Damian

There was only one reason that Damian and Tenzin ever separated from each other. Damian needed to go hunting. It was not an occurrence that happened regularly, but when Damian couldn't restrain his natural carnivorous spirit, he had to separate from his herbivore companion. Nuts and berries were tolerable, but the taste of a squirrel, or a sparrow, or a mouse... That's something that wasn't easy to forget.

While other wolves may've been taught by their parents during some part of their lives, Damian had never gotten the opportunity. His hunting methods were purely instinctual and rather clumsy, but he always managed to catch something, in one form or another.

On this particular occasion, Damian had managed to find himself following a rather curious scent. It did not seem like a prey scent, but it did seem rather familiar, in some aspect. As he drew closer to the strange scent, he was able to identify what it was. He was catching the scent of another wolf! He stopped, wondering if this other wolf was friendly or whether it would be hostile. The only encounters he'd had with hostile wolves were his own parents, he reminded himself. If he could survive them, he could certainly survive a newcomer.

After proceeding forward, he followed his nose to the location of the wolf. A handsome creature, to be sure, with a light, colorful pelt. It was a coat he would expect to see on a Soquili like Tenzin, however, and not another wolf. Still, he suspected that he had his own markings that made him stand out from the rest of his pack, what with the glowing, red symbols along his back and tail. Now that the other wolf was within his sights, however, he became uncertain again. How was he supposed to greet this wolf? He didn't know a thing about them, and after traveling with Tenzin, well... He didn't often see other wolves around, familiar or otherwise.

Opening up his mouth to greet her in some fashion, he was cut off by the loud growl of his stomach, which caused his ears to flatten in embarrassment. Oh, the other wolf must've heard such an audible complaint, how foolish he must seem. Time to finish what his stomach started.

"Hello, hello. I was just walking by, and it's, er... It's been some time since I've eaten. Do you happen to be acquainted with this area? Maybe you could point me in the direction of a good plentiful prey area?"

Scout padded softly through underbrush, looking for prey. She made mental notes about the locations of particularly scarce healing plants as she went, intending to come back to gather them later. She was a long way from home, but the habit of gathering and storing plants in her pouch was not easy to break. Plus, she never knew when they'd come in handy. Better to be prepared than to be caught unawares. And, if she took the time to dry some of the plants, they might even make it all the way back home with her. If she could manage to make that happen, Scout knew her mother would be pleased.

A light breeze carried the scent of a nearby wolf to her nose. Curious, she crept closer and stood in a clearing. She could hear the other wolf approaching. Although not clumsy, it also seemed that this stranger was not light on his or her feet. By the scent, she was guessing the wolf was male, but caution had always served her well and she would refrain from making any assumptions. As he entered her line of sight, she was surprised to see a lovely grey wolf with a striking red mark on his right shoulder and tail, and warm brown eyes.

The growl of his stomach greeted her before he did. She was surprised that he would neglect his hunger in such a way with prey all around them. However, his manners were not lacking, and he greeted her promptly. His voice sounded melodic to her, and her ears pricked forward in interest as he spoke. She smiled slightly at his request, then silently slunk back into the brush. Scout was gone for only moments before she returned, carrying a fresh squirrel. She padded up to him and laid the mammal at his feet. Her amber eyes met his. The tiny smile appeared again as she nudged the squirrel toward him with her nose and then backed away, laying down nearby. Hunting must not be his strong suit if he was asking for a place with plentiful prey in such an alive forest.

Damian

Damian was almost certain that he had said or done something wrong, for after he addressed the she-wolf, she disappeared without a signal word to him. He was uncertain on how to proceed from that moment and was only just beginning to turn away when he heard returning pawsteps.

He gulped at the sight of the squirrel in the she-wolf's mouth and the marks on his shoulder and tail glowed, as they did whenever he was feeling something particularly strongly--in this case, hunger. He had to remember his manners though, something that had been ingrained into him from some very dominant parents.

"Th-Thank you. I'm sorry to bring you that trouble, but thank you." After giving her a brief return-smile, he lowered his head and tore into the squirrel. The taste of blood was foreign on his tongue, but that didn't make it any less delightful. He would always forget how wonderful prey-animals tasted in comparison to berries and nuts. He left nothing but fur and small bones of the remains, swallowing it all down in hasty mouthfuls. Then, with a satisfied sigh, Damian sat down and relaxed his posture, letting his eyes move back onto the other wolf.

"It was very kind of you to hunt for me, and I was surprised that you were able to do so, so quickly. I didn't realize there was so much prey around here." Now that he opened his ears to the forest that surrounded them, his stomach no longer the only thing he could hear, he was able to hear birdsong and the sounds of other animals skittering about the terrain. His ears went back for a moment and he gave an embarrassed smile, "You must think me rather foolish, if I can't hunt for myself. I'll admit, my hunting skills are not what they used to be, since I've gotten used to traveling with an herbivore." He admitted to the she-wolf, before remembering himself.

"Oh, my name's Damian, by the way. Who're you?" He asked her, his ears perking up again.

Scout's interest piqued again as the red markings on his shoulder and tail glowed. That was unusual. She wondered briefly what it might mean, but got no sense of danger. She continued to lay where she'd settled and watched with interest as the male devoured the squirrel. The tiny smile on her face grew a little larger when she saw the speed at which he devoured the prey. It occurred to her that if she'd turned her attention away for very long that she would have missed the consumption entirely.

Scout was pleased that he found her offering acceptable. As a beta member of her pack, she was used to providing for higher-ranked wolves when they asked, and really she didn't mind providing for anyone because she rather enjoyed helping others. She rarely gave it much thought, but when it did cross Scout's mind to wonder about the source of that feeling, she supposed that her helpful and giving nature came from her mother, the pack healer.

She flushed slightly at his praise. She wasn't accustomed to having anyone notice when she assisted them in any way. Well, except for her mother. Her mother was always gracious. Scout worked hard as a pup to emulate her mother, and had noticed some uncommon traits. She'd decided they were traits worth having and tried to make them a part of her natural behavior as much as she could without having to talk. The fact that this male was also gracious endeared him to her.

At the mention of traveling with an herbivore, her head tilted to one side and her gaze became more focused. She'd heard from members of her pack that some chose a life bonded to large equine creatures, but it was so frowned upon in her pack that any who chose that life were not allowed to return. Although she would never abandon or embarrass her family by bonding to such a creature, Scout didn't understand what was so bad about it and was extremely curious about those who did lead such a life. Was this male one of those sort of wolves?! She rose daintily to her paws and approached him, sniffing. Ah, there it was -- the very faint scent of horse. Her tail wagged in excitement. Scout's mind was so busy processing this new information that she almost missed his introduction. Damian. She repeated his name several times in her head to imprint it on her memory. She sat on the ground in front of him and smiled at his question. He wanted to know her name!

"Scout," she said softly.

Damian

Damian was still waiting for an answer when the she-wolf got to her paws and approached him. She sniffed about his pelt and he felt himself go stiff with embarrassment, and the general lack of knowledge on what a wolf should do in such a situation.

It only took him a few moments longer than it should've to think that she'd smelled Tenzin on him. His mind had gone rather blank and fuzzy, thanks to having a she-wolf so close to him and he was unable to form any sort of reply even after she'd backed away.

Between the time she had backed away and when she introduced herself, Damian was still trying to get his head back into the game, shaking himself a little to distract him from the fact that her scent was now all over him. By the time she'd given her name, he was back on track and smiling at her once again.

"Scout?" He echoed, trying out how it sounded on his tongue. It was sharp and to the point, sounding more like a rank title that he would've had in his family pack, as opposed to an actual name. Still, it suited her and he couldn't see her as anything other than a Scout. He went onto telling her, "That's a lovely name."

It had been quite some time since Damian had come into this closeness to another wolf and he was quite certain that Tenzin wouldn't worry too much if he spent a while longer talking with Scout, so long as he returned before sundown. On the off-chance that it became too dark to navigate back safely (there were dangers in the woods, even for a wolf, after all), he was certain he could find a hideaway area where he could be safe for the night. Heck, maybe Scout would even know a place like that, if she was still with him by that time.

"I noticed your interest of my fur, perhaps you caught the scent of my bonded, eh?" He waited for a sign of confirmation before relaxing, "If you've got the time, I can tell you about him, if you'd like. I've got all sorts of stories, since I started traveling with him... Although if you've somewhere better to be, I won't want to keep you from it." He offered her, tilting his head slightly to one side as he awaited her answer, trying not to look to eager at the prospect of interacting with another wolf, especially one as friendly as Scout seemed to be.

He liked her name! She knew it was silly to be happy about something so inconsequential, but somehow she couldn't help it. Scout smiled softly at his offer. She always found new information helpful, and she was so curious about this sort of lifestyle that she'd love nothing more than to hear more about it. Plus...this he-wolf *was* pretty cute, even if she would rather die of embarrassment than admit it out loud. She slid gracefully down from sitting to laying, stretching a little on the way down, preparing herself to lay still and pay close attention to every word he said. She looked up at Damian's face and nodded slightly at him, just to be sure that he knew she would like to hear about his companion. She was half-tempted to daydream about what it would be like to have such a companion, but she knew she would miss pieces of his story if she did. No, that wouldn't be polite *or* effective, she decided. Her ears perked up in anticipation as she gazed at him, eyes bright and wide.
