Once school was finally done for the day, Briar had made his way towards the library with the intention of holing himself up for a bit and maybe doing some work on his new homework assignment - at least that was the plan, although there was the chance that he might grab some books and do a bit of reading - or maybe even do both - after all his parents were both still out at work and even though Mum had mentioned being back early there was still about a hour and a half between the time now and the time she'd told him that she'd be home.
It didn't bother Briar, he was used to his parents being out since they were almost always working and even on the rare days that his Mum was 'early', early was generally relative and meant that she would just do work stuff at home.
He'd meant to head straight to the library, but had been distracted by a bakery along the way, a bakery with chocolate chip cookies in the window. He'd ended up taking of his backpack so he could rummage inside for his little wallet so that he could check and see if he had enough to pick up a couple to take along with him.
Because if Briar had a weakness for anything it was chocolate chip cookies. Warm and gooey just out of the oven was best - but even if they weren't like that they were still good - after all chocolate chip cookies were chocolate chip cookies.Quote: I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to get this up Lizzy, let me know if anything needs changing

Mother had scheduled a visit with Howl that evening. Such an appointment meant that Howl needed to go purchase a few things for her before she arrived. Flowers for ambiance were never an issue with all the potted plants he kept in his condo. Tea was simple enough since he always kept a bountiful supply for himself. However, his mother enjoyed cakes with her tea, and that was where the lad was severely lacking.
He could have gone to the market to get the cakes, but in his experience, he found that those cakes were rarely fresh enough for his mother. She always seemed to find them dry and lacking in taste. It was only once he had switched to the cakes at a local bakery that his mother had been thoroughly appeased.
His choice in clothing today had been a turtle neck accompanied by a pale blue sweater and a white scarf. The weather had been getting rather chilly with the shift towards winter. Howl was nearly at the bakery when he started to regret not putting on gloves as well.
As the teal-haired fellow approached his choice in bakeries, he saw a child digging through a backpack in front of the bakery window. It wasn't unusual for a child to be outside, scrounging up money to get themselves a treat, but with the weather as it was, the lad couldn't help but speak up.
"I assure you that the bakery does not mind you going inside while investigating your funds."

Backpack rummaging was perhaps not the most efficient way to go about hunting down his errant wallet, particularly since Briar tended to ascribe to the 'lets cram everything in' method when it came to packing his up and so although he'd managed to come across a couple of library books, his pencil case, a school book and a fox head pen top that he'd picked up a couple of weeks back that was still in its wrapper, he was still yet to come across his (so far) elusive wallet.
The pencil case in particular had been particularly disappointing as he had really thought that he'd managed to find the wallet when his hand had brushed against it, but when he had pulled it out he had ended up with red and black rather than the green that was his wallet.
Maybe upending the bag would have been better (and quicker), but whereas Briar was happy enough to do that at home and then stuff everything back it, today he was outside and it was cold and he didn't really want to spend extra time having to shove everything back in - particularly as he wasn't wearing gloves.
It was out of choice - the mitten style gloves that his Mum had replaced his previous (and now worn out) fingerless gloves with not really his style and yes they were lined and therefore warm, but they were also ugh - cute and the mitten style meant that they weren't really practical for doing stuff with...
In short it wasn't yet cold enough that Briar felt obliged to wear them.
Caught up in his bag rummage, Briar wasn't really paying attention to those around him and so the voice speaking up behind him after he'd come across and shoved the wrapped pen top back in the bag for what felt like the nth time came as a surprise.
He looked round and up at the source of the voice, the speaker a teal-haired lady dressed in sweater and a white scarf. "I'm good where I am," he told her as he wondered at the weird way at which she spoke - after all who used 'investigating funds'? He wrinkled his nose. He knew that funds equaled money and investigation meant looking for things so wouldn't it make more sense to say look for money? At least it did in his book - less words too.Quote: Sorry I missed this, Gaia's not always notifying me when threads I've started have been posted to :<

Howl felt a hair stray from the usual bunching around his eyes, and casually brushed his fingers through the hair to smooth the strand back into place. He couldn't help but feel that the child must have been obstinate, if only because of how the weather was. Rather than attempt to encourage the lad once more to entering the bakery to keep warm, the elder of the pair moved onto a different topic. "This is an excellent bakery. Have you ever been here before?" There was a vague pause as he considered something before he added "Might I ask what were you looking to purchase?" litian Sorry for the delay on my end. It had taken more poking around than he'd been planning but Briar was finally able to locate his wallet and pulled the shark adorned thing out with a small crow of success to himself. He still had a small smile on his face as he looked over at the lady.
"I come here a lot" he admitted, continuing "They do good cookies" and then because he couldn't help himself he added "Why are you using so many words anyway lady?" Because she could have asked the same questions without adding all the extra words.Quote: I am not any better Lizzy. Apologies for taking so long to tag this

Howl had to pause rather drastically with a blink to take a look over his current outfit. With as shapeless as the sweater made his upper body, he could easily understand the confusion about his sex. Though his pleasant smile still remained upon his lips, there seemed to be a bit of wear at the corners. First, he addressed the actual question. "I was raised in a household where manners were key. The expectations did include the use of a more eloquent vocabulary... or in more common terms... 'fancy' vocabulary." There was merely a pause before he corrected "Also, I am not a lady, I am a sir." litian WE CAN FAIL TOGETHER 8DDDDDD

Briar considered the other's words for a moment "It's still easy to just come out and say things instead of adding lots of words" he said. Easier too - at least it was to his way of thinking. He found himself wondering whether it was a girl thing - at least until the lady's next words had him looking over in her direction in startled shock.
"No way!" Probably not the most tactful thing to blurt out, especially followed as it was by the wide-eyed stare as if he was trying to work out what he'd missed - except nothing had changed.
Eventually however he managed "Um mister, you seriously look like a girl". There was no malice in his words, the words more a statement than anything else and it wasn't the outfit - well okay it wasn't just the outfit, because all the extra words, the hair and especially the hair fiddling from earlier all helped to add up to girl stuff.

It had been a few years since someone had this reaction to him, and though it was not his first time encountering a gender confusion, Howl couldn't help but blush a bit. Perhaps it had something to do with the less discreet volume the child had taken with him quite suddenly.
"I used to get told this much more in my youth..." he stated as evenly as one could after mild humiliation. "However, I had much shorter hair back then. Probably shorter than yours is currently kept." Using the back of his hand he gestured to the child's red hair.
His hand stopped and his fingers remained in front of him for a moment. "I take great care in my appearance, more so than the typical man I suppose."
He was not about to confess such, but this child's accusation was almost refreshing. Even if in his schooling days, Howl would come home crying from similar accusations, there was still a sort of nostalgia to it all.

The blushing really wasn't helping the whole 'not a girl' thing - because blushing was totally a girl thing and most definitely not a boy thing - it was a known fact that boys did not do blushing (even if said 'known' fact was only limited to Briar).
But Briar would just have to take his word for it, even if the mister seemed to do an awful lot of girl things for a mister - including the whole (self-admitted) appearance thing.
He fiddled with his wallet absently "So are you here to buy cookies too?"

Inhaling deeply, the lad aimed to gain his composure again with a good amount of success. His cheeks seemed to lose the rosy tints and he was able to look the child in the eyes again without feeling ashamed.
"I am here to purchase cakes to go with tea. This bakery has an excellent assortment of cakes, and my mother is quite particular about what cakes she has when she comes to visit for tea."
Since the boy was properly equipped with his wallet now, the elder of the pair walked to the door and pushed it open, holding it open so the child could enter. "Perhaps one day I will have to purchase a cookie to sample for myself."

"Oh" Briar couldn't really picture someone being particular about cake because cake was cake wasn't it? And although it wasn't as good as the gooey goodness that was chocolate chip cookies from straight of the oven, that didn't stop it from still being tasty.
Walking past the mister and into the bakery, he stopped once inside and turned.
"You should" he told him seriously as he looked up at the taller man because cookies were serious business. "The chocolate chip ones are the bestest, especially when they've just been baked - because just baked cookies are the best."Quote: I'm sorry to have taken so long Lizzy

Howl's mind cringed at the utterly disgusting use of the word "bestest" as if that was a legitimate real word. The English language was thoroughly abused, especially by the American-English users. His gut instinct was to correct the use of the term, however, the lad thought better of acting on such an instinct.
It was a parent's place to correct a child's grammar and butchering of the English language. Perhaps even a teacher's duty. A stranger doing such a thing would come across as presumptuous.
Closing the door behind him after the boy entered, the teal-haired fellow nodded to the clerk behind the counter. Howl had a reputation for calling in his orders, and such was true for this day as well.
With a nod of the head, he stated aloud "Would it be possible to add a baker's dozen of chocolate chip cookies to my order? The young sir here has recommended them to me, and I cannot ignore such a passionate recommendation of your fine products."
The clerk chuckled lightly as he easily nodded his head. "It will take a few minutes, will that be alright, Mr. Wickham?"
With a knowing smile, the lad replied "Yes, and would you make certain they are freshest you have available?"
He glanced to the child and apologetically mentioned "I hope you do not mind the wait."

The smell was the best place about bakeries Briar decided as he mentally tried to work out if the contents of his wallet would stretch to more than one cookie.
Well okay it came joint-first because eating fresh-baked cookies was equally as good.
He could hear the mister talking to the bakery guy, although he wasn't paying a lot of attention to the words - he did manage to catch the mister asking the bakery guy to add some cookies to his order but then got caught up into mentally calculating whether his coins would stretch to two cookies.
They would he decided at last, if just about, although it would use up all his coins. It would be worth it though because two cookies equalled twice as much goodness, snapping back to attention in time to hear the mister ask him something about minding the wait.
"I don't mind" he said. "Cookies are always worth the wait."
Cookies were never not worth the wait.
He switched his attention to the bakery guy "Can I get two of your cookies when you're done with Mister..." his voice trailed off for a moment as he realised he didn't know the other's name, before being followed up with "The mister's order."

The clerk couldn't help but chuckle at the label Howl had received from the child. "I think I can accommodate the request!"
Howl turned towards the child and extended a hand politely to the child.
"Mr. Wickham is acceptable, young sir. Might I ask what I may call you?"
As the exchange between the two customers continued, the clerk went to the back to tend to the orders.

A yes would have sufficed, but Briar wasn't complaining - even if bakery guy was using lots and lots of words too just like the mister.
Instead he grinned at the bakery guy as he said enthusiastically "Awesome!"
His lips were still upturned, although the grin had faded to a small smile as he turned to look at the mister who had revealed his name as being Mister Wickham, the thought of future cookies having put him into a good mood as reached out to shake the offered hand "Oh I'm Briar - Briar Mackenzie."
