It had been a week sense Navi had been released from the hospital and had met Chaonis in their place. A week since the flowers, and the candy, and the bear. A week since she had fallen asleep surrounded by symbols of his love brought back through the mirror. Since then they were supposed to have met up again, twice over, but her senshi had not shown up either time. It had been truly worrying the first evening, to the point that Lydia had called Raven when she'd gotten home to seek some mundane, reasonable explanation. That he had gotten tied up with something, and simply had no means of contacting her. She had let it go, reluctantly, but when he had failed to shown up a second night the dark mirror senshi refused to accept it had anything to do with something innocent. Something was wrong, Navi could feel it in her bones, and she took off across the rooftops, moving as quickly as possible, with the library as her destination. It had been years since she had last been anywhere near it. At first, because she had not been strong enough to take Camelot on with any hope of victory, then, later, because she lost the desire to face him. Now she needed him, because he would know if anything was wrong with her Fiyero. She was panting heavily by the time she landed on the rooftop, and a hand came up to clutch at a stitch in her side as she tried to catch her breath enough to concentrate on her surroundings, feeling for the familiar ping of a knight's aura. "Where are you?"

Camelot sought the library for his own reasons, sometimes, and not just because it was where he promised to be, if anyone needed him. He tried to keep a regular schedule there, but more than that, he went there for his own solitude. Ever since his son had ended up in the hospital, and what he had done in response to it, Camelot needed to find peace and was unable to get there. Even visiting his Wonder had only resulted in more questions and confusion.
His mind was not at rest tonight, as he looked out over the city and felt auras all around him. They were distant, but there was always a lot of activity at night, and his ability to sense them had grown from his status as a Royal Knight. He tried to focus on them, see if there was anything he needed to go check in on, but they all felt too distant, and he could not make anything out specifically until he felt a familiar aura heading in his direction, growing stronger as it got nearer.
Powering down, he waited, knowing that whoever was looking for him would know where to find him.
Turning when he heard the voice, he kept out of sight to power up again, having confirmed that it was someone looking for him, and not just wandering by on accident. He was not sure why he felt the need to power down, but he recognized Navi's voice, and wanted to talk to her rather than avoid a fight. There wasn't going to be a fight this time, he knew that now, because she meant too much to his son.
And by extension, that meant she had to mean a lot to him, too. And he couldn't help himself. If she made Nathan happy, then Camelot wanted her to be a part of his family as well.
"I'm right here. I thought you might be someone looking for a fight. Are you alright?" He sounded more worried than he probably should have, but he was on edge ever since his fight with Painite, and finding Chaonis so near to making a terrible mistake. He hoped that Navi had not been dragged into it as well, somehow, though he knew it was impossible. Painite was dead, he made sure of that.

The royal knight's aura flared to life suddenly, almost directly on top of her, and despite how much progress they had made she still flinched, backing away from the source automatically before the moon lit up that kind face. For just a moment she stood there, awkwardly, arms folded against the late autumn chill, and looked up at him. Then he spoke, asking if she was alright, and the moment past. A hand came up to her neck, touching the bandage there, and she nodded, lips pressed in a thin line. "I'm alright." Pale features cracked, desperately worried, and she was moving forward. "I can't find him," she tried to keep her voice level, but it was hard. After everything that had happened in the last few weeks, Navi was no feeling very steady, and it showed in the soft shake of her in her words. "We were supposed to meet, twice, and he hasn't made it. I can't find him." She grabbed his hand, holding tightly to the cold metal of his gauntlet. "Did something happen?" Her mind was racing with awful scenarios.

"Chaonis?"
Camelot did not need to ask, but he frowned at her anyway, asking her on impulse and out of obligation to, as if some sort of cosmic force dictated conversation that he could not deny despite knowing the answer. of course she was looking for his son: it was the one thing they had in common, and though they cared about him in different ways, coming from different factions, she deserved to know what was going on with him.
The Royal Knight's expression softened and he shook his head, running a hand through his hair as he debated how to tell her what had happened. No doubt she would not be happy with what he said, either way.
"He's in the hospital," he said, at last, shaking his head as if in apology already. He had no control over Chaonis' actions, of course, but he still felt responsible.
"He went after Painite. I found them fighting, and Chaonis very nearly killed her. I stopped him, but he had already been injured by her. I had to take him to the hospital, and he's still there, recovering. He's alright, it wasn't vital, but he'll be healing for a while, I think. I'm surprised he hasn't snuck out to try and see you, but he's been pretty well drugged up."
He offered her a thin smile, but knew it was not enough to calm her.

Of course she meant Chaonis. Who else would she ask him about? Navi frowned up at him, brows creased, already on edge. She didn't need the answer to know something was wrong, she could feel it, like a hand closed tight around her chest. Intuition, or a sixth sense. Whatever it was, she just knew. But knowing didn't soften the blow of reality. Hazel eyes widened as he confirmed her fears, and her grip on his hand tightened as the blood in her veins ran to ice. "He's..." She couldn't say it, the words stuck in her throat, echoing in her ears, drowning out everything else. Even his voice, as he told her what had happened, seemed as if it was getting further away. She blinked, swaying on her feet, before her vision began to grey around the edges and she was pitching forward as darkness ate the light.

"Navi?"
He glanced at her and was surprised to see her tipping on way and then the other, letting out a yelp and moving to catch her before she hit the ground. He managed to do so, though he doubted his armor was any more comfortable than hitting the ground, though at least she did not fall as far as she could have if he just let her go... right?
Shifting awkwardly, he carefully picked her up and looked around, wondering where he could set her down to help her recover her senses. He chose the center of the roof, sitting her under the overhang by the door that led into the stairwell. He took off his coat and wrapped it around her so she wasn't sitting on the floor, touching his hand to her face gently as worry crossed his features.
Oddly enough, the concerned look was very similar to Nathan's, though their eyes were different colors and Camelot's were much more worn with time and experience.
"Navi? Take things slowly. Are you alright? I'm sorry, I should have explained in a more... gentle way. I..." He shook his head, feeling guilty. He hated that he seemed so good at hurting people, even the ones he was trying to protect.
"Chaonis is okay. He's going to be okay. You both are. I can promise you that."

Vision came back to her as he was carrying her, and she blinked up at him as he set her down and draped something warm across her shoulders. And now, looking up into the familiar lines of his face, she could see it, that tell-tale family resemblance. It was so strong, Navi wasn't sure how she had ever missed it, but that was the magic that protected them from each other and allowed them to live normal lives. Drawing in a deep breath, she pressed the heel of her palm against her brow, slender fingers forcing ginger curls away from her face. She felt woozy, unsteady, and it wasn't just the shock of the news, but the lingering effects of the pain killers. "I'm alright." At least physically. Hazel eyes rolled up to him, listened as he apologized, and she fell quiet. Of course Chaonis would go after Painite. It had been foolish to think other wise, no matter how much she had hoped he wouldn't. It was, after all, exactly what she would have done in their roles had been reversed. But there would have been no one to step in to keep her from killing the general. "You're sure he's alright?" She didn't think he would lie to her, but...better to be sure. "What did she do to him?"

Camelot was not so sure she was okay, but he nodded at her assurance and watched her for a moment. She looked a little shaky and pale still, and that was worrying to him to say the least. He felt guilty for causing her to have a turn, but he knew she would rather he told her what was happening than she finding out some other way. Or not finding out at all, which was unfair to her as someone important in Nathan's life.
Camelot understood how strong love could be, and though he was full of all kinds of advice and words of warning and impulses to protect, he knew that the bond Chaonis and Navi held was one that he could not break, even if he wanted to. Instead, he wanted to see it nurtured and encouraged.
They deserved a chance, no matter how tough it might be.
He frowned, rubbing the back of his neck before he answered, trying to find the most delicate way to put things.
"They got into a large fight, but I didn't see all of it. When I arrived, Painite had already cut him across the face, and stabbed him in the shoulder, making a serious looking injury that he's going to be recovering from for a while. But he had her by the neck when I got there, and must have used his magic, because the building they were in was coming down. He was going to kill her but... I stopped him. I didn't want him to make a mistake like that."
He took a breath, opting to get everything out in one go.
"I did stop him from killing her, but she won't be bothering you, or him, again. I understood the danger it left him in, attacking her like that, and the way she thrives on revenge. I took him to the hospital and returned for her, and when I found her... well. I gave her a chance, but she told me her intentions. I... made sure she could not follow through with her threats. She's gone."

Head in her hands, Navi listened as Camelot recounted what had happened, and she sucked in a breath at the mention of a cut across the face, visibly wincing. She wanted to know where, and how bad the cut was, but so long as he was alright, it didn't really matter. A scar wouldn't take away from how very handsome he was, he would still be her Chaonis, her Fiyero. It was the shoulder wound that was more worrying. A serious joint, with so many nerves and ligaments. A dire injury, something that could literally cripple him if Painite had gotten lucky with her spear. The color drained from the Dark Mirror's face, and she had to close her eyes, draw in a deep breath and hold it before letting it out slowly. And there was a twinge, an instant of anger, when the knight admitted he had stepped in to prevent Chaonis from killing the b***h. The senshi's head came up, eyes wide and frustrated. Ready to yell at him, to ask him why, before the rest of the explanation cut her off and she sank back once again, exhausted. Fingers on her temples, she looked up at her boyfriend's father, exasperated. "You can't cave everyone, Camelot." Irony, considering their current position, but Navi was something of a special case. "Some people are just bad, and there is nothing good left in them, and there is nothing worth saving." She sounded so jaded. "She's dead, though?"

A sadness settled over Camelot as she spoke, but he could not respond right away. He shook his head slowly from side to side, but added no words for a long moment, and could not lift his eyes to meet hers directly.
He could not believe that anyone was beyond redemption or purification if they wanted it. Everyone deserved the chance at it, anyway, and they certainly deserved to live their lives. He had not just killed a dangerous Negaverse General, after all. He had killed a civilian. Someone's friend or sibling, someone's daughter or mother or wife. He had ruined a family he did not know, potentially. He bore that responsibility very heavily.
Killing was not something he did without thought, and he certainly did not revel in it.
"She's dead," he managed, at length, and he finally looked her in the eye again. "I couldn't let my son make that kind of a decision, but when it comes to protecting my family, extended or otherwise," he paused pointedly and managed a small smile, which faded quickly, "I will do what I must. But please don't believe that it is the only answer. Come to me, any time you're faced with something bigger than you are, or if you're in any danger. My son thinks the world of you, you know. I want you to be with him for as long as you two have together, and I'll do what I can to make sure you have that chance."

A long blink followed that comment of extended family, that small smile, and the corners of her lips twitched, hazel eyes dropping briefly before twitching back up once again. How quickly they had turned from enemies to something closer even than allies. It still struck her at times, like a little shock, but his sincerity was undeniable. But he was still a bleeding heart, and what had once been infuriating was now frightening. "Don't mourn her, Camelot. She would not mourn you, or me, or your son." There was conviction in her ton, a certain thread of fear, or desperation, or something wary. It was hard to tell, her voice was rasped and heavy, the strain of the evening clear. "She would see us dead, if she could. One after the other, and you she would save for last." Her lip curled, but the flash of anger was short lived. Navi was tired. Delicate hands rose up to rub the heels of her palms into her eyes, and she sighed as she tipped her head back to rest against the door at her back. "You promise me he's alright?" She wanted to go to him, to make sure of it herself, but that was impossible. Her next breath shook as she drew it in, and pale eyes closed. "I hate it," she admitted, a whisper he might not even catch. "I hate being forced apart." The fighting, the pain, the death.

"I know, I know," he said on a sigh, shaking his head. He was fully aware that Painite had been a terrible person, who enjoyed hurting others and did so without reason. At least no reason beyond for the fun of it. He looked at Navi and nodded slowly.
"I am just not... ah... well, what's done is done. And it was necessary, though I don't exactly feel good about it. I do know that the cost was too high to risk leaving her to her revenge. She's gone now, either way."
He ran a hand through his hair and did his best to force himself to calm down and put thoughts of what happened, of his decision and the consequences or benefits of it, out of his mind for now. He had lots of time to dwell on it, and he was sure the more he thought about it, the worse he would feel.
"I promise," he said, with a smile. "He's going to heal. And he's going to come back to you. Look... I know it seems hard, and it might seem strange for me to say this, but the struggle is something that will make you stronger. If you and him can manage through all of this, then what you have is important and worth protecting. Saving. I'm his dad, and I worry about him. I want what's best for him. Something is telling me that that's you. So believe in what you have, alright? Keep him in your heart, and you'll both be stronger for it. I know how much you've changed him, I see it in how he's acting now. He cares about you a great deal, and I know you do, too."
Camelot was a hopeless romantic sometimes. His instincts were to protect his family, his son, but he also knew how important it was for them to experience things like this. It was a much harder experience of love than most had to endure, but it was the lot they had been given. He wished it was easier, more normal, but that was not something he could change.
"Things will get better. I don't know how, and I can't promise it will be soon, and it certainly won't be easy. But I know that things can be better than this. We'll get there."

Beyond the obvious reasons why, Navi was relieved she had never managed to succeed in any of her malicious plans to rid he world of knights, or a certain knight in particular. She had, up to this point, managed to avoid killing, and now she was glad for it. The weight of one justified death seemed to weigh so heavily on Camelot's shoulders, and though she knew him to be something of a bleeding heart(still), that did not mean the weight was not a true burden. Lips pressing together, she reached up, small hand cupping his cheek briefly. It drifted away as he began to speak again, and her chest rose and fell in a long sigh as Chaonis was brought up once again. Of course she trusted his father to know if he would be alright, but that did little to ease the worry she felt for him. Not that she didn't appreciate what he was saying. Not just about his health, but about them. They had been alone in their struggle for a long time, it was still odd to her that someone else knew. Not just someone else, but Chaonis' own father. Who also happened to be, of all people, Camelot. "There are things in life that are worth waiting for. And Chaonis is one of those things." She was feeling better now, less woozy. "There is nothing I wouldn't do to be with him." Carefully, she pushed against the door she was leaning against, getting feet under her again. "Nothing." She'd already told the senshi what she had in mind, but she didn't know if he'd mentioned it to his father yet. "I want to talk to a princess."

Camelot smiled and nodded his head.
One thing he had worries about, in the back of his mind, was the idea of the two of them trying to be on the same team. It either meant Navi purifying, which Camelot was not sure could happen, or Chaonis being corrupted, which Camelot was damn certain could not happen. He was protective, yes, but he had learned to trust them, without even realizing it. They had been alright so far, after all, without his interfering. He could offer them strength and support, but he would leave their journey for them to find.
But he would continue to worry. A lot.
"A princess? Yes, of course. I can help you find one," if Camelot knew already or not, he very shrewdly kept it to himself. He stood and kept an eye on her, just in case she wobbled again. "When you're both feeling better, and can go together, perhaps."
