backpack. "Just - surprised. Are you okay?" Daniel tilted his head slowly, blinking a bit in concern at the question. "You looked a little spaced. I think..." Daniel hadn't, admittedly, gotten a good look at him.

Watching as the other boy gathered up his backpack, a part of Briar wondered if he should be offering the other a hand. It was something that Mum and Dad would expect him to do and he knew it - could even hear what his Mum would say, if she'd been here to see the near miss."Briar, go and help that boy" she'd tell him. "It's only right that you do so given that you almost ran into him." And she'd probably give him a lecture about not paying attention. But... But his Mum wasn't here and his Dad wasn't either and Briar knew that if he had been the one to have to pick up a bag, then he'd prefer to do so without the help - especially if like the other boy he'd said he was okay.
So he had stood awkwardly and shifted a little from toe to toe, whilst trying not to be too obvious about it.
He looked over at the other boy's question, realising as he looked him over properly that he thought he recognised him from some of his classes. "I'm fine" he said in answer to the other's question about being okay, before adding a little indignantly "And I wasn't spaced" his voice turned awkward "I just wanted to get out of history class, since it was so boring this afternoon."

Daniel appreciated the non-interference, at least, he would if he knew why. However Briar's awkward shifting did make him inwardly puzzle as he finished, loading his books and standing fully before blinking. "I had history this morning." Daniel admitted. "I fell asleep!" While on any given day he wasn't terribly interested in most history, today with the substitute was significantly worse, and Daniel had been grateful to be unseen for the boring substitute. She could afford to learn to be interesting - and maybe talk about really interesting history besides. He blinked at Briar thoughtfully then, head tilting. "Aren't you in one or two of my classes?" Daniel had no problems being candid- not really. He supposed it was not helped by his powered life, but it never did backfire yet, even if his phrasing was horrible.

"I wish I had fallen asleep" Briar admitted. "It would've made class go faster, but I sit in front so she would have probably noticed." Because although his chosen desk wasn't the one directly in front of the teacher's desk, it was still a front desk. He continued "But hopefully Teacher will be better by next class so we don't get her again." Because one lesson had definitely been one lesson too many.
There was a considering look in his reddish eyes at the other boy's question about classes which had echoed his own thought previous "Perhaps," he said after thinking on it for a moment, adding. "I think I've seen you about" although that could as easily been school corridors as much as classes thinking about it. "Do you have Maths first period on Fridays?"

"Front desks in boring classes are the worst." Daniel admitted. Then he thought on Briar's question a moment before nodding. "Uh huh. I do. It is very, very boring but I can't sleep. Too close to the front" Because sadly, without proper motivation, Daniel often didn't grasp the lesson - easily a bad situation instigator at home, where parents could scold poor grades. "I'm not greatv at math though, so I sit closer."

Front desks in boring classes were the worst, although Briar couldn't really complain since he had purposely chosen said front desk on account of the fact that he got to get the desk to himself. Although it didn't change the fact that sleeping would've have made the boring history class go faster.
"I sit up in front in maths too" Briar admitted. "The desk to the right, up by the door." Maths and history were the only classes where he snagged the front desks, Briar usually opting for one of the back seat desks. Front seat in both those classes meant that he got those particular desks to himself though - at least he did unless doing group classwork.
"I don't really mind maths" he added, before admitting "Although it's not my favourite class either."
His favourite class would be swimming. At least it would be if it was an official class - which unfortunately it wasn't.

"Oh, you're very close then." Daniel nodded eagerly. "I sit a few desks away." He grinned, relaxing a little bit. Finally, a classmate he LIKED. "Mmm, I prefer P.E. At lerast, on fo-soccer days." He looked sheepish at nearly calling it football, almost forgetting American names differed at times. "Do you play soccer? Or - sports?" Daniel tilted his head curiously, still grinning. Not like it mattered - this boy was okay! - but he had PRIORITIES.

PE wasn't really one of Briar's favourite classes either, but that was more the whole group thing that came with it rather than the sport thing - he rather liked the sport thing. The sport thing however tended to come with the group thing - the big group thing and to say that the big group thing wasn't something that Briar was fond of was probably something of an understatement - Briar hated doing big groups.
He tilted his head curiously in return at the other boy's question "Soccer? Like they play in England?" Adding "Only what we do in school" before continuing. "But I swim outside of school" his reddish eyes brightened and there was an enthusiastic note in his voice as he added. "I go to the pool every weekend - it's really neat there." Not for competitions or anything, but because he really, really liked swimming.

He Understood. Daniel nodded, beaming and grinning. "I go swimming sometimes. Especially when we visit my grandparents in Mexico. They have a pool nearby to swim in when it is hot!" But he did have to dodge Thomas who persistently said he would drown him. ... He HOPED his brother was joking, anyhow. "Oh, but is the pool open in Winter? Isn't it cold then?"

"Going to the pool in the summer is good" Briar said. "Not as good as the water park, but good" he grinned. "The water park is the best - they have the curly slides and everything. I go every summer." Sometimes his parents took him and sometimes his big brother - well okay mainly his big brother took him - although next summer Briar was hoping that he'd be able to take himself. After all he was 12 - not a baby.
He nodded at the other's question about the pool "Yes I go to the pool and it's open all the time" he thought about it for a moment before admitting "Well not all the time - it's closed at times like Christmas time and stuff - but it's open so often that it feels like it's open all the time."
He continued "And they heat the pool water in winter so it's not really that cold." It wasn't super warm or anything, but it wasn't ice cold either.

"Oooohhh!" Daniel perked, grinning. "I have not been to a water park." He confessed. "I don't know if they have them in Mexico City. I hope so - that sounds lots of fun." Daniel beamed excitedly, listening as Briar described the pool. "How do you keep warm afterwards? I know when I play football-" Briar clearly knew the proper name! "-in winter I have to wear long pants and a coat." Even at 12, his mother fussed. A lot.

"Well as I said the pool's not really that cold" Briar wasn't sure whether the other boy was referring to at the pool or outside as in on the way to or on the way home from the pool and so after considering it for a moment he let his answer cover both "But they have showers with lots and lots of hot water" well at least they always seemed to have lots of hot water when he used them.
"And I wear jumpers and stuff on the way too." He made a face. "Mum gets fussy about it." Well at least she did when she was around, then again his Mum got fussy about a lot of things when she was around such as not sneaking cookies before dinner and making a big deal about the need to bundle up in this weather.
Bundling up in this weather was like a big deal thing for his Mum and when she was around she tended to get fussy about coats and scarves and the need to wear them even though he was perfectly able to dress himself and hated wearing the red and green scarf because it was woollen and tended to itch which was annoying.NovaCracker sorry for taking so long to tag you back Nova
