”No?” said Biroki, listening for a moment. He heard rustling, sure, but it felt – and sounded – like the wind. He frowned, putting down his things for the moment. ”I didn't think you did, but...” he approached, putting his hand to Sauron's head. ”Let me check.” he gently felt along the shifter's scalp, inspecting with eyes, hands, and magic. ”No...” he said finally, ”Nothing cracked, or damaged... you caught yourself well enough.” he said, moving back and turning to his things. He was intending to take out some cloth balls, little targets he used sometimes – as evidenced by the burn marks and heat cracks along their surfaces. They would be good for training, definitely...
Only to find two small, ratlike creatures rooting around his bag. ”Wh-what the...” he exclaimed, taken aback. Maybe that rustle had been something after all. ”H-hey!”[/b[ he protested, as the two creatures began to drag a parcel – his lunch – out. He stumbled and tripped, but managed to, with a lucky grab, steal back his pack and detach the ferocious little needle-toothed beasties from it.
The cry of pain from the younger shifter brought a reflexive, panicked reaction from Biroki. His magic flared, scorching his bag (which was fortunately made and enchanted to be fire resistant for just that reason) and one of the poscuta on it as he turned around to see Sauron being attacked by one of the other beasties.
It was only a poscuta, not worthy of a major offensive, but Biroki – though he had matured substantially – was still a panicky, flighty, young man. With a yell – more like a yelp than anything – he sent a blast of fire at the poscuta. Thought – and realization of his stupidity – came only in the aftermath, but fortunately it seemed that his aim had become ingrained into his subconcious – Sauron was not seriously harmed. Biroki went over to Sauron, just to be sure that he was indeed all right. The young man was his responsibility now, after all. ”A-are you all right?” he asked, as, unseen, the remaining poscuta scampered away...
